About this project
ATTENTION ALL POTENTIAL & CURRENT BACKERS
All Tiers will be closed once our Campaign Fund reaches $200,000. This is to help us begin focusing on getting our Campaign rolling and to also help keep ourselves sane when we starting paying the "lovely" Gubbament their taxes... -_-
However we do have an email waiting list, so sign up today! You can also visit our new website!

I want to address our potential backers, the ones who want an assembled Codex but can't receive one because the Tiers are closed. We really, really wish we could open up more tiers, but it simply isn't possible to do so for the remainder of this campaign. The reason being is because we are such a small team and can only assembly these suckers so fast; not to mention that we will only have one machine and it can only cut so fast. Then there is the fact that this is our very first campaign and from what I've seen, MANY kickstarter campaigns fail because they promised too much and end up failing, which in turn leads to no one getting a reward (sad day). We have limited ourselves to the current number because we want to not only keep ourselves sane but also protect our backers in case something were to go horribly wrong and we'd end up having to refund all of our backers! However, this is not the only chance to get a Codex as once the campaign is finished and every current backer has their reward, we will begin again producing more Codices for all who wish for one.
I would also highly suggest that you hover around the campaign though and watch those closed tiers. Many times, backers will switch to a different tier or cancel their pledge altogether (reasons unknown) which would open up a slot that you could snatch up then!
Also make sure to check back right before the Campaign ends because quite a few people will suddenly get cold feet or are trolls and drop out right before the Campaign ends thus opening up the slots that are currently closed. Again I sincerely apologize that there are no more lower tier slots. We did not expect to reach our goal in the first 6 hours, let alone beat all of our stretch goals in 3 days!
Regards, Brady, Hanna, and Koda
If you have any questions, make sure to check out our FAQ at the bottom of this page which is filled with tons of great information!
Codex Silenda is a five page book that features five intricate puzzles. Each page features a unique puzzle that requires the user/reader to unlock the corresponding bolts in order to progress to the next page.
As the puzzler moves through the book, a story begins to unfold, depicting the story of an apprentice in Da Vinci's Workshop who encounters the same Codex. However in the story the Codex acts as a trap set by Da Vinci to capture any would be spies/snoopy apprentices in order to protect his work. The only way to escape is to solve each of the puzzles before the master returns from his trip.
What Inspired The Codex?
The problem with puzzles today is they are either simple and cheap or hand crafted and supremely expensive. Yet once you've solved either type of puzzle, you know the solution and have no desire to ever play with the puzzle again. The Codex addresses this issue of replayability by offering five puzzles in one, an intriguing story that ties everything together and a hidden storage compartment. On top of that, the beautiful design makes it perfect for putting on display in your home!
So Tell Us About The Puzzles Themselves!
The first page is known as the Mechanical Iris, the portal that pulls in the apprentice after he attempts to open the puzzle book. Can you figure what is preventing the Iris from opening too?
On the second page the user will encounter the Rotating Maze. A central dais and a peg must be used in a unique, dual-like motion in order to traverse the maze; however the catch is that the dais also hides the maze from the user’s view. How can you navigate a maze when you can’t even see where you are going?
The third page is called Geneva Gears, featuring a Geneva Wheel Mechanism and a series of gears hidden beneath a floor with various channels running throughout it. There are also six wheels which are also attached to gears of their own. The puzzler must place the gears in their respective places in order to unlock the page, but there are more slots than gears, so where do they fit? (Side Note: The final version of this page may feature changes to the design layout)
The fourth page has the unusual name of Paradox Sliders. There are fourteen sliders present and you are told that they all must be properly aligned in their respective positions in order to unlock the holding hooks and releasing the bolts. Guessing could work but that could also take forever, so how do you figure out the order of the sliders? (Side Note: The final version of this page may feature changes to the design layout)
The fifth and final page is all that remains between the apprentice & his freedom and you & your hard-earned reward. The problem is the page is locked with a four rune code in a language unlike any other. What do the runes even mean?
Crafted by Lasers, Assembled by Hand
The Codex is only made possible by the advent of laser cutting technology, which allows something as complex as the puzzle book to be made quickly, precisely, and consistently on a large scale. However, we can't make the Codex unless we can get the right kind of machine with the right amount of power and speed to properly produce the Codex so all can enjoy it's mystery and wonder. Once our final testing is finished, we will start assembling and shipping the Codices out immediately. If everything mostly follows our established timeline, our goal is to ship all of our early bird Codices by Christmas. However, this is not a guarantee and should a problem arise, we will immediately update our backers about the exact issue and how we are addressing it. Yet, if we do succeed in getting all early bird codices shipped out, we will then begin immediately assembling and shipping the rest of our rewards on a first come, first serve basis with preference to the higher tier backers.
(NOTE) - Because we are assembling the Codices ourselves and not through an overseas manufacturer, we will have to limit the number of our assembled Codices to a maximum of 400 total so we don't over promise and end up putting ourselves in an early grave ;) However, once all backers have received their Codex we will gladly continue taking orders afterwards and keep producing them for all who wish to have a Codex.
