Cayla the copycat

Posted by Supertoy Robotics (Creator)

I guess it was inevitable. The time I have taken to bring Supertoy to market. There is a copycat called Cayla only currently for sale in the UK as they are obviously scared to release it elsewhere, we in the UK are the guinea pigs for this monstrosity. Where do I start? OK its a nice looking well made doll but for $100 (approx £60 what do you expect). There is no robotics. I could buy 3 Barbie dolls for this price. Its criminal they are selling this to children 4+, I have always made it clear (see the Kickstarter page) that Google voice recognition significantly drops in performance for children under 8 years. It uses two-way Bluetooth, which makes matters a lot worse. You see I tested this solution (I am still in talks with manufacturers) but to date if you use two way Bluetooth then voice from the microphone drops in quality to the phone and then the Google voice recognition has even a harder time picking it up. It also only runs on batteries, clearly save the planet is not on these guys agenda. I think a child will run through batteries in a day. It makes we wonder if this is deliberate. They know they have a failed speech recognition toy, so if they make it only battery operated, how many parents will replace the batteries everyday? The manufacture is just hoping the child likes the toy so no matter the fact the parent paid $100 then by guilt they keep it. It claims to be conversational! What a joke. I have more conversation with Siri on the iPhone. Seriously, when it works (which is hit and miss) even for an adult it can only do basic Q&A, and I mean basic. Did you know the toy industry is unregulated. Which means people like this can say what the hell they like and get away with it. How many parents I wonder will be taken in and think their little princess can speak (let alone) have a conversation with the toy. Its all just very clever marketing to make a quick buck. Don't buy this toy. Try is out at the toy store. The app also will not work unless you buy the toy. A catch if you ever hear one. At least our Beta App is up on Google store for all to try. Overall this toy is a poor copycat of my invention. It uses my ideas as a gimmick to sell the toy. Trust me these guys are going to make millions of dollars duping parents. So what if they get 50% return they still make millions. Its a flash in the pan, ride on someone else's invention (mine), and do a poor job. But who cares. If the Kickstarters who criticised me put 1/10th their energy to seeing the crap competition out there then maybe my life would be a little better. I will deliver a quality product. Sorry its taken so long, but its against my moral principles to be a crook and flog something so sub par but then again I am sure drug dealers outside schools don't care about kids neither do these guys. They have an interesting dual face. Manley is their Hong Kong official name but its run by these guys. www.toyquest.com info@toyquest.com Distributed in the UK by these guys. vividtoysandgames.co.uk jonny.henton@vividimag.co.uk Sadly sold by a UK top toy store Hamleys, :( privacy@hamleys.co.uk (clearly they did not test it on kids you think you would trust these people?)

This is not a spam post; Ashley, please pay attention.

In supporting a different crown funding endeavor, I have been AMAZED by the professional communications, the update photos, and the honesty provided by the Canary product folks.

They are producing something which competitors will likely try to replicate. But in communicating with their backers (which I'm one of), they have been fantastic in their level of detail during communications.

Take a page from their example, Ashley.

Start showing us the bears we've funded.
Start communicating honestly and clearly with us, your backers.
Start answering questions that your backers have asked.

      Thank you.

Can't be a copy or copycat as you Put it as you have not sent nor delivered anything. They would say same about you. At least they have a product!

@Salty, he is like most people, he wants to feel good about himself. The only problem is that for him to feel good about himself, he makes us feel like shit. The thing that makes us feel good is that karma will eventually catch up with him.

Ashley. Get your finger out and send the bears or explain what the hold up is. Please stop stalling with updates that are unrelated to the completion of this project. Please tell us :

      1. Are the bears complete and ready to ship
      2. When will they be shipped
      3. When will the costumes be ready ?

How dare you criticise someone for doing a bad job when your project is in the state it is? Send us the fracking bears. There is nothing holding them back now except the fact that they don't exist, or you've spent all the money and can't afford to ship them.

Also, how dare you talk about trustworthiness of others? You've proven yourself to be a liar time and time again, and all evidence points to you being nothing but a thief / con artist.

I'm going to play copycat to Jarl's VERY valid post below...

      From Jarl:
Ashley, as long as you don't answer people's question, they will not care about copycats

tell us when we'll get our bears
tell us what happened to the outfits

      make us start caring again

    19. Dan Panetta on

Where are we at with the bears? Are we at a point where there is software on the bear and updates can be applied via USB or Bluetooth? If so I think having a tangible product In our hands would be a step in the right direction. You could still develop the software like any developer and provide updates. I would send a survey out to see who wants their bear shipped at its current state as long as that state is ready for software/firmware updates at the user level.

    20. Mark McInnes on

In your update you talk about the quality of two way Bluetooth and how you are still in talks with the manufacturers. Does this mean the bears haven't been made and or shipped yet?

You should ask Supertoy why the world moves on.

    26. Jeffery Craddock on

Take the opportunity to learn from their launch.. A) the doll is creepy-looking (is she speaking through an emphysema box on her throat? B) Obviously, the batteries flaw. C) The age limit. D) The ability to limit how 'chatty' she is. E) Avoiding ever saying certain 'words', etc.. Honestly; I can't really feel sympathy to the 'copycat' remark you've made (which would require a product to 'copy' and/or patents to protect).. At this point, take what's good and avoid what's bad and make your product the better for it.

But the question is, Ashley, can they deliver in time ⌚?

    28. Alex Johnson on

You guys better stop complaining or Ashley will call you a troll and threaten to not send you your bear.

    29. Emma Bergh-Apton on

Come on Ashley - this is getting really tedious. Instead of sending tons of emails and other (weird) stuff - why not concentrate on getting our bears finished and on the way to us? You really can't blame everyone for being fed up after an eight-month delay and blame being levelled at everyone you're involved with. Sure, I don't doubt you've had some bad luck, but your sponsors' isn't great either. Right now we've trusted so much that we've put our money where our mouths are - and seen nothing except 'reasons' why we've received no Super Ted.

      Hey, so what?

At least THEY have MADE and RELEASED a toy! Where is the bear, that was supposed to be on a boat, then a plane?

Sounds like you are a bit envious of this new toy? That they will be making millions while you mourn squandering the £60K that you were given here on hookers and whisky?

Get over yourself and release the damn bear, or admit you cant and we have lost their money in your failed venture. Who cares if the bear isnt as good as the one in your mind? At least this is in the market place....

Maybe we should all send Ashley photos of the children they disappointed since all we get are pointless emails some having nothing to do with the bear whatsoever. How can you be so bold to still send updates. Ridiculous. You should be ashamed.

    40. nicole niblet on

ok let me get this right they are afraid to release theirs elsewhere yet they copied you but there is released and your backers are still waiting is that right? Up til this point I've been patient and very kind, now im with the rest, convinced that you have stolen my money and caused me to disappoint my child, which is a definate no no, I would like a refund immediately so maybe this year I can get my child a real gift versus the illusion you created for him last year. What a waste of time. Taking advantage of innocent people. I am a single parent, hard enough making ends meet without people like you preying on our misfortunes. Terrible.
