About this project
Breaking the Cycle is a series of fictional poems and short stories derived from true accounts of tragedy, loss and pain combined with stories of finding inner strength and conquering adversity in order to completely break the cycle of poverty. It is my hope that by sharing these stories it will give perspective to individuals who do not understand the plight of people growing up in impoverished communities and will give a constructive voice to those who identify with the topics but need an outlet to express their story. Breaking the Cycle graphically addresses issues of abuse, substance abuse, heart break, death and conversely love, hope, strength, spiritual and emotional growth. I believe that all stories will make a strong impact on the intended adult audience.
The Creative works of “Breaking the Cycle” are all derived from true stories that I have either lived, witnessed, or stories that were passed on to me from family members. I worked hard to create a level of anonymity as my intentions are not to embarrass or ostracize anyone, but to tell a series of very powerful stories that could give a genuine voice to the events displayed.
This is my first time publishing; it has always been a goal of mine and now seems to be the appropriate time to start this venture. It is my goal to publish multiple creative pieces throughout my lifetime.
“Breaking the Cycle” was not written as a money making venture, but what I hope to do is use it as a cultural and educational resource. Funds generated from this Kickstarter campaign will be used as seed money to implement programs in New Orleans and surrounding areas that will affect both high school, college aged students and adults interested in the arts. This project has been a form of therapy for me, and I hope to channel that in others who are in need of the creative therapy or those who may work with populations of individuals who these stories speak to. The programs include but are not limited to: the “Breaking the Cycle” Youth Solidarity Jazz Brunch and the “Breaking the Cycle” Youth Leadership Academy.
The target audience for my book is adults 18 and up, seeing as there is some tastefully strong language in some of my pieces. My intent is to educate and draw out strong emotion in all who pick up my stories. I seek to stand as a voice to those who cannot constructively speak their feelings and to give perspective and knowledge to those who may not have directly experience these issues.
