In addition to the teaser video above, here are two great video reviews from Paul Genesse and Gregory Wilson that will give you a great idea of what the series and the third book are like.
Welcome to the Kickstarter for The Flames of Shadam Khoreh, the concluding volume in The Lays of Anuskaya trilogy.
What is The Lays of Anuskaya? To give you some idea, I'll share one of my favorite blurbs from author Gregory A. Wilson:
"If Anton Chekhov had thought to stage The Three Sisters onboard a windship, with a mix of Arabian Nights and Minority Report thrown in for good measure, the result would have been Bradley Beaulieu’s The Winds of Khalakovo—a startling combination of fantastic elements which seems at once both comfortably familiar and refreshingly new. It’s a wild ride well worth taking, and an exceptional debut from an author who takes risks and consistently delivers."
In many ways, this is a Kickstarter for all three books in The Lays of Anuskaya trilogy. The first two books in the series, The Winds of Khalakovo and The Straits of Galahesh, were published by Night Shade Books in 2011 and 2012. Due to a variety of reasons, I have parted ways with the publisher. After the very positive experience with my first Kickstarter for my premiere short story collection, Lest Our Passage Be Forgotten & Other Stories, I knew that I could follow in the footsteps of giants like Terry Goodkind and Brandon Sanderson and get this book out directly to the fans of this series. I'm very excited to bring this book to readers like you, those who love epic fantasy with a grand, sweeping scope, a complex plot filled with politics and betrayal, and characters that remain with you well beyond the turning of the page.
I invite you to watch the video, to look through the reward levels, and see if there's something there for you. If not, I still hope that you'll spread the news around for this Kickstarter. Even if it's not for you, your friends and family may really enjoy it. Thanks for looking, and if you decide to take the plunge, you have my heartfelt thanks. I won't let you down. Believe me, the series really ended with a bang.
Stretch Goal 1 — UNLOCKED! — $6,000 — All backers receive an ePack of my short story collection, Lest Our Passage Be Forgotten & Other Stories.
Stretch Goal 2 — UNLOCKED! — $7,500 — Interior art! I'll work with an artist to create three pieces of art, one for each book in the trilogy.
Stretch Goal 3 — UNLOCKED! — $9,000 — Bookmarks! I'll print up bookmarks and include three of them with each of the physical reward levels, one for you and two for your friends. I'll design the bookmarks myself, though which art will be used is still TBD.
Stretch Goal 4 — $10,000 — More interior art! I'll work with an artist to create six pieces of art, two for each book in the trilogy. Plus, this will unlock tee-shirt rewards. Backers at any level can upgrade their pledge to receive a tee shirt with one of the artwork pieces on them.
Stretch Goal 5 — $11,000 — The number of ARCs that will be given away in the raffle will be upgraded from 3 to 6 copies. You cannot win two of these, but you can win one from this raffle and one from the artwork raffle.
Stretch Goal 6 — $12,000 — The number of signed prints to be given away in the artwork raffle will be doubled, from 6 to 12 (two of each print). Again, you cannot win two of these, but you can win one from this raffle and one from the ARC raffle.
Stretch Goal 7 — $12,500 — I'll write and afterword for the trilogy and include it at the end of The Flames of Shadam Khoreh. I'll go into my inspirations for the novels, what the project meant to me personally, and my impressions of the project now that it's complete.
Nearly two years after the harrowing events of The Straits of Galahesh, Atiana and Nikandr continue their long search for Nasim. The clues they find lead them to the desert wastes of the Gaji, where the fabled valley of Shadam Khoreh lies.
But all is not well. War has moved from the islands to the mainland, and the Grand Duchy knows its time may be limited if Yrstanla rallies its forces. Worse, the wasting disease and the rifts grow ever wider, threatening places that once thought themselves safe. The Dukes believe that their only hope may be to treat with the Haelish warriors to the west of Yrstanla, but Nikandr knows that the key is to find Nasim and a lost artifact known as the Atalayina.
Will Nikandr succeed and close the rifts once and for all? The answer lies deep within the Flames of Shadam Khoreh.
Advance reviews for The Flames of Shadam Khoreh have already begun to come in. Rising Shadow calls Flames "OUTSTANDING!" (in capital letters).
Both The Winds of Khalakovo and The Straits of Galahesh were very well received. Here are some of the many reviews that came in for the first two books in the series:
—C.S. Friedman, Bestselling author of the Coldfire and Magister trilogies on The Winds of Khalakovo
—Glen Cook, Author of The Black Company on The Winds of Khalakovo
—A Staffer’s Musings on The Winds of Khalakovo
—The Ranting Dragon on The Winds of Khalakovo
—Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist on The Straits of Galahesh
—Tor.com on The Straits of Galahesh
—Adventures Fantastic on The Straits of Galahesh
You can find these and many more reviews of the first two books on the reviews page of my website.
During this Kickstarter only, and for the first time, I'm offering hardcovers (clothbound with gold foil stamp and dust jackets) for The Lays of Anuskaya trilogy. These hardcovers will not be for general sale after the Kickstarter. I will be ordering extra to meet a minimum print run of 100 copies, and some for my own use (including promotions), but they won't be available generally once the Kickstarter ends, so this is your chance to get a real collectors item, as these books have not been offered in hardcover before.
All three books have been given new covers with a unified theme. What follows are the newly designed covers for all three books.
Risks and challenges
There are typically a few major challenges to overcome in a project like this. The first is the cover art and cover design. Both of these have already been completed. I've contacted artist Aaron J. Riley and arranged for the use of his wonderful artwork for this novel. The second challenge is to get the book written and copy edited. This step has already been completed, using the same copy editor as I did for the first two books, so The Flames of Shadam Khoreh will have the same high quality editing as did The Winds of Khalakovo and The Straits of Galahesh.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
