About

Since the conception of Choolips we have accumulated many precious things; amongst these likeminded friends & leftovers. Our leftovers are the fabrics from our printing process and garment production, some might call it waste. We have collected these leftovers and built exciting relationships with new collaborators. We gave each of our collaborators a length of our leftovers and asked them to evolve these into beautiful new Choolips products starting our ‘EVOLVE’ collection.

EVOLVE has two advantages; with every collaboration we double our social and environmental impact across continents AND we expand our product line and amazing brand stories. The bigger we grow, the more powerful our impact forging positive change for planet and people.

Choolips is a London based womenswear brand introducing luxuries of ancient textiles traditions back into fashion. Our designs & supply chains merge African, Indian & Western cultures telling stories of beautiful craftsmanship. Choolips trades fairly with small water & carbon footprints harmonising the mindsets of producers and consumers.

collaboration | Leftovers from our Ghanaian textile and garment production are evolved into lovers bracelets by Esotic Jewellery in London. Inspired by Indian Rhaki bracelets, traditionally exchanged on Raksha Bandhan, a Hindu festival celebrating the bond and love between brothers and sisters, every bracelet is individually crafted using delicate rose gold-filled chain and silk threads in combination with our prints.

Esotic Jewellery | ESOTIC Jewellery pieces adorn you using tribal elements from all around the world. ESOTIC's designs are inspired by past eras and the sea, incorporating recycled and natural materials to create the essence of a seasoned elegant globetrotter. Each piece is handmade in London and many of these beauties have been featured in Vogue UK, ELLE UK, Red magazine and in Style.it. Originally from Milan, Italy, Ombretta Vaccari moved to London to work in a jewellery boutique in Burlington Arcade. Whilst there, she trained as a jeweller specialising in restringing pearls from around the world using antique Japanese and Chinese techniques. She attended two silversmiths and other wood carving courses in a bid to further expand her skills. Working solely with pearls, she spent three years designing, making and selling jewellery for the boutique before embarking on her own collection, ESOTIC jewellery.

Ombretta has created two gorgeous styles of Choolips bracelets.

collaboration | Leftovers from our garment production are evolved into beautiful bags & backpacks by Sandstorm in Kenya. Beautifully crafted finishes and contrasts are added using hand selected leather hides and brass fittings.

Sandstorm Kenya | Dubbed the 'Louis Vuitton' of Africa', the craftsmanship that goes into making Sandstorm bags is down to the careful preparation, sewing, hand-finishing and quality control employed by locals in the heart of Kenya. Every single bag and accessory is carefully and individually crafted from fine raw materials, including Tanzanian 18oz all-cotton canvas, hand-selected leather hides, and solid brass fittings.

Sandstorm have created a Choolips BackPack and Handbag. The BackPack is 40cm high x 15cm deep x 30cm wide. The Bag is 18cm high x 18cm deep x 30cm long.

collaboration | Choolips leftovers from our Ghanaian textile and garment production are evolved into chair upholstery. The story of Choolips’ prints and the inspirations behind these are interpreted by Yinka and Choolips into chair designs. Each and every chair will be entirely unique. Each one will be found from leftover stock and re-worked just for you, telling its own individual story.

Yinka Ilori | An East London based product & furniture designer with the future in mind, Yinka specialises in up-cycling vintage furniture inspired by traditional Nigerian parables and African fabrics that he grew up with as a child. Deeply aware and passionately against the unnecessary waste of modern consumer societies in the western world, his design approach starts with the dismantling of the original components, which he then re- assembles into a new piece ready for use again. He aims to challenge perceptions of waste through the regeneration and revitalisation of every-day furniture, where every piece deserves the chance to be loved again. Each piece of furniture he up-cycles tells a meaningful, yet humorous story which can be shared with people throughout the world.

Here are EXAMPLES of what your chairs will look like. These have been created by Yinka Ilori for previous collections.

collaboration | Hand on heart, who doesn’t think these are adorable? Evolving leftovers from our Ghanaian textiles production we are creating the first buds for our Unbearably Cute collection for boys and girls.

Ghanaian Seamstresses | We just have to! We get so many requests to make cute children’s wear. The Ghanaian seamstresses are a group of ladies who make our high quality womenswear with skills larger than life. They have worked with Choolips for the past 4years evolving all of our samples and much of our production. These very ladies will be making our Unbearably Cute collection.

collaboration | We love a party! Evolving leftovers from our Ghanaian textiles production we are making bunting as a celebration of love and life.

Ghanaian Seamstresses | The same as our Unbearable Cute collection the bunting will be made by our trusted team of seamstresses in Ghana. We have lived through many professional ups and downs and thought it's time to have a party for you with bunting and all. POW POW POW!

My dream is that you will EVOLVE with us and that you will love our new products & collaborations. With you we will grow our positive social and environmental impact on planet and people. Every pledge will support us to fund the production of our first Evolve products. Further it will support us to bring to life more impactful collaborations celebrating craftsmanship across continents building sustainable impact in fashion and business.

'I am Annegret Affolderbach, Founder & Designer of Choolips. By passion and by trade I am a textile and clothing designer; by default I am a bold visionary, who dares to get stuff done. My passion for beautiful textiles, people and entrepreneurial small businesses in developing economies, brought to mind the idea to create Choolips. The idea was to revamp traditional textiles techniques with the aim to revive these and to sustain the artisans and entrepreneurs behind them. These were to be produced applying fair trade principles & transparency, in the home country of those techniques in collaboration with a local skilled workforce.'

‘one of the most pleasing fashion experiences I have ever had’ Lucy Siegle, The Observer Columnist for Ethical Living & Author of 'To Die For: Is Fashion Wearing Out The World?'

‘ I love the idea of Choolips’. Tamsin Blanchard, Style Director, The Telegraph

‘Having seen Annegret in action over the last two years, she is a beacon of light within the fashion industry, at the forefront of looking at ways that she can build the capacity of small business co-operatives in Africa.’ Claire Hamer, Sustainability Strategist, Asos.com

Choolips’ 1st capsule collection of 3 dresses and 2 Batik prints reached for the stars. The collection was awarded ‘Global Commercial Dress & Print Design’ by the Ethical Fashion Forum and bought for 3 seasons by Topshop to fly off shelves. Awarded ‘UK Young Fashion Entrepreneur of the Year 2009’ Finalist, British Council and ‘Barclays Innovative Business of the Year 2008’ Winner, Choolips is stocked around the globe and on its way to become a strong independent brand.

Risks and challenges

Our goal: To polish off our leftovers and expand our social and environmental impact in inspiring new collaborations ensuring our product line is of the highest quality.

Our primary concern:
We run out of leftovers. That will be a greatest problem to have as it means we have achieved our dream!

What can we do about it:
If we run out of leftovers we will EVOLVE our products into our mainline applying prints from our current ranges. That means printing new materials and creating new leftovers and it all begins again.

Challenges: If we run out of leftovers, there could be a delay in the production and shipment.

How will you know: We will provide our backers with updates throughout the process.

How great is this risk: Reasonable. We have carefully chosen our collaborators and we know either way they will accommodate our production. Together we will evolve according to the circumstances and there will be enough Choolips EVOLVE for everyone!
