About

Started in 2009, SMART (Student Multiethnic Action Research Team) is a youth-led decision-making body which advocates and organizes for better education for English Language Learner students and their families.

Fresh off an organizing win this summer -- challenging the head of DC Public Schools to commit to their demands for a newcomer student council and providing more opportunities for credit recovery for ELLs (they secured this meeting through a flash mob! http://bit.ly/PEFa1N) -- SMART is poised to create greater equity for the District's immigrant families.

The clip above gives a teaser of what the SMART documentary would be about -- this film covers the main issues facing immigrant families in DC, follows the development of SMART’s youth organizers, rallies in our nation’s capital, youth-led membership meetings, and confrontations with government officials.   Not only does this documentary capture cutting-edge immigrant youth organizing, but will also serve as a model for other cities to implement.

Risks and challenges

After the SMART youth organizers met with Chancellor Henderson to present their solutions for addressing educational inequities, the Washington Post ran an article covering this story and the young immigrants' struggles (wapo.st/QFUxbk). The comments on this article reflect the risks that immigrant youth face on a daily basis -- discrimination, ignorance, and a lack of understanding about the lives of newcomers to the United States. Putting together a documentary as SMART is doing will help confront this ignorance and face the risks of living in a society where discrimination prevails. SMART is qualified to face these challenges through the documentary project because this film has honest, direct testimonies from immigrant youth themselves -- no middle men and no advocates - expressing, from a young person's standpoint - how their own schools can be improved.
