About this project
Last year, we wondered if anyone else thought that a 2016 Haikus With Hotties calendar (based on the non-award-winning photo + poetry series from the publication formerly known as Audrey Magazine) would be a perfect holiday gift for your friends who need more Asian American male hotties in their lives. And the response was a resounding YES: Nothing says "I love you" or "Please don't be sad all the way from Thanksgiving through Valentine's Day" better than a calendar reminder that yes, hot men are also literate.
This time around, a pharmacist friend of ours suggested that the only thing Haikus With Hotties fans might like more than a haiku exchange WITH hotties, is if the haikus were actually ON the hotties.
It was an intriguing challenge -- one that we weren't initially sure we could deliver. So, we went back to our unofficial Haikus With Hotties ambassadors Yoshi and Peter Sudarso to see whether this was even possible. (Yoshi is an actor who plays the Blue Ranger in Power Rangers Dino Charge, and it was recently announced that he was passing the torch onto his brother Peter, who will be the Blue Ranger in next year's Power Rangers Ninja Steel. They also have a YouTube channel Apartment210, but maybe you know them best from this really hot photo of them emerging from the ocean wearing zebra and pelican floaties for last year's Haikus With Hotties campaign.)
After some trial and error, the haiku (From the makers of / Haikus With Hotties now comes / Haikus On Hotties) was successfully painted on their pectoral muscles and abdominal regions. And then we splattered paint all over them. Because poetically-speaking, we felt that the juxtaposition of the, um.... Actually, no need to give away the mundane details of our haiku hottie methodology, all you need to know is that it resulted in photos like this being unleashed into the universe.
SO WE'RE DOING IT! HAIKUS ON HOTTIES 2017!
This time around, they write one haiku, and the only rule is that it has to be about hotness. And we have to figure out a way to get it on them -- whether it's on clothing, their bodies or some other creative interpretation of Haikus On Hotties. Here's a taste of a few of the hotties and in-progress calendar designs that we have so far:
Actor Gerrard Lobo, aka the hot guy from Master of None. I know, I know what you're thinking: "No, Aziz Ansari is the hot guy from Master of None!" Or "Kelvin Yu is the hot guy from Master of None!" Yea yea yea, we know, but what we meant is the hot guy with the muscles.
Hottie celebrity chef Ronnie Woo, who you may recognize as the host of LOGO's Food to Get You Laid or as a contributor to OWN's Home Made Simple and Good Day LA. He also made an appearance on the FABLife, where he shares his recipe for pan-fried chicken breasts with Chrissy Teigen, and she, in return, makes him do his cooking demonstration with his shirt off.
Vishavjit Singh is a New York City based cartoonist, writer, performance artist and creator of www.Sikhtoons.com. He got his spark for cartooning post 9/11 tragedy when Americans with turbaned and bearded countenance became targets of hate/bias crimes. For the past few years he has been traveling across the US with his Captain America alter-ego armed with turban, beard, humor to disarm fear, anxiety and intolerance. He is ever ready to serve your community as long as you can offer him some gustatory pleasures.
Kenta Seki's abs can be seen often on his Instagram, where he strikes yoga poses in Greece, flexes on high bars, and shows you how to use one of those ab roller wheels. Kenta himself was recently called "the fitness word's next big thing" and "Jillian Michael's sexy protegee," and he can be seen on Jillian's docu-series Just Jillian as well as hosting his own Total Body and Core workout videos on FitFusion.com.
So that's just a quick teaser...
We have more hotties that we'll be announcing throughout the campaign. But you should know that we don't have ALL 13 yet (12 months + cover model). We still have about 5 slots left, so if you have strong feelings about who MUST be on the calendar, tweet Ada Tseng (@adatseng) to tell us "I need [NAME OF HOT MAN] @twitterhandlehere on my 2017 #HaikusOnHotties calendar. It is a matter of life & hotness! kck.st/2cn0HS4"
Keep in mind though, even though Hollywood doesn't realize it yet, there are way more than enough Asian American hotties to fill up at least 8 calendars a year, so we can't get everybody.... but we'll do our best to pick a hot mix of 13.
But we can promise that you, the fans, will have a say in how the final calendar looks, because once we have all 13, we will be holding a vote to see who your favorite 2017 hottie is, and the one with the most votes will go on the cover.
How to Support:
This time around, we are working independently, so we could actually use the funds to produce the calendar (whereas last year, we only needed enough money to convince our publisher to fund us). But this is first and foremost a project for the fans -- and all profits will go to support Angry Asian Man -- so we're being very economical with our budget and have confidence that we can put it together very simply WITH YOUR HELP!
The Kickstarter money we raise will go into 1) printing costs -- which makes up the bulk of our budget -- and 2) costs for labor and production (photographers, our designer, producer, editor, and, of course, potential props for the hot men to hold)
So support us AND more importantly, support Angry Asian Man, Phil Yu's award-winning blog about Asian America which he's been producing for the benefit of the community for 15 YEARS. Doesn't hurt that he's kinda hot too, amirite?
Risks and challenges
Look, this is happening. So the only risk is that we won't make our Kickstarter goal, we'll have to self-fund, and we won't be able to donate as much of the profits to Angry Asian Man as we'd like. So come on, help a Korean American brother out. And don't make us do so much math, with the subtracting, adding and maybe dividing. Just fund the production costs so we can finish making the calendar and not worry about any of that. Plus you get a sticker!
As for all other "risks and challenges" -- for example, hot men ignoring/rejecting us and us having to contact other hot men; wondering if our "careers" or "public images" are affected by people judging our commitment to hotness when there are much more serious issues going on in the world; really wanting one of the hotties to do a photo spoof of those Carl's Jr. burger commercials (sexily eating burgers at the beach or while sitting on a luxury car) but having failed to convince any of them so far -- don't worry, we'll handle it.
