Because it's great to make things
The GAMEIN5D board system started because my children wanted great, big game boards to battle on. But we only have a small house so the aim became to be able to build really cool gaming areas without permanently taking up all the space in our home.
Now the idea has grown a bit and I hope the system is something that will help tabletop gamers, model makers and board game designers to build bigger and better models and gaming surfaces than ever before because it addresses the one limiting factor that stops us all - space.
GAMEIN5D in action
My North African themed board uses 4 small (18cm) boxes to build a wargame board that is 72x108cm but you can fold it up and carry it around in a shopping bag.
Here's the same board all folded out and ready to go...
GAMEIN5D allows you to design games in 3D with considerable vertical relief that fold up perfectly into small, stackable, storable boxes. The inside of the box is safe from damage and dust and is easy to transport. When you're not using them they are easy to store and fit easily on a shelf, or under a bed, or where ever you want.
The boards are modular, they all snap together with magnetic latches. Boards can be combined in a variety of ways to produce a wide variety of game boards.
GAMEIN5D is infinitely expandable, combine as many as you like to make a whole world to build on, or play on, or both.
A lot of people have been asking about how different boards can be combined. It's impossible to compile a complete list because of the infinite number of combinations available but the diagram below is an attempt to show how some common arrangements can be made. I should also add that it seems likely I will offer boards based on 1 foot boxes so all the dimensions in the diagram below (6x4, etc.) can be viewed directly as 6'x4', etc. Thanks to Pascal Groux who suggested the 7x5 arrangement.
What am I trying to do?
So ... the aim of the project is simple, get GAMEIN5D out there and get others creating with it. Any funds raised will go towards further developing the GAMEIN5D project and supporting future production.
The pledges are simple and to start with I'm sticking to boards based on a 26cm cube.
- You can go for the A-style as one-box board.
- Or choose 2 A-style boxes for twice the area.
- Or you can choose the W-style a two-box board.
The A- and W-styles have slightly different ways of joining together and I really don't know which people might prefer. I've put some pictures of the actual rewards below. The boxes are 26cm on a side.
If you've got to the end of this ... thanks for your time. I really hope you like the project and want to support us, we've had a lot of fun with it so far.
Risks and challenges
This is my first kickstarter project and I feel a real responsibility to get it right. The GAMEIN5D boards have been in development for over a year and the design works really well. I've used the boards several times already to create some dioramas and war gaming surfaces. I've posted the results on my website. As war gaming surfaces they've been pretty extensively play-tested by my children - they haven't been able to break them. The product itself is simple to manufacture and the components are readily available.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
