**Update 7/5/13** ~ So this is it, the final stretch...one more day. Everything comes to a close on Saturday at 12PM (central), and as of this message, we are only $108 away from hitting stretch goal #2, which is 30k. When we hit that mark, everyone that has pledged $25 or more will receive a digital album of newly recorded covers, (a minimum of 10 tracks, similar in theme and style to the "Guadalupe" album) to be delivered by November 2013, in addition to everything else currently in your reward tier.
But lets think a little bigger here.
We've had a generous fan come forward with an offer to help get us to 35k. Basically, if we get to 32k by the time this campaign ends on Saturday, this person will donate an additional $3000 to push our final total to 35k. If that happens, we will meet Stretch Goal #3 and each person who has pledged $25 or more will also receive 2 CD set of newly recorded covers, (a minimum of 20 tracks, similar in theme and style to the "Guadalupe" album) to be delivered by November 2013. It will mean that all packages won't ship until November, but in return you'll also receive a newly recorded double CD of music, in addition to everything else in your reward tier.
So as it stands right now, for $25 each pledge will receive the Guadalupe CD, the "Live In Torrance" CD, the "Live In Torrance" DVD, a Michael Roe "Guadalupe" sticker, and assuming we hit 30k, a newly recorded digital album....and if we hit 35k in the end, a newly recorded 2 CD set. All for $25, including shipping. This isn't an offer that will be repeated again!
Thank you again for all the support ~ and lets see just how far we can take this before closing on Saturday!
**Update 6/30/13** ~ Thanks to everyone for getting us this far. In just 3 days, you've pushed our total from a little over 25k to over 26k! I'm amazed and grateful for all the support for my project. With 5 days left, I'm also excited to see just how far we can actually push this, so I'm going to offer a couple extra stretch goals ~
Stretch Goal #2 - If the campaign reaches $30,000 before it ends on July 6th, each person who has pledged $25 or more will also receive a digital download album of newly recorded covers, (a minimum of 10 tracks, similar in theme and style to the "Guadalupe" album) to be delivered by November 2013.
Stretch Goal #3 - If the campaign reaches $35,000 before it ends on July 6th, each person who has pledged $25 or more will also receive 2 CD set of newly recorded covers, (a minimum of 20 tracks, similar in theme and style to the "Guadalupe" album) to be delivered by November 2013. It will mean that all packages won't ship until November, but in return you'll also receive a newly recorded double CD of music, and we all know good things come to those that wait!
So here we go....can we get to 35k by 12pm (central) on July 6th?
**Update 6/27/13** ~ Amazing and thank you! With your help we have pushed past 25k and met our stretch goal #1! Anyone that has or will pledge $25 or more will now receive the "Live In Torrance" DVD as an additional reward. We have 8 days left...how high can we push this? Can we hit 30k in the next 8 days? Please keep spreading the word and lets see how far we can go!
**Update 6/22/13** ~ Thank you to everyone who helped us hit our $16k goal in less than a week and pushed us over $21k in a little less than two. Amazing! Here's a word from Michael Roe on the campaign and what we hope to achieve in the final two weeks of our Kickstarter ~
We've added a new reward to the campaign, as well as a "stretch goal", and have an update on the vinyl version of "Guadalupe"....
The new reward: "Mike Roe's Singing Jukebox".... That's right folks. Ever want to hear Mike sing Henry Mancini's "Moon River", AC/DC's "Back In Black", or an original song of your own creation? Here's your chance. You name the song ~ any song by any band or artist ~ and Mike will record an acoustic version, burn it to a CD, sign it, and send it to you for your very own! (Mike reserves the right to use all recordings for future releases.) **Package also includes everything listed the $100 package.** - $150 (25 available)
Stretch Goal #1 ~ If the campaign reaches $25,000 before it ends in two weeks, each person who has pledged $25 or more will also receive a live DVD of Michael Roe, "Live In Torrance" as an additional reward... (This is a companion piece to the live CD already featured in all of the packages $25 on up.) The DVD comes from a 4 camera shoot that took place during Mike's "Face The Rising Sun" tour in 2009. The DVD only happens if we get to $25k, so please help spread the word!
Vinyl Update ~ We are also pleased to announce that each person who has pledged for the vinyl version of "Guadalupe" will also receive a download card with their record which will allow them to download the album in their choice of MP3 (VO or 320), FLAC, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, or ALAC.
Thank you again for all your support, and let's see how far we can push this!
Here's the story behind the project:
In 2002, I released a quiet, contemplative folk-styled album called Say Your Prayers. In the liner notes, I referred to it as a ‘sketch pad for future developments’ and noted how I often prefer sketches and demos to finished works because of their directness and simplicity. Ever since its release, my fans have expressed more joy and gratitude to me for it than any other album I have ever done. This surprised me, but it also confirmed my new direction as a singer/songwriter/recording artist during this quieter, more reflective time in my life. In conversations with folks who loved the record, I promised them that I was more than anxious to do another one along similar lines soon …..