That's where you and all the other Kickstarter backers come in, we need YOUR help to bring this amazing puzzle to life! All funding will go to the purchase and setup of the laser cutter required to produce the Codex and the materials necessary to produce enough Codices for all respective backers. Even greater news is if the campaign is successful, we plan on bringing even more versions of Codices to life, ranging from Demonic/Angelic Tomes to Arcane Texts to Summoner Spellbooks and more!
Meet the Team behind the Codex
Brady Whitney is the designer of the operation, the mastermind of the Codex. He originally came up with the idea for his senior thesis research project during his final semester at Iowa State University. Having grown up with a childhood filled with imagination, his passion for design has always been focused on the realm of Toys & Games, creating the products and ideas he always wished he had as a kid.
Hanna Humphrey is the brains of the operation, helping to ensure everything is properly prepared and done right. Her extensive knowledge in customer service and various connections in the business world have helped the Codex operation hit the ground running. She also serves as the final checkpoint on all decisions made by the Codex Team.
Koda the Labrador is the heart of the operation, providing the emotional foundation of stability and encouragement to keep the team moving forward. However, everything he does in only in the self-serving nature of receiving pats on the head otherwise known as "loves" since that's all that really matters to a dog after all.
The Reward Classes
In exchange for helping support our mission, we are offering various levels (classes) of rewards depending on your level of involvement. Our classes are as follows:
- Well-wishers ($ 5 +) - Codex Runic Type Font download
- Believers ($35+) - T-Shirt & 5 Codex Coasters
- Benefactors ($55+) - Single Codex Puzzle Page Assembled
- Pupils ($125+) - The Codex (Not Assembled)
- EARLY BIRDS - $25-50 off and Receive Your Tier by Christmas!
- Apprentices ($175+) - The Codex (Assembled/Hidden Prize (HP))
- Journeymen ($275+) - Personalized Codex + (Assembled/HP)
- Masters ($450+) - Fully Customized Codex + (Assembled/HP/etc.)
- Craftsman ($80+) - Codex Laser Cutting Files for Download (Protected by Creative Commons License, See below)
(Both Coasters and T-Shirts can be selected by stating the name of the design, starting from left to right: Iris, Maze, Geneva, Paradox, Cryptex)
To be perfectly honest, it is not all cheap or fast to ship internationally with such a big object like the Codex; as far as I can tell, it can be roughly about $100 to ship one Codex! We want everyone to enjoy a Codex but also realize that $100 is ALOT to spend on shipping. We have included an example of how an International backers pledge would add up:
- Chosen Reward Tier + International Shipping (Australia) = Total Cost
- Apprentice ($175) + Shipping Cost ($100) = $275 pledge
We will continue researching this issue throughout the campaign in an effort to find ways to help reduce these costs, but wanted to give fair warning to our international backers to help reduce sticker shock.
The Stretch Goals
Finally, we are excited to offer Stretch goals which can be unlocked once the funding goal is reached and each successive funding amount is reached. (For further details on each level, scroll past the Stretch Goals)
$40K Level - Once we reach this funding milestone, a new 6th puzzle page can be permanently added to the Codex for a small increase in your existing pledge. Kickstarter Exclusive means that only the backers of the Codex during this campaign will be able to receive this special puzzle as a special thank you for believing in our campaign! (If you choose this upgrade, please make a note of this on your pledge.)
$60K Level - At this level, all respective backers that wish to receive the Single Page Reward Tier will have the option to instead receive a lockable chest featuring the puzzle of their choice as the lid and lock of the box! (If you choose this upgrade, please make a note of this on your pledge.)
$80K Level - For this level, we will offer a new reward tier for the Codex Laser Cutting files to download for $80! For the backers that have pledged more than $80, they will receive the file download for free as part of their current pledge tier. (Only Available to $80+ Level Backers, if you are a higher tier backer, we ask that you not downgrade your pledge as this can cause us to drop below the stretch goal and thus lose this reward for everyone!)
$100K Level - Our biggest goal yet, we will offer a 7th Puzzle page which can be permanently added to the Codex for a small increase to your existing pledge. Kickstarter Exclusive means that only the backers of the Codex during this campaign will be able to receive this special puzzle as a special thank you for believing in our campaign! (If you choose this upgrade, please make a note of this on your pledge.)
Risks and challenges
Right now we only have a proof of concept prototype, where most of the puzzles work seamlessly while one or two require further testing and refinement. However we do not have access to a powerful enough laser cutter, which needs to be capable of cutting 1/4" thick wood accurately and quickly. This in turn will allow us to make a stronger book and use far less material more efficiently. The challenge is to finish final testing and refinement of the Codex by September ideally, November at the latest.
Of course life does not slow down for even the Codex Team and we will be dealing with a move across the nation to Connecticut during August so Brady can begin working at his first real job out of college. Rest assured, we have also included this development in our delivery schedule.
Finally, once we have the manufacturing process nailed down, our next challenge is to immediately start producing and shipping Codices to our early bird backers so they can receive their Codices by Christmas. After that, it will simply be producing and shipping the remaining Codices and reward tiers to all backers hopefully by the end of Spring in 2017.
While we believe we have most of our bases covered, no one can prepare for every contingency (except Batman) and we will keep our backers constantly updated as we progress along this exciting campaign!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
