About

GENESIS CIMINNA is a non profit organization running a local museum and an archaeological site in Ciminna (PA) Sicily, Italy. The new museum is set within a 17th century Hospital which has been restored and turned into a Museum. Unfortunately, it was planned with no display so we have bare walls and old fashioned showcases. We have started to restore some paintings and statues locating them in their original settings. We have involved local students in the restoration of the paintings and statues making them aware of their own heritage and how vulnerable they are. So far we have saved several paintings and statues from neglect and ignorance. We have also saved our Historical Archive with books and documents dating back to the 1500s. Most of our finds and artifacts are in the storerooms awaiting to be shown to the public. The above has been possible thanks to local grants and a grant from the central government in Rome. It is part of our plan MuDiTe (Museo Diffuso Territoriale-Open Air Museum), where the aim is to create in Ciminna the facilities and services to improve and enhance the visitor's experience. The Museum will be the Visitor's Centre for the whole territory, the starting point and meeting point for all the activities and services. Within the Museum there will also be a book shop and a Laboratory classroom equiped with computers, enabling those who might be interested in the Museum's collections or in the history and archeology of Sicily to find out more about it. This computer room will allow us to organize proper classes during the year for students of all ages and for the local community.

Our aim is to create a new way of displaying the artifacts using the latest design and  technology such as new showcases, touch screens, computers and new mobile applications giving the visitor the opportunity to interact with what is on display stimulating his/her senses and curiosity to learn more about it. Local students will be trained as museum tour guides helping the visitor to understand and appreciate our heritage trying to exceed their expectations of a small provincial museum giving a "human and personal" touch to their experience. A new personalized museum experience possible only in a small local provincial museum where the Visitor will actually meet those who have worked on the archaeological digs, restorations and on the display itself and if they want they can also take part in an activity such as digging on an archaeological site, cleaning pottery, learning more about our history and archaeology.

The locals are already being involved through activities which have the purpose to teach them to respect, protect and keep Our/Their Heritage. These experiences will help them appreciate what they have inherited from the past, from their ancestors, making them aware that these "Heritage Resources" are unique and vulnerable. Once lost they are lost for ever making the community "poorer" rather than "richer". Furthermore, involving the local community in these activities makes them and will make feel as being part of something that will have a long lasting positive effect on their own community. Education creates jobs and wealth, ignorance creates unemployment and poverty. Our Museum can make the difference contributing in a positive way to the social-economic growth of the community by being one of the best museums in our region. We just need the tools to make it happen.

Our motto is:  OUR PAST IS OUR FUTURE.

Each generation is held responsable and has the duty and moral obligation to protect and hand down to the future generations the Cultural Heritage they possess.

Risks and challenges

Our plan needs the approval from the Sovrintendenza, local Heritage Authority. We will be planning and working side by side with them and every step we will make will have their blessing. Involving the local authorities will make the burocratic aspect easier to overcome.
The local council will take care of the security issues, they actually own the museum so it is their task. Our job is to promote and protect our heritage from oblivion and destruction.
