MUT Runner is a 30-35min film project that I'd like to see come to fruition in the Spring of 2014.
The film will aim to present what I see as being an evolution in the sport of Mountain-Ultra-Trail Running.
How a new breed of speedy runners who break course records and compete for prize money have emerged..
How the influence of prize money, corporate sponsorship and international competition have changed the dynamic of the sport.
Also included will be an exclusive, inside look at running as a full-time lifestyle:
The storyline will chronologically follow a part of my 2013 training and racing season with an account of what it's really like to be a professional Mountain-Ultra-Trail Runner who travels the world and uses their legs to earn a living.
Along the way there will be a slew of interviews with some very speedy runners and ambassadors of the sport who have been around for decades. Each interviewee shares their opinions and perspectives on the changing dynamic of the sport and what the future may hold.
Included in the film will be a ton of informative training content and advice from these top runners and ambassadors, as well as some of my personal training/racing details.
I've already begun capturing footage and interviews from around the world including New Zealand, The Swiss Alps, The Canary Islands, and my training grounds in the mountains of Colorado. As my preview shows though, there is a lot of work to be done! This is where this Kickstarter page and funding platform (and perhaps YOU?!) come in:
To really take this project to the next level I need to upgrade my video editing software…iMovie just isn't going to cut it!
Also, for additional, high quality footage and stills a second camera (SLR) would really be great to have. My audio so far has also been something that needs an upgrade and a better mic or some software to help clear things up would also be a true gift.
After adding more and more footage to pull together and edit I'll also need another one (or two) external drives to store and organize all these files!
Finally, to conduct some more interviews with high profile runners and ambassadors of the sport I'll need a little bit of travel/gas money.
Any extra money that goes beyond my $1800 goal will be used to compensate musicians and/or interviewees for their time and effort for contributing to this film.
If you decide to donate you will not only be supporting a creative dream; you will also be supporting the sport of Mountain-Ultra-Trail running and helping share (what I hope will be) inspirational, artistic and informative content.
Yours in Running,
Risks and challenges
I'm not a professional film-maker or videographer. I'm a professional runner. I don't have a film crew following me around and there won't be any helicopter shots of me running up and down mountains. My girlfriend Sandi Nypaver (who is quite the writer, runner, and artist: https://www.facebook.com/BelieveArt) is helping me get some shots, but otherwise it is pretty much a solo effort.
This is my first major film project and while I don't want it to turn out to be something like the Blair Witch Project I can't promise you it will be Indie Film Festival quality. (But really, if you like some of my better videos on my YouTube channel, Vo2max Productions my goal is to take the production and editing quality up a couple notches at least). I may fall and break a new camera trying to film myself. I may not edit a storyline that follows a cohesive theme, and I will probably have a few audio clips that should not have been shot in the wind! I could end up delayed or with not enough footage (or wanting to follow my running season/travels/interviews late into the spring). Ultimately though I want to create something that is inspiring, artistic and informative. I want it to be something you'll be proud of if you decide to contribute.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
