Undercover was a band that constantly evolved: from punk to goth and hard rock, to the burgeoning alternative sound of the 1990s. Lyrically, the band matured right before their fans’ eyes and ears, moving from the simple and straightforward to wordplay that was filled with subtext, passion, and self-examination.
The roar of that evolution exploded from speakers when Devotion, the band’s sixth full-length studio album was released in 1992. Who could forget the thunderous tremor of “Work It Out,” with Gary Dean Olson’s crushing drums leading in Gym Nicholson’s guitar, Ojo Taylor’s bass, and the commanding vocals of Sim Wilson? Who would not be moved by the closing, elegiac arena-rocker “So Wonderful,” as each band member slips into formation, one by one, to send a farewell on to a loved one? Devotion works on multiple levels because, at its core, it is one of the finest rock albums of its era. (DW Dunphy)
Like so many releases of the time, Devotion was never released on vinyl…until now. Lo-Fidelity Records is proud to announce that Undercover’s master thesis Devotion will finally be released on remastered 180g 2-LP vinyl, deluxe CD, and download, but we need your help to get there.
Let's do this.
You have questions. Hopefully we have answers....
Is the band involved? ~ Yes. Undercover has lent their support/advice for the project, and they will be approving the remaster and any bonus tracks we include before any CD's or Vinyl are manufactured.
Are you selling downloads? ~ Yes. Plus, each Vinyl purchase will also include a download of the album. ALL downloads will include bonus material, (assuming the band approves of what is found to possibly include.) When everything ships, buyers will receive a download message via Kickstarter where users can download the remastered album in mp3 320, FLAC, WAV, or ALAC (Apple Lossless) files, and each download will contain PDF files of the album art/cover.
How many vinyl variations are you selling? ~ We're offering a total of 3 color variants, Black, Transparent Highlighter Yellow, and Splatter (highlighter yellow, red and black), each limited to 100 copies pressed. Since they aren't pressed yet, we can't offer exact photo descriptions, but you can visit our manufacturer and see the color options and pressing configurations we choose from, and use your imagination from there.
What kind/size of T-Shirts are being used in the campaign? ~ For this campaign, our manufacturer will use BLACK pre-shrunk, 100% cotton, heavyweight Fruit Of The Loom shirts in mens sizes Small through 5XL. We will also produce the design on "Ladies Cut" t-shirts in sizes X-Small through 2XL.
What will the T-Shirt design look like? ~ The t-shirt will be created by tattoo & woodcut artist Bryn Perrott as a commission for Lo-Fidelity Records. (She will only begin work if the campaign is fully funded.) The shirt will be black, and the design white. The design will feature a Sacred Heart motif. The actual master woodcut will also be part of the "Fully Devoted" level, and will be a one-of-a-kind piece. You can view several of her woodcut designs here to give you an idea of what her art and the shirt design style will look like:
You are only making 300 CDs. Will they be replicated or (burned) CDRs ~ They will all be replicated CDs....NOT CDR's.
Are there any bonus tracks? ~ The hope/goal is YES. The band is searching their archives and we are hunting for any live material from the era. If you have something you'd like to contribute for possible inclusion, please contact us at email@example.com and let us know what you have.
Why are you doing this with Kickstarter? Why not just reissue the albums "normally"? ~ We get it. Not everyone likes the idea and practice of Kickstarter. But as a small indie label, we also don't like the idea of amassing large amounts of debt on releases we're not totally sure everyone will want. None of what we're attempting here is inexpensive. From licensing, graphic design, remastering/vinyl mastering, and manufacturing t-shirts, vinyl and CD...it all costs. So rather than sinking $10,000 or more into a project we're not 100% sure people will want, we're using Kickstarter to let fans speak out through their pledges. Meaning that the only way this happens is if we collectively make the goal. And if we make this goal, we'll reissue Balance Of Power next year.
If we meet the goal, how long will it be before I get my order? ~ Great question. The moment we reach goal (assuming we do), everything will go into production. We'll begin the process of remastering Devotion and re-creating the art...(or as much of the art as possible.) Once the remaster is complete and approved, the audio will be sent to be mastered specifically for vinyl. Once the campaign is over, (and again, assuming it's successful), we'll send everything to manufacturing. Vinyl manufacturing will take anywhere from 4-6 months. So if we were to begin Vinyl manufacturing in early November, the earliest they would begin shipping is March 2018, and the latest May of 2018. Whatever the wait time, we promise it will be worth it.
Let's make this happen....
Risks and challenges
The main "risk" is manufacturing time for the vinyl...and we'll keep everyone updated on project progress as things happen...but otherwise, you fund it, and we'll make it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
