Notes on a Case of Melancholia, Or: A Little Death
$101,591

This is book about Death's despair regarding his kid- an affectionate "Little Death" who simply doesn't have what it takes to carry on the family business.

Dr. Edgar O. Wye is a psychoanalyst who takes Death on as a patient. The book's rhyming narration will be taken from his case notes.

The book will run about 42-50 pages long, and will be completely illustrated. Graphic novel "frames" will be used on occasion, but this will really be more of a picture book - deliberately similar to the short books of Edward Gorey, but with a character-driven plot. Though it has a pretty high body count, it is in essence a family story.

The book's illustrations are etched -to give the story a gothic atmosphere appropriate to its subject matter.

Risks and challenges
This book is not directed toward a specific demographic. Like certain works by Maurice Sendak and Shel Silverstein, it just is what it is. This will make marketing the [graphic novel/children's story/picture book] difficult. Fortunately, you're a potential Kickstarter patron, and we don't have to deal with any of that stuff.
The etching process is more straining to my hand than pen and ink. To complete of the book, I will implement a regiment of stretching and exercise to maintain keep strain at bay.
Production and delivery of Kickstarter materials can be a headache, but I've been lucky enough to George Rohac and Breadpig on my team. They're pretty much a Kickstarter Swat team.
Scheduling: Fortunately, I'm very excited about this book, and am eager to work on it. I have some free time this year, and plan to have the book ready for deliver in July 2015.
