So let's start with a bit of history... For Lo-Fidelity Records it all started with Adam Again. In 2002, after much negotiation with Mr. Buddy Killen and KMG Records, Lo-Fidelity was granted license to reissue "Ten Songs By Adam Again" for a one time CD pressing. This was a negotiation that began years prior between Jeffrey Kotthoff (Lo-Fidelity Records) and the late (and beloved) Gene Eugene, who honestly thought it wouldn't ever happen. But two years after Gene was gone, it did. And it was both an honor and a dream come true. Adam Again's music meant the world to us. Music that we poured over. Obsessed over. And to be able to bring it back to fans that loved it like us was a thrill. And it still is. And since that time we've had the honor of working with many of Gene's friends and co-conspirators in life and music though album releases and tour booking ~ The 77s, Lost Dogs, The Choir, Michael Roe, Kerosene Halo, Terry Taylor...and the list keeps growing.
Much has happened since 2002 in our little corner of the music world... and the Adam Again catalog now rests in the loving hands of Frontline Records (a division of Meis Music Group). Frontline has focused on making their vast catalog available digitally, and many for the first time. For Lo-Fidelity Records, while we've embraced the world of downloads and streaming, our interest has always been in tangible art. Deluxe packaging, shirts, and other extras that collectors typically want is where we live, and vinyl has long been our desired format for buying/listening to music. A desire that for much of the 90s to mid 2000's was nearly impossible in most cases. But vinyl is back, and with it we'd like to reissue albums that have never been available on the format, while also still offering CDs for those that want them. Where we can (and where they want to) bands/band members will be involved in the reissue process ~ approving remasters, supplying photographs and album art. We want this to be meaningful for all involved. And so to begin these reissues, we're going back to where we started, with Adam Again's classic album "Dig"...
My guess is you have questions. Hopefully we have answers....
Why are you doing this with Kickstarter? Why not just reissue the albums "normally"? ~ We get it. Not everyone likes the idea and practice of Kickstarter. But as a small indie label, we also don't like the idea of amassing large amounts of debt on releases we're not totally sure everyone will want. None of what we're attempting here is inexpensive. From licensing, graphic design, remastering/vinyl mastering, and manufacturing t-shirts, vinyl and CD...it all costs. So rather than sinking $10,000 into a project we're not 100% sure people will want, we're using Kickstarter to let fans speak out through their pledges. Meaning that the only way this happens is if we collectively make the goal. And if we make this goal, we'll reissue something else through another Kickstarter in a couple months. We have a long list of possible releases worked out with Frontline, so if this succeeds, it could be very cool for fans of late 80's to mid 90's alternative music for the next couple years.
Is the band involved? ~ Yes. Both Riki Michele and Greg Lawless have lent their support for the project, and they will be approving the remaster before any CD's or Vinyl are manufactured. Greg has also sent archival photos to aid in us re-creating some of the original art from the albums.
Are you selling downloads? ~ No. Our licensing agreement with Frontline only allows for CD and Vinyl. However, they have graciously allowed that with each Vinyl purchase, buyers will receive a download card where users can download the remastered album in 320kbps mp3s, VBR mp3s, AAC, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, or ALAC files, and each download will contain downloadable PDF files of the album art/cover.
What kind/size of T-Shirts are being used in the campaign? ~ For this campaign, our manufacturer will use pre-shrunk, 100% cotton, heavyweight Gildan shirts in mens sizes Small through 5XL. We will also produce the design on "Ladies Cut" t-shirts in sizes X-Small through 2XL.
Will everything in the Kickstarter be available for sale online online once the campaign is over? ~ No. The WHITE, TRANSPARENT "DEEP PURPLE", and HEAVY SPLATTER color variations of the vinyl and the "Dig" T-Shirts are exclusive to the Kickstarter.
You are only making 300 CDs. Will they be replicated or (burned) CDRs ~ They will all be replicated CDs....NOT CDR's.
Are there any bonus tracks? ~ No. As much as we love bonus material, there won't be any included in this project, and for good reason. Greg Lawless had the final word on the idea of adding in the bonus track "Sleepwalk" (already available on "Worldwide Favorites".) ~ "A lot of time and consideration went into the content and running order of Dig. We always saw Dig as having a Side 1 (Deep through Songwork) and a Side 2 (Worldwide through So Long). After all these years I still feel like we got it right. Sleepwalk was a B-Side that worked fine on Worldwide Favorites; I can't imagine anything being altered, added to or taken away from Dig."
If we meet the goal, how long will it be before I get my order? ~ Great question. The moment we reach goal (assuming we do), everything will go into production. We'll begin the process of remastering "Dig" and re-creating the art...(or as much of the art as possible.) Once the remaster is complete and approved, the audio will be sent to be mastered specifically for vinyl. Once the campaign is over, (and again, assuming it's successful), we'll send everything to manufacturing. If all you are pledging for is a CD or T-Shirt, it's possible that you will get them in time for Christmas. If you are ordering any package containing Vinyl, manufacturing will take anywhere from 4-6 months. So if we were to begin Vinyl manufacturing in October, the earliest they would begin shipping is February 2016, and the latest April of 2016. Whatever the wait time, we promise it will be worth it.
Let's make this happen....
Risks and challenges
The main "risk" is manufacturing time for the vinyl...and we'll keep everyone updated on project progress as things happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
