About this project
Thank you to all my backers!!
Thank you very much for backing this film! We have reached the target! I would like to offer an opportunity to all backers to give feedback on the film before the final mix. I'd like to know if you have any questions about the story, any bits you feel are not clear enough, or if you think something could work better... I'd love your opinion so that I can guage the films communication.
There's still time to gather more backers, so if you know of anyone who'd like to add to something like this then please pass on this link.
Atmospheric, beautiful short animated film made in hand-crafted sand animation to inspire the viewer and provide food for thourght.
The Wasteland, based on the Fisher King and Perceval myths. Sometimes we carry an injury for too long, until it becomes so real it rules our life and destroys our world. This film shows the mythical journey of someone who decides to make a change in his life, and put an end to this painful situation.
What needs to be done
I need to complete the sound track, which so far is just a rough mix, I also wish to commission a composer, voice artist and sound mixer to work on the final sound track. There are some shots I'd like to redo too.
I would also like to make a picture book. Although the film stands on its own and doesn't need the book to explain it, the book may expand the film into a wider more rounded project, and inspire the reader on their own journey of interest around the topics explored.
There is a blog with the development of the film, so you can see its progress so far http://wastelandfilm.wordpress.com
Why help fund the film
This film makes a valuable contribution to the world, as it is made using traditional techniques (with a few of the newer ones), it has a slower, more sensitive atmospheric feel and is a uniquely personal expression. I aim to inspire others to make animation without expensive software, in a more physical manor, and to engage more intelligently with the content of their films. It stands as a celebration of independence, individual expression and uniqueness.
I made the film as my final practical project for my MA in Visual Communications at University of Derby, for which I received an Excellent grade and an -A for the Dissertation! (I have to boast!) It also won the University's 'Big Show 2013 Award'.
Risks and challenges
I have not made an illustrated book before, but whilst studying for my MA I did spend some time developing the idea for a book, and discovered some very interesting illustrated books which opened my eyes to the possibilities of how a picture book can work alongside animated film to add value and contrast the two mediums.
I have a successful track record for making animated films, winning the Gold Hugo in 1998, and a few other awards since. My previous films can be found on my website www.instinctmedia.co.ukLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
