The focus of this campaign is to document my recent work in a limited edition artists book of 100 copies. There is a great tradition and history of artists books. They are a way of referencing a body of work as well as sharing the knowledge gained to both to artists and collectors.
In a wider context I'm at a stage in my career where I would like to focus on more specific and extended projects. It's crucial I make this project work as I see it as a template to take me forward over the next phase of my development as an artist.
I only ever work for my own enjoyment. Although it's great to see that the response this work has solicited on social media and from direct exposure to the public has been extremely positive. The 6 original paintings that Ii have exhibited so far have all sold at both the Works On Paper Fair in February in kensington and the The April edition of The Other Art Fair in Bloomsbury.
This book will be produced to the highest standards possible. It will be hard backed with it's own hard backed case. Beautiful to look at touch and hold. It will be 48 pages broadly consisting of 40 of my finished 2017 colour contrast paintings as well as some illustrations on colour theory. I plan to do this with the bare minimum of text. It will be self explanatory on a visual level, a feast for the eyes and mind.
The work is being photographed at the end of June by Britain's leading Fine art photographer John Bodkin. It will be printed using an Indigo 1,000 press for the colour perfection required and printed on Mohawk Superfine Ultrawhite Eggshell 216 gsm. I am in discussions with a number of book binders. I'm looking for someone with imagination and flair (I think I've found her). I would like to add a personalised element possibly in the form of an original piece of work to be included within each book. I'm working on this idea and should you back the book I'll direct you to a webpage with options to choose from. So the books really must be viewed as a unique work of art in themselves.
For many years I’ve painted by using only the primary colours, this is why my work has such a distinctive palette. In January I began to breakdown and reassemble my understanding and use of colour with a view to developing it to impact on a more subconscious level. Colour and the way we perceive it is a science in it’s self and gas been has been a source of study for artists over generations.
To simplify it I initially studied the various combinations that a simple 12 point colour wheel can create. I worked using collage and developed my own techniques involving squares and then cubes as my central motif. There are so many variables involved with this work that I decided to keep the cube as my form so at least I had one constant aspect.
This is the second crowd funding venture I have embarked on. The first in 2014 was my 64 page retrospective book where I overfunded a £15,000 target to print the now nearly sold out 1,000 copies
Budget Break Down
I have set an achievable goal of £6,500. Taking the Kick Starter comision into account this broadly equates to £1,500 for the photography. £1,000 for the video, campaign photography and book layout. Another £1,750 to print the book, the limited edition prints and deliver the rewards. Finally the remaining £1,750 to produce the first 25 finished books as well as a small contingency.
So it would be great to get this going. The rewards are broadly split into original work and for the first time ever some very limited edition prints. The prints are utterly unique to this campaign and will not be available in normal circumstances. The originals I have made available at less than half of their normal gallery price so once again this a great opportunity to secure one below normal market value. Images and links to images of all the rewards are featured below, so keep scrolling down.
A Stretch target of £10,000 is really my desired goal as then I would be able to have all the remaining 75 books bound. This would be ideal as I am booked to show at The Other Art Fair in Bristol in September and London in October.
However if I were able to achieve a further stretch goal of £12,500 I would hire The Strand Gallery in London for a more substantial solo exhibition. All backers would of course receive free invitations to any exhibitions.
Below are images of some of the major rewards and website links to some of the smaller ones. For rewards that have multiple options once you have pledged simply email me at email@example.com to confirm your choice. I'll be checking emails every 24 hours so will get back to you asap.
It's worth noting that the colours come across as harsh on this site. They are far more subtle particularly at the primary end of the spectrum. They come across far better in the project video. The colours will be perfect for the prints and books due to the exceptional photographer I'm using.

Original work not in the book
Here is an idea of the scale and feel of the book it's self, Reward 10
For rewards 13 and 14 (£250) I'm having some very small hand made sketch books of both my initial cube studies and my working out using material like this.

Risks and challenges
The main risk to the project would be the completion of the work. However I'm nearly done and have time only to improve on what I have achieved so far as my first and major deadline is the appointment to have the work photographed in London in late June.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
