About

Before getting into the project itself below I'd like to stress that this series acts as the introduction to a much larger fictional universe. In order to better get a feel for exactly what I mean I would stress anyone who might have interest in backing this project to look at my website www.philipmroberts.com and read through some of the material there first, especially the excerpts.

I’ve been telling stories in some form or another my entire life. My story telling days began with me on the floor in my room playing with figures. I’d make sure to come up with a name for every story and create new characters of my own. I wouldn’t begin putting any of these tales to paper until I was in junior high and I started writing what amounted to fan fiction based on the original Warcraft series.

When I began to seriously write I jumped into novels first and one of the earliest works I wrote was the first version of this book, The Fortis Hastatus. Eventually I decided to shift my focus to short story work instead. As an early writer I made many mistakes, and having to edit or change a short story was a lot less time consuming than rewriting a novel. Because of this approach I was given the chance to write far more stories than I ever had before, and honed my craft in scene development, character development, pacing, and finding the best writing style to fit the tale being told.

I’ve now returned to novels and have several series I’m currently putting together. This is the first of those completed series.

In the earliest version of the series, this book was originally inspired almost entirely by a combination of super hero comics and manga. My grandfather introduced me to the world of super hero comics when I was in early elementary and I was hooked immediately.

As the years have progressed and the series evolved, I began drawing inspiration from a much wider variety of sources to create my world. Many of the characters still retain their origins in my love of comics. Many of the abilities they use come from the various manga series that I’ve read. The concept of dimensions was originally inspired by the show Sliders that I used to love when I was younger (until they killed off Arturo, but I digress). Many of the themes and moral issues of Star Trek have found their way into the workings of the Aeolus government that runs at the center of this series. The longer, sprawling epics of fantasies helped shape the plot and the core of the first major story arc contained in the first six books. My enjoyment of political thrillers added a touch of the internal struggles within the structure of the government, and so on.

In one form or another I’ve been writing this series for ten years, and as such, everything story I’ve seen or read has impacted it in some way.

The series itself has no true ending to it. My intention had always been to create a fictional world that could sustain itself indefinitely. Eventually, I hope this series can lead to others taking enough interest to keep the tale going long past the point I’m not able to.

However, I enjoy more tightly constructed tales about a larger struggle. The charm of a series like The Lord of the Rings is that a single, rather straightforward story (a journey to destroy a single item) can open up the reader to many other tales that have already taken place or are about to begin. Once the quest itself is over, the world remains, and that’s what I’ve done with the first major arc of the Fortis Hastatus. The first six books tell a tightly woven tale about Nes being introduced to her new world and coming to terms with who she is while the villain Ignis enacts his hidden agenda. When the first six books are finished, this story will be complete, and if needed, the series could end there. I just hope it doesn’t.

So I keep mentioning the series, but what about this book? This is the first book that introduces all the major characters, the world they inhabit, and sets up all the threads for the series to come. I’ve already outlined and mapped out the full six books, but for practical reasons, I’m obviously focusing on one book at a time when it comes to publishing.

The future of the series hinges on the success of this first book. That doesn’t mean I’ll ever give up on trying to get it out to the public. I’ve been crafting this story for too long to let it go away that easy, and I’m too confident in it to believe there isn’t an audience, I just need to figure out the best way to find them.

The first book doesn’t follow a typical structure. Rather than one long tale, the book is divided up into five sections, each a largely self-contained story taking place within this world. Nes and her emergence into her new life acts as the anchor that holds all the stories together, and each one gives her a chance to experience something different, while at the same time offers me the chance to introduce the full cast of characters. Nes might be the heart of the series, but she’s not necessarily the most important character to the events being set in motion, especially this early in. I enjoyed using this style because I feel it best combines my love of short stories with the longer epics tales of a novel to create a unique experience and a solid introduction to an expansive universe

I urge anyone who is curious about this project to check out my website. I have an entire section dedicated to this series along with plenty of supplemental material meant to flesh out the world and give more insight to several of the characters.

Risks and challenges

I’m positive that there is an audience for this book. I’ve got no doubt in my mind about that, but it doesn’t mean finding that audience, especially through normal marketing, is going to be the easiest task. After a lot of discussion with others I’ve decided to call the genre a techno fantasy, as this seems to best fit the feel of the world, but really, it’s meant to draw from so many different genres, I’ve always been hard pressed to decide what to call it.

It’s generally easier to sell any kind of work when you can point to something else and tell a person, “It’s a lot like that.” People like to return to the works they know, and when they finish a novel they like, they want another one that’s very similar to it. I’m certainly no different, yet this causes a problem when trying to sell a book that pulls from so many different sources of inspiration. I’m sure there is another series that someone else can point to and say mine is a lot like it, but I’ve never encountered that series before, so I couldn’t say.

The other challenge is the fact that I’m not trying to sell a book, but a series. There’s a reason many movie trilogies begin with a self-contained story. Star Wars could’ve ended with Luke destroying the Death Star (uh…spoilers) and the story would’ve been complete enough to make audiences happy. Books generally get more leeway in regards to this, and people will accept that the first book isn’t meant to stand alone, but sets up many more stories to come. Yet, such an idea can be daunting, especially as a writer, because the first book has to be self-contained enough to leave a person feeling they got a worthwhile read, yet open ended enough to make a person want to come back for more.

The final challenge is the stress of it all. I’ve already written the completed first novel and I’ve outlined five more. I haven’t gone through a chapter by chapter breakdown of what every book will be, but that will come soon enough, and the more I put the finishing touches on my story, the more adamantly I want to show it to others. Yet here I wait, hoping the first book will be enough to get people interested in the story to come, while dreaming I can one day see the full six book box set on a bookshelf and know the story I first glimpsed while laying in my bedroom as a child has finally found its home.