Fall breaks and back to winter and here I am eleven years later with that promise still unfulfilled. Grappling for answers as to why, I remembered back upon the early months of 2002 and realized that Say Your Prayers came from a time when I was at home in a quiet mood, looking upon my life and surroundings every morning with an attitude of reflection and thankfulness. That peaceful space is in sharp contrast to the whirlwind ups and downs of constant touring I have had to do ever since in order to support myself and my family. I love traveling, meeting fans, playing concerts and getting to watch audiences enjoy themselves, but all of that frenetic activity leaves very little time for self-examination and soul searching, much less writing songs during that process and then recording them. All this not to mention the tremendous expenses incurred while trying to do all of the above by myself. Recently, I became determined to break my relative silence with some beautiful new music, but I needed a plan.
My first idea was to record a ‘fund raiser' album of previously released tunes of mine in the same style as Say Your Prayers. Recently, I asked a bunch of my Facebook fans to share with me what songs of mine had meant something important to them. The response was overwhelming, as were the stories about why certain tunes had an impact. This inspired me to revisit some of them in a quieter, simpler way, much as I had done on Say Your Prayers. As I was casting about for a title for the project, I realized that it had been 13 years since the passing of my beloved friend Gene Eugene. I suddenly waxed nostalgic as I recalled rumors of Gene's unfinished Adam Again album to be titled "Guadalupe" and how it inspired me to write a song with that same name. The lyric is filled with remembrance and longing for my grandfather and all the places we went fishing together, but somehow the song was about Gene as well. Upon rehearing, it reminded me of so much unfinished business we have with others, ourselves and our life’s work -- things we should or could have done but never got around to. This certainly applies to many songs I’ve recorded over the years that I felt I could have represented better or with a different approach. At this point in my life, that usually means simpler, with less clutter and ornamentation.
It was in that spirit that I recorded and now proudly present to you my “Guadalupe", and it foreshadows both in theme and mood the kind of recording project I wish to follow it up with containing all new material. I can’t wait to get back to the kind of space that I created Say Your Prayers in, and am anxious to see where it will lead me this time, particularly lyrically as I have grown up quite a bit since 2002 (although my close friends and family may wish to challenge that opinion!)… I may be creating and recording this project all by myself, but I have to confess that I truly cannot do it alone. This is where you come in …...
Where most music-related Kickstarter campaigns are seeking to raise funds for a yet to be recorded album with the new record as the "reward", I'm going to be doing this a bit differently. Your financial support will be rewarded with my most current unreleased solo project “Guadalupe” described above, complete with packages from the simple to the all-out ridiculous, and in so doing, if we meet our financial goal, it will allow me the time I need to reflect, record, and in the near future deliver an all new solo record to you, the fans (which will not be included as a "reward" for this campaign).
Track listing for "Guadalupe" is as follows ~
U U (new song), Come And Gone, Dig My Heels, Come Down Here, For Crying Out Loud, I Need God, Guadalupe, The Jig Is Up, Hard Times Come Again No More, Ache Beautiful (vinyl version only)
My hope is to not only provide fans with the CD version of Guadalupe, but also a one-time pressing of the album on vinyl, complete with a bonus track not found on the CD. As what has become usual for myself and my parters at Lo-Fidelity Records, we also hope to provide a limited edition live CD recorded in Southern California, posters, stickers, and t-shirts in the upper tier packages.
Track listing for the proposed "Live In Torrance" CD is as follows ~
I'll Remember You Love in My Prayers, Stranger Won't You Change Your Sinful Ways, Jonah In The Wilderness, Sunshine Down, Smokescreen, Roesbud, MT, Jimmy, Come Down Here, Ache Beautiful, If It Be Your Will.
For the "uber-fan", I'm offering packages allowing you to get up close and personal with me. Record a song with me in California, have me play tracks on your recordings, or invite me over to your house and have me cut your grass, paint your fence, and play a private performance for you and your friends. Maybe you need a preacher to fill in one Sunday and then play a concert that evening at your church … I can do it, and look forward to fulfilling all my Kickstarter obligations to the fans who've made it possible for me to do what I do for all these many years ~~
~~ Michael Roe
Risks and challenges
As with all Kickstarter campaigns, the biggest challenge is the prospect of not reaching our financial goal. We are ready to meet our reward obligations, but we need your help to make this happen. Funds raised over and above our goal will be used to help with production on the new record and help to pay bills. As always, we thank you for your support.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
