Stop, is a video installation of images of youth from Brooklyn & Liverpool who state the multiple times they were stopped by police.

Stop Happens!

Or more accurately, Stop will happen. We surpassed goal #1 of $2150! The past few days have been very encouraging I want to thank you all for the support so far!

Final Goal = $3600

To fully realize my vision for the project, I want to go to Liverpool to participate in the video shoot there. To do this, I need to reach $3600 in contributions. If you haven’t backed the project, please back it for at least $1. You’ll become part of broad base of support bringing this important project to life. And with this backing, you will be connected to the project and get updates about it in the coming months.

Project description

Stop will be a video installation. It will put faces to the numbers — hundreds of thousands — of people who are unjustly detained by police.

I need funds to complete it. It comes out of a collaboration between myself, Joann Kushner an artist in Liverpool UK, and young adults in Brooklyn and Liverpool who we have been working with since 2011.

Last year New York police stopped almost 700,000 people as part of their “Stop and Frisk” policy. The overwhelming majority, about 90%, were doing nothing wrong at the time and were completely innocent. Most were young and Black or Latino. A similar policy exists in Liverpool and developed after NY police chief William Bratton was invited to be a consultant with his counterpart in Hartlepool UK, in 1996. In the UK, young adults of all races have been criminalized.

Stop will be a projection of portraits of several youth from East New York Brooklyn and Liverpool, UK. Brooklyn will be on one wall and Liverpool will face them on the other. The life-sized projections will stand and face each other, the audience will be in the middle. Over time each of the young adults will reveal how many times (35, 50, 83, etc) they have each been stopped by the police during their lifetime. The youth will be having a virtual “conversation” across an ocean with each other as well as with the audience. The audience will see the faces and bodies and hear the in their own voices the numbers that cause them to be viewed as statistics.

But this can only happen if I reach the fundraising goal by August 7th. You can pledge using the BACK THIS PROJECT button in the right hand column on this page.

The larger project, Post Code Criminals, gives voice to Liverpool and New York community concerns about contemporary policing strategies, which effectively criminalize youth based on the neighborhood they live in.

I’ve been leading workshops with young adults from East NY Brooklyn (a neighborhood with one of the city’s highest police Stop and Frisk rates) since last December and Joann has been working with similar youth in Liverpool. We have been teaching them photography and art. They have made work about their communities and the police intervention in their lives.

This multi faceted project will be exhibited in Rush Arts Gallery. The show opens September 13, 2012.

Using cell phones, our students have made a powerful series of photographs about their neighborhoods and lives. Stop needs to be part of this exhibit and I need your support to make this video installation happen.

What is the money for?

Production costs. Your support will enable me to rent lights ($300), professional HD video cameras ($375), studios to shoot the video ($675), assistant ($200). It will also pay for backdrops, cabs, car rentals and many miscellaneous things to support the shoot ($600). All this is for video sessions in both Brooklyn and Liverpool.

The Kickstarter goal of $2150 is for two video shoots - one in Liverpool and one in Brooklyn. However this is a minimum to make this project happen and relies on my Liverpool collaborators to shoot their part without me present. I really want to go to Liverpool to participate in the shoot there, and to do this I’ll need an additional $1450. Being on hand to do the shoot myself will make the project stronger and I’d be able to meet with people there to advance plans for bringing the project to Liverpool. So I'd like your help to make this happen too.

What will it look like?

The installation is straightforward. There will be life sized projections of the young adults on opposite walls.  They will stand fairly motionless through the length of the video; a cross between a full length portrait and part of a collective line of youth from their city. The audience will walk between the two rows and have the opportunity to look at the portraits and hear the numbers of stops each person has been subject to. Collectively it will be an ever-increasing number.

Rewards

If you give, you will also receive. I’ve put together some great rewards. If you contribute you can have one of them. Take a look at the right hand column to find the one that is right for you. With some of the rewards, I'm selling my past work in order to raise funds for this piece. If you just want to give money to the project, that's great too, but I'm happy to pass on some of my work in exchange.
