Modular City Tiles

I've wanted to create modular city tiles for quite a long time, in fact I wanted them so bad I bought a laser so I could make it happen!  I have created a system that produces great results with just glue, spray paint, and stencils.  Have a look through the project and let me know if you have any questions!

This is a Modelling Project!

All rewards will be delivered as flat-packed MDF that will need to be assembled and painted by the backers!   It's a blast to do and I will supply a link to instructions with the rewards.

The Tiles

Each tile is 300mm x 300mm or roughly 1ft x 1ft.  There are seven possible tiles to choose from, 3 straight varieties, 2 intersections, a curve, and a blank.  With these few choices, you can make an almost infinite number of layouts.  The roads have been placed on the tiles so you can easily match them up, no complicated arrangements are needed.

In addition to the tiles, each backer will receive all the necessary stencils to produce the tiles they choose as a reward!

Each tile with a road section on it has a sidewalk on both sides of the road.  You can see close up pictures of the tiles here.  All of the tiles have been painted with my simple system that you can see in the video further down.

The tiles can be 'pinned' together with small connectors that work under the tile to hold them in place, though if you have a cloth of some sort underneath them, this likely will not be necessary.  The tiles are mounted on a 1cm frame underneath to prevent warping and allow for the 'pinning' of tiles.

Tile Options
Tile Options

Here are just a few 16 tiles layouts that I've put together to show you how they display.

That's just the beginning, once you start to add in buildings, they look great. The buildings are NOT included in this Kickstarter.

So Simple, but So Good

I personally want great looking terrain, but don't have great amounts of time to put into painting and preparing it, so with a few stencils I've managed to do it with good old spray paint only. I've put together this video of me creating the tiles used above.

 The Connectors

The Fences

Along with the tiles, I'll be making fences and guard towers for all of your secret base, zombie containment, or prison raid scenarios.  The fences are a combination of an MDF base structure with wire mesh fencing and wide gauge wire for the barbed wire at the top. I've also worked out a nice working gate for the fence too.

The Fence-Wrench

I came up with the little guy while putting the fences together.  I found that they didn't always line up after I had glued them, so this jig helps to insure that all of the fences should line up once constructed.  It is included with any pledge that includes a set of fences.

The Guardhouses

What's a secret base, zombie containment facility, or prison without a decent guardhouse?  These guardhouses are built with removable tops so you can place figures inside or just see those on the walkway more easily.

Add these to any pledge for $14 a piece.

And here they are in action!

Why Kickstarter?

I've purchased the laser already and that's a huge expense.  The other thing needed to pull off this project is a huge amount of MDF to make the tiles and fences out of.  In order to make this project happen at a reasonable price, I need to buy a lot of it to keep the price down.  By running a Kickstarter and pooling our resources, we can make that happen.

Many people try to pay for everything project related expense with Kicktarter funds and end up coming up short.  I have a different outlook and invest a significant amount of my money first and then come to Kickstarter to gather the remaining funds.

Addon Summation

  • Fence sets $30
  • Guardhouse $14
  • Additional Road tiles $10

A Few Words on Shipping

MDF is heavy. There is just no way of getting around it.  This is not a problem in the USA as we have these great Large Flat Rate Boxes that I've designed everything to fit into nicely.  Many Kickstarters get into trouble by promising things to good too be true, I'm trying to keep mine a great value with realistic goals.

For the rest of the world, shipping is just plain expensive.  I imagine this project to be mostly a US project as a result.  Foreign backers will notice a very steep cost for international shipping just because it is a very expensive prospect.  I know that many projects promise free or very cheap shipping to backers, but this is something I just can't do, international shipping prices aren’t something I can affect.

I have priced the shipping at the cost of a large box and I can fit quite a bit into a large box, but if the addons ordered require more boxes, I'll fit them in the most economical packaging and send a PayPal invoice for the difference.  I have made every effort to ensure that the original shipping charge is adequate. I can fit around 27 'objects' maximum in a large box, an object being a tile, a guardhouse, or a set of fences.

The Final Word

I've run a number of Kickstarters so far.  Each time I have coordinated many different artists and artisans to deliver a quality product to the backers, and we've been less than a week late or early every time.  This time around, I will truly be a one-man-band and can guarantee everything will happen on time.  I'm only opening up a small number of pledges each month so I can guarantee they will arrive on time (or early).  I've got a lot of experience with the Kickstarter System and in making hobby products, so you can back this project with confidence knowing you will get your rewards on time!

I'm going to start with 10 rewards of each type per month to make sure that fulfillment happens on time.  I will order the wood the day we fund, I will begin cutting the rewards the day the Kickstarter ends and will begin shipping when the money clears.

If you are looking for a Kickstarter that promises a constant stream of free things and asks you to spend more and more, this isn't your Kickstarter.  If you are looking for a solid deal, delivered on-time by a consistently high performing creator, this might be the Kickstarter for you.

Risks and challenges

Every project has some element of risk. I have done everything in my power to minimize this risk, and I've used what I have learned the last five times to reduce that even further. During my first two projects I experienced an average delay of four days and my third, fourth, and fifth projects were completed early!

So what you've got now is an experienced person who has produced miniatures through a Kickstarter project five times before, ready to do the same with MDF terrain. I have a lot of happy backers and I can't wait to make more people happy this time.

In order to make this happen, I'm only opening up a few fulfillment slots for every month. When May is full and I've decided I can't produce any more that month, I'll open up June, and so on. I'm planning to ensure that everyone gets their reward when they should.

The only factor that would slow down reward shipping is a disastrous health issue or accident for myself or someone in my family. Let's hope that doesn't happen!
