What is DO IT FOR UMMA?

Featuring a chorus of ajummas and a healthy dose of revenge, DO IT FOR UMMA is an absurd tragicomedy about a young Korean American woman trying to gain her dead mother’s approval and protect her family’s honor in the strangest of circumstances à la Hamlet...except with lots more ladies, lots more familial obligation (because, #Korean) and a cast of characters representative of 2016, not of the late 16th century...aka DIVERSITY.

What do we want to do with this show?

We want to fill Theatre Off Jackson's seats with butts. Butts of all kinds! Butts of color, white butts, butts of all genders, small butts, big butts, happy butts, sad butts, butts in jorts, butts in bodysuits, and butts that can't lie. Theatre Off Jackson is a wheelchair accessible venue so seats are accessible for ALL BUTTS. The theatre will have gender neutral restrooms during the run so YOUR butt can do its business wherever it wants.

Here's why we know we can do this!

WE'VE DONE IT BEFORE AND IT WE CAN DO IT AGAIN. This past February, we sold-out every single night of our run at Annex Theatre (we literally sold more than 100% of our tickets. #icanteven) BUT! We still need your help to bring this show to hungry Asian Americans. This play was produced for Asian Americans, without apology, with compassion, with a wicked sense of humor and Asian Americans responded-we built it, and they came. The most UMMAZING  thing that will happen with this second production is  the continuation of building audiences within the Asian American community. We are using our super awesome connects to create community partnerships with Asian student orgs, POC (People of Color) small business owners, and other non-profits dedicated to providing resources and opportunities to POCs all over Seattle. We have also received some funding from 4Culture and the City of Seattle Office of Arts and Culture!

Here's how YOU can help make it possible!

Your donation will go directly towards putting butts in theatre seats. Our goal is $5,000 with a stretch goal of $6,000. This money will cover the rest of our modest budget costs AND, if we make our goal, a whopping 30% ($1,200) will be allocated towards purchasing seats in the theatre. At an average cost of $12 per ticket, this allows us to buy 100 seats. With 8 performances, this averages out to about 12 "free" seats per evening. These seats will be offered to a various list of organizations, business, and community groups in the local Seattle area.

As AAPIs (Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders) it is our desire to give back as allies to the #BlackLivesMatter movement through concrete vocal and financial support. And, we recognize AAPIs benefit from the victories won by Black liberation movement. If our stretch goal of $6,000 is met, we will be able to donate the same amount of $1,200 to the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

We already know (hope?) that you are going to come see UMMA and you're going to tell your friends and they're going to come. But we STILL need your help to bring this show to people who aren't going to hear about this show or who, for lack of resources, are not able to attend.

Risks and challenges

We're still going to do this show even if we don't make our goal. BUT, without this money, our offer of seats is not possible. Your contribution allows us to invest in our audiences, POC and otherwise--at little to no risk to THEM.
