About

I founded Clean Strands™ because I want a quick and easy way to ensure that the materials my kids use to print 3D objects are safe for their health and for the environment.

Very little research has been done on emissions from 3D printing filament, and most filament manufacturers have their own proprietary formulations, which prevents us from knowing exactly what's inside. 

When I set out to research 3D printing filament, I found some information on melting points and filament strength, as well as a few bloggers questioning the health and environmental effects of PLA and ABS filament. But for the most part, everyone just said, “More research needs to be done.”

The goal of Clean Strands™ is to fill the gap in our knowledge about emissions from 3D printing filament. 

WHO?

Clean Strands™ plans to work with the Built Environment Research Group (BERG) at Illinois Institute of Technology, the only research lab that has published an extensive study on indoor air quality and 3D printing: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1352231013005086 

WHAT?

  • We're planning to test the ultrafine particles (UFPs) and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) from multiple 3D printing filaments at various temperatures
  • However, TVOCs only provide us with a total; they don't give us an answer about "which chemicals" are being emitted
  • So, we're also planning to test for the presence of specific chemicals, and the concentrations of those chemicals. Currently, the two chemicals being considered for testing are: styrene and hydrogen cyanide

WHEN?

  • September 2015: Filament Selection 
  • September - October 2015: Filament Testing

WHERE?

  • The Built Environment Group (BERG) at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago has dedicated lab space for emissions testing of 3D printing filaments

WHY? 

  • Because it hasn't been done yet...
  • and because it's NOT easy to do.

HOW?

We plan to select up to 75 filaments by:

  • First, identifying the most popular 3D printers that use FDM (fused deposition modeling) AND sell for a cost of under USD$3,000.00 
  • Then, we'll create a list of all filaments (PLA, ABS, Nylon, Composites including wood, brick and carbon, etc..) that can be used with the above listed 3D printers 
  • Finally, we'll ask YOU (our backers!) to help us narrow our master list down to the top 75 filaments for testing (see: Pledge $50 or more- CAST YOUR VOTE!) 

We plan to identify control factors that will affect our testing environment by:

  • Reaching out to the 3D printing community for input- your collective 3D printing experience will help us identify the most important issues to consider when setting up the testing environment
  • We're already discussing- which 3D printer to use for testing; what object to 3D print; variations in humidity; variations in temperature...your input is needed!

The Clean Strands™ Emissions Report, detailing test results from 3D printing filament emissions testing, will be: 

  • Issued annually, beginning with a 2015 Edition *(You can be one of the first to receive this premier 2015 Edition, See: Pledge $100 or more- SNEAK PEEK!)
  • Made available to the public, via press releases, articles, blogs and social media. 
  • Offered free of charge, with the goal of raising awareness, encouraging further research, and promoting dialogue about 3D printing and consumer safety! 

In order to set a standard, first we need to gather research on safe indoor air quality. Clean Strands™ has partnered with Ramboll ENVIRON, a global environmental consultancy, specializing in air emissions: http://www.ramboll-environ.com/services/air-quality-management

The team at Ramboll ENVIRON, led by Principal Joseph W. Hower, PE, DEE, will help us evaluate which chemicals, in addition to which concentrations of those chemicals, could be hazardous to our health and to the environment. We'll use this research to create a set of standards for safe indoor air quality when 3D printing in homes and schools.

By issuing a Clean Strands™ Seal of Approval, we plan to give special recognition to those manufacturers who meet our standards for safe indoor air quality when 3D printing in homes and schools.

The Clean Strands™ 2015 Emissions Report will serve as our resource for determining which filaments will be awarded a 2015 Clean Strands™ Seal of Approval

Unlike other 3rd party certifiers who solicit companies to submit products for testing and offer certification for a fee, no fee will be charged to filament manufacturers for either the 2015 testing or receipt of a 2015 Clean Strands™ Seal of Approval.

More funding means more testing! When we've reached our funding goal of $50,000, we'll post a STRETCH GOAL to test up to 100 3D printing filaments, and we'll add in testing for additional specific chemicals too!

Risks and challenges

Our biggest risk is that it might be too early in the evolution of 3D printing for a consumer Seal of Approval. Even if a tested filament qualifies for a Clean Strands™ Seal of Approval, it's up to the manufacturer whether or not they want to display the Clean Strands™ Seal on boxes and packaging of filament.

To minimize this risk, we plan to:

1. Create a set of standards that are clearly defined and easy to understand. Our partner, Ramboll ENVIRON, is a global leader in air quality and emissions research. With offices across the globe, and employing many of the brightest minds in the industry, Ramboll ENVIRON's knowledge and expertise will be a huge asset in helping Clean Strands create a set of standards for the Seal of Approval.

2. Perform laboratory tests that are clearly defined and well documented. Illinois Institute of Technology's BERG lab is the only research lab in the country that has previously conducted and published a study on emissions from 3D printing filament. BERG's expertise in this field adds great value to Clean Strands.

3. Communicate results- It all comes down to great communication. Clean Strands' Founder, Rachel Spieczny, is not only a PMP certified project manager, but she also helped Zeepro, a 3D printing startup, raise $348,000 on Kickstarter in 2013. Utilizing her 15+ years of media and emerging technology experience, Rachel will ensure that Clean Strands' gets the word out and keeps the dialog going.
