"Oh, Sully" depicts an adventurous whale struggling with accepting his identity and finds it while attempting to be someone he's not.
“Oh, Sully!”, is a majestic and mighty whale, who does not recognize his magnificence until he journeys along several species of birds; those with whom he desires to imitate. This whale tale reflects on one of life’s basic but sometimes difficult lesson; to be content and accepting of who you are. Seems pretty simple for some, but others can relate to the struggle and challenges they endured just to achieve this little lesson, particularly during childhood.
“Oh, Sully!” addresses the fact that the grass is NOT always greener on the other side. The caricatures of birds depicted in the story as belonging to the “in crowd” include a pigeon, a hummingbird, an ostrich, and pelicans. Sully, comes to accept himself while searching and seeking out a new identity. He realizes that each time he “flys” with a different crowd, he just doesn’t seem to fit in; he doesn’t belong there.
Having three young children of my own, this lesson speaks volumes, and is one I want to convey to them. While developing, “Oh, Sully!”, my six year old drew upon her own conclusion: that Sully should remain Sully; a whale. I want my book, “Oh, Sully!’ to do the same for any child who may read it. I want them to know how majestic and mighty they are; just as Sully the whale discovered he was.
Thar She Blows:
I am hoping to raise funds to assist with the following: publishing “Oh, Sully!”, building a website, and setting up an e-commerce site for sales. The funds will also allow me to launch my book within local art gallery’s, gearing the art show towards children to inspire them to be creative and to see the development and process of writing a book and cultivating characters. I will also be able to tour local schools as a guest reader, to encourage children to read and meet Sully through the imagery of words and pictures conveyed, and to address the importance of accepting both yourself and others; to embrace differences.
Additionally, as an environmentalist, and avid beach-goer, I want to keep our oceans clean. The biodiversity of plants and animal species require us to be diligent stewards and not destroy our planet, so that future generations can enjoy and learn from what remains. I intend to donate, from a portion of proceeds, to the Surfrider Foundation; a foundation “dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves, and beaches.”
