GameStow is a free Windows app/service for automatically syncing your PC game saves across multiple computers.
Why are we building this?
I’m sure many of us have lost progress in games at one point or another. Blame faulty memory cards, wonky hard drives, viruses, or just forgetfulness. The bottom line is that losing progress sucks. On top of that, if you want to play a game across multiple computers, you'll most likely have to swap files back and forth to maintain any progress that you make.
Of course, this annoying game save shuffle doesn't happen for all games. Steam Cloud is a wonderful invention that syncs progress and game saves via the Steam client. However, a vast number of Steam games lack Steam Cloud support. Also, we don't believe that one should be locked into a particular platform to enjoy the conveniences that Steam Cloud offers.
And that's where GameStow comes in. We're developing an elegant solution to these problems that have been plaguing PC gamers for years.
How it works
Once you create an account and install the app, you just specify which PC games you want to keep synced with the cloud and GameStow takes care of the rest. Whenever you make progress in a game, it detects the changed files on your hard drive and automatically uploads them to our cloud servers which use Amazon S3 (a well known and reliable online storage solution). The changed files then automatically get synced to any computers that are out of date. GameStow uses a database of known save file locations for each game so you never have to hunt for the files yourself. Additionally, you can access your game save files from the website at anytime so you never have to worry about losing game progress again.
GameStow currently works with 75 games, both old and new, with support rapidly growing! We've supported many games from the Humble Bundle indie packs and also major titles like Skyrim and Mass Effect. Check out our list of currently supported games: http://www.gamestow.com/games
Why we need your help
We've been working on this project for the last few months. Internal testing has gone well and now it's time to show it off to the public to get some feedback.
Anyone that pledges $1 or more is guaranteed access to the beta and will have the opportunity to shape the direction of the project. The money will go towards maintaining our servers and will allow us to focus on additional improvements. Ideally the beta should run for at least 3 months. The more money we receive, the more beta testers we can support, and the longer we can run the beta. So if you think this idea has any value to you or the PC gaming community please support GameStow. On Kickstarter it's all or nothing. Your pledge money only goes to us if we reach our pledge goal, so every dollar really does count!
Don't have a dollar to spare? That's ok! You can still show your support by spreading the word and signing up for the beta on the website.
The ultimate goal is to offer this service for free with options to pay for some neat premium features. The free tier of service will give you a certain number of game save slots on the cloud. A game save slot is a section of cloud storage for one of your games. For example, if you want to save Skyrim and Super Meat Boy on the cloud, that would take up 2 game save slots. If you ever want to free up one of your slots, you can always remove any game's save files from the cloud and use the slot for another game. For the beta test, we'll initially give everyone 20 game save slots but that number could change as we gather more data and feedback.
Some ideas that we have for premium features are: unlimited game save slots, public download links to your game saves (so you can share them with friends), and ability to sync other data on the cloud such as replays, screenshots, and hardware profiles. Some of the higher level pledge rewards include these perks so be sure to check them out!
