About this project
2/17/2012 - We received an endorsement from Ubisoft, the maker of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood.
For the Leonardo aficionado...
We create museum-quality model kits based on Leonardo da Vinci's sketches of mechanical and war machines that hobbyists, students and enthusiasts of all ages can assemble, finish, display and admire in their home or office. Each model is authentically recreated with both form and function in mind, incorporating moving components that demonstrate how the inventions would have actually worked in real life.
BARRAGE TANK - our flagship model kit
Barrage Tank is an artistic and functional scale model kit authentically recreated from Leonardo da Vinci's famous 1487 armored car design. This kit consists of 390 individual wood and aluminum components. The finished product makes a perfect conversation piece that is ideal for display in your home or office. It also makes an excellent educational gift that will inspire and motivate students to further explore the scientific and engineering genius of Leonardo da Vinci.
100% wood and metal.
Especially unique to Barrage Tank is the fully functional drive system that perfectly demonstrates da Vinci's gear designs. As you roll Barrage Tank over a flat surface, the wheels actually turn their respective engaged lantern gears. Check out the video below!
Not long ago my son Wesley was browsing through Leonardo's Machines, a picture book depicting many of da Vinci's amazing inventions. He focused in on the armored car, curious about how it worked. I explained the best I could, but without a tangible model, it was difficult for him to grasp the concept.
Feeling frustrated about not being able to capitalize on this learning experience, I decided to build him a working model of da Vinci's gear design. After a few nights of drawing, cutting, sanding and gluing, I finally banged it out. My son cranked the handle and watched in delight at how the mechanical parts engaged together to produce movement.
For fun, I decided to make several more models for Wesley's friends... to my expectations, they were an instant hit. Their parents really liked the educational aspect of it. From this experience, I thought about how great it would be if I could reach more people with this little gadget... and that's how Da Vinci Replicas got started.
I selected Barrage Tank as our "flagship" model kit because it's one of the most well-known inventions by da Vinci. It's also prominently featured in one of the play segments of the Assassin's Creed Brotherhood video game by Ubisoft Corp.
Last month we finally completed the prototype stage and have outlined a manufacturing plan. We're ready to move into production, but with more than 390 individual parts per kit, it takes about 3 hours to prep each kit. Basically, the only way to increase production output is to add equipment. There is where a partnership with kickstarter.com and its members makes sense.
$2,500. The funds will go towards a CNC machine, tooling, packaging design and materials. Any amount raised in excess of the target will go towards moving operations out of my garage.
Thank you for contributing at any level; we really appreciate your support!
(Note: shipping is included in the price for shipments to the continental USA)
$5: One SOUVENIR WHEEL from the Barrage Tank. They make great coasters because of the minimal contact with the table surface. Measures 3.5" dia.
$12: A pack of three coaster wheels.$79: BARRAGE TANK: Get our flagship model kit for a special kickstarter price of $79. (compared to regular retail price of $99 + $13S/H).
$300: BARRAGE TANK (assembled): We'll ship you one fully assembled, beautifully stained, painted and meticulously finished display model of BARRAGE TANK. Ready to be admired and displayed straight out of the box. Let us know if you want the open window panel option.
(Approx 14" in diameter, 7" height)
Yes. We have other designs of other da Vinci inventions lined up for the future; check our website http://www.davincireplicas.com for updates.
This is such a fantastic idea! I know Revelle makes DIY Da Vinci kits but they haven't made the Barrage Tank...
Unlike the Revelle kits, we do not laser cut our parts because it leaves burnt edges and smoke effects on the pieces. We strive to produce models that are museum-quality and authentic to da Vinci's original designs.
