2008 documentary, “The Business of Being Born”, is a humorous and provocative
examination of childbirth in the US (click to see trailer) that has become a
“must-see” for expectant parents. The film has spawned an acclaimed book,
Your Best Birth, a thriving online community at http://www.mybestbirth.com and legions of supporters
who attest that the film “changed everything they thought they knew about
birth.” Making the film was a huge labor of love for us (no pun
intended); we shared intimate footage of our own births, funded the entire project
ourselves, and fell way short of making our money back. But, like any new
mom, we’ve forgotten the pain and we’re ready to do it all over again.
Now we’re giving birth to quadruplets. “More Business of Being Born” is our new series of four films that deepens the conversation about childbirth options, supporting every woman’s right to empowerment and accurate information during the birth process. We’ve also completed a 28-minute Classroom Version of “The Business of Being Born” with a comprehensive study guide to reach younger women in University settings.
This is where we need your help. We’ve made these films with a microscopic budget, once again funded out of our own pockets. The original filmmaking team has worked for free, but we’ve come as far as we can on our own. We made these films because we wanted women to question the established business of birth – the idea that every birth is an emergency requiring doctors, painkillers and myriad medical procedures. We’ve reached the conclusion that a healthier birthing process means healthier babies and healthier moms; however, our films can’t have any impact if they are not seen. We need a budget to promote and market these videos, to make sure that they reach as many expectant parents as possible. To acquire that budget, we need your help.
Why did we decide to make “More Business of Being Born”?
After touring the US, Australia and UK and hosting dozens of screenings of “The Business of Being Born,” we realized that parents-to-be still needed more answers and guidance. Audiences were deeply impacted by the film, but still had specific and basic questions like “What is the difference between a doula and a midwife?” So we knew our work wasn’t finished yet. We felt a responsibility to bring more of this information into the mainstream, where it is sorely lacking. Having a water birth at home is only appealing or appropriate for a very small percentage of parents, but there is a whole world of options and alternatives that need to be researched carefully to ensure a positive birth experience. But parents cannot be proactive in the birth process unless they are informed and empowered. We wanted to continue putting that decision-making power back in the hands of the parents, where it belongs.
When do we plan to release the series?
We are planning on an October 2011 release to retail, movies on demand, iTunes, etc.
What is our Kickstarter goal? What will the money go to?
Our goal is to raise $100,000. This money will be used to both finish the films and fund their marketing and publicity, including hiring a publicist, hiring an online marketing company, and funding campaigns on Facebook, Twitter, and various other marketing outlets. The ultimate goal is to make the information found in our films, as well as on our website, available to as many pregnant and soon-to-be-pregnant women as possible!
Can we exceed the goal?
Yes yes yes! The more funds we raise, the more empowered we are to put More Business of Being Born in the public eye and spread the word about everyone’s right to be an active participant in their own birth decisions.
Can donors increase pledges once they have been made?
Absolutely! If you have already donated, and are signed in to your account, then instead of a green “Back This Project” button on our page, there should be a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click that, and you can enter a new amount or choose a new incentive!
What do donors receive for giving?
Aside from the pride of being part of a revolution in the birthing paradigm, our incentive packages include copies of the films themselves, merchandise signed by we, the filmmakers (Ricki and Abby), and some very special packages for the most generous givers.
How much is shipping?
Shipping is included in all minimum pledge amounts!
When can I Skype with Abby and Ricki, go to my private screening, or have Ricki and Abby host my baby shower?
Ricki and Abby will contact you about your Skype session, which will likely happen in the months after the Kickstarter campaign ends. Ricki will be starting her new talk show in 2012, however, and will be extremely busy in the months leading up to it, so the private screening, dinner, and baby shower hostings will not be able to happen until 2012.
How will you know where to send my incentives, or what t-shirt size I wear?
After our deadline, we will send you a Kickstarter message (which automatically forwards to the email address you gave Kickstarter) requesting all the necessary information, from shipping and email address to t-shirt size to Skype chat scheduling.
Can I gift an incentive?
Gifting an incentive is a wonderful idea, especially if you know someone who is expecting! After the campaign, when we message you for details on your incentives, you can then give us the information for the person you wish to gift.
What happens if the goal isn’t reached in time?
If we don’t reach our goal, we don’t get any money – and if we can’t fund the marketing for these films, then our ability to spread the word about empowered birthing will be severely hampered. Let’s not let that happen!
How can I contact you?
You can reach us at firstname.lastname@example.org – feel free to email with questions, comments, or happy thoughts! Just be aware that we get a lot of emails, so please give it a few days for us to respond!
