Almost There?!

We're currently over $5000 already. I just launched this thing a couple of days ago!

You guys are incredible! I am going to be buried in dice when this is all done.

I am looking into color options for dice and working on details for dice bags. Once I can pin down some hard numbers, I will see about adding them as an addon. For now it's premature to post it.

One thing: I have been informed that someone *may* own the rights to the symbol I am using. I don't believe it to be true, and nobody has contacted me about it yet, so we will see. That being said, what options would you guys find acceptable in the event that I have to change the icon?

We could use the HP Lovecraft version of the elder sign, which is a twig with 5 branches. We could use probably use the "Yellow Sign" symbol, or I could have a friend whip up a Cthulhu head icon or something similar?

What types of icon/symbol would you guys like, just in case I end up having to change it?

Thanks again to the amazing crowd backing this project!

@Peter Sciretta: I plan to stay the course, unless I am forced to change the design. Unless I have to, I am keeping it as it is. I might make the '6' face slightly different so it stands out for certain effects, but it'll still be the same symbol.

I would vote for staying with the elder sign logo if at all possible. It looks like it's been used in quote a few works without any issues

      Definitely the Lovecraft version

Based on the Wikipedia article ( ) which obviously isn't the most reliable resource, you should be in the clear.

The Elder Sign you're using was described in the 1945 book, The Lurker at the Threshold. Worst case is that you can make your own drawing of the icon based on the description directly from the book.

However, considering that it has been used in tons of Cthulhu related works by several publishers across several mediums, I have a really hard time believing that exact image is copyrighted.

I think communication is the key to clearing things up.

Lots of good suggestions so far - But at the moment I like the Elder Sign star most of all. After that the Yellow Sign, the HP Lovecraft branch, and the Cthulhu head are okay ideas for something like stretch goals or maybe add-ons to some, (assuming that you didn't have to buy 5000 dice blanks of minimum quantity should you not move that many and could CNC them instead), I think would be a nice touch - but not the main stay of the project. Thank-you for asking for your backers input Tom!

I know Chaosium will get involved if you try to use "The Call of Cthulhu" anywhere.

What Jerry and Nathan said. And what Tom and Michael said. I don't know if Chaosium has licensing for that particular Elder Sign graphic, but you might want to talk to them... or one of the companies that produces licensed CoC adventures. That graphic gets around, after all.

As Michael Moore posted, it's been used in a couple of other successful projects. I have NOT been contacted about this, so there is no need for concern at this point. It may turn out that nothing happens. I'm just trying to cover all the bases and make sure I have a backup for the worst-case scenario.

@Charles Dexter Ward: Don't be too hasty! These aren't the only options either, so we might get some different ideas from the crowd.

Again, this is merely "just in case". There is no indication - whatsoever - that a change will need to be made. As far as I know, we are still clear.

I think thematically, the elder sign of either variety is best.

The yellow sign is a negative connotation as is a Cthulhu head. Honestly, if you were to switch to either of those, I'd have to reconsider my support.

The original would be fine with me, as would be a Cthulhu head.

    12. Cathulhu on January 12, 2014

If needed, I vote for the original Lovecraft symbology. It helps keep things true to their roots.

      Albino Dragon also used it.
