When an eccentric naturalist peers into a magnifying glass to get a closer look at an ordinary flower near his doorstep, he is magically drawn into the microscopic world he observes! Amongst flowers as tall as pines, his curiosity gets the best of him and he gets thoroughly lost.
He knows he needs to find his way home but can't help rambling deeper into this remarkable landscape. Will our intrepid explorer make it out unscathed in this mysterious landscape? He knows not friend from foe.
This is my first project combining image and text. I've made a couple of print series of similar photographic explorations before, and now I've set my sights on expanding into interactive storytelling (with a comic strip-like twist) to be created and told over a year (releasing one image per month for twelve months).
I've covered the production costs of eight initial images from the world of Kooyah, the extra-ordinary land in which our traveler is lost, as well as made a temporary website to relay the project so far and give you a sense of what the art is all about.
Along with making 12 new images, I want to develop a comic stripe-like interactive gallery where people can see the naturalist at different 'hot spots' in the landscapes and click on him to reveal text balloons sharing his experiences in each image.
Get a sense of what the images will be like in the image journal. You'll see flowers that would dwarf any human and colors so vibrant you might think there was a fire in the depths of a blossom!
For my kickstarter project, I'm looking to build a community around the adventures of this traveler. More than just a series of photographic print studies, or a fun story, I want to turn it into a photographic exploration of the many 'gems out there' from Nature's vast palette of elements, in the hopes of sharing a different way of seeing. With your support, you help make these explorations happen, new landscapes and the story come to be. As a reward you get unique prints and a thank you postcard. Also, you'll be able to follow the story over the months to come as new images get created and posted on the interactive journal.
Where will your pledge dollars go?
1) I want to use the kickstarter funds to produce 12 more landscapes continuing the visual narrative from the misty depths of Kooyah's flower jungle. Your support will help cover travel costs to places I need to go to take new photographs of natural elements so these journal entries can be created.
2) A website needs to be developed (which can get expensive) so that you'll be able to follow the story online for the months to come. Funds will cover labor costs of the web designer, web hosting and CMS platform fees over the course of a year.
3) What's left over will help cover printing costs for ink and fine art photography paper.
So, if you back this project at any of the pledge levels you see to the right, you'll get any one of the initial prints I've produced (or more) from the The Journal Gallery on my website… Check it out!
Adam lives in Portland, Maine. He exhibits his photographs at local coffee shops, restaurants, galleries and on the street sometimes, too. He has been working on developing his artwork over the last several years. He's had a fascination with the natural world and storytelling since he was a kid. So, it's been his mission to learn how to bring these two things together.
Adam wants to share his work with you. Thanks for your support!
