ANIMAL: a new dance work made in Boulder, to be performed in Atlanta, rehearsed online.

I launched this KICKSTARTER campaign with a little over a month til show time.  NOW - we have just a few days left to reach our goal.  We are so close!  It's true that every little bit helps.   We hope you'll consider making a donation and helping us spread the word.

ANIMAL premieres September 20-22, 2013 at Skwhirlhaus in Atlanta, GA - we are counting the days!

Ticket sales won't be near enough to cover our costs, let alone buy the cast members nice fruit baskets to thank them for their work.

That KICKSTARTER now exists so that we can tell our stories in our own words and tell you what we need without showing you our middle school report cards or tax forms for the last 20 years is brilliant! I don't need to go into the trials and tribulations we go through to seek funding for our artistic endeavors.  THANK YOU KICKSTARTER!

My name is Julie Rothschild and I have been making and performing dances for 30 years.

In making ANIMAL, I am bridging my work as an Alexander Technique Teacher and a Contemporary Dance Choreographer.  This work is about exploring the process of losing and finding and reckoning with our animal instincts.  Alexander Technique gives us a means through which to reconnect to ourselves, become more aware of how we relate and respond to our surroundings, and turn the volume on our senses up a notch or two.  I believe that the live performance of ANIMAL will offer the same to our audience.  My hope is that the audience members find something of themselves in what we are doing on stage.

ANIMAL has been a long time coming.  While I have taken an intentional break from making, staging and producing dance for the stage, I have continued to make and post solos for a virtual audience - short dances that I am not attached to, that don't require marketing or selling tickets.  It's been an effortless and affordable means to continue exploring movement and my creative process.  ANIMAL comes at a time when I am personally ready to commit my energy to creating something for the stage with a group of extremely talented artists.

Skwhirlhaus, a new venue in Atlanta, recently put out a call for choreographers to open their inaugural season. Skwhirlhaus is a venue that I wish to support wholeheartedly.  I have spent most of my career in grassroots arts organizations and what they have built is such a gift.

"Skwhirlhaus cultivates a cooperative sustainable environment where creative individuals gather to present work and experience community."

When I saw this, I knew it was time for me to put my thoughts into action and make this dance.

I currently live in Boulder, Colorado.  Skwhirlhaus is in Atlanta, Georgia.  The audition and rehearsals have taken place virtually via Google+ Hangouts.

Does that work?

It does!  I send the dancers video to study, then when we meet, I give direction and watch the dancers respond.  They watch each other and are connecting despite the miles and computer screens between us.  It's not perfect.  It's not anything like working together in the studio.  And yet it's pretty awesome!

Why we need your help.

In September, the 11 of us are going to gather in Atlanta for an intensive week of putting it all together.  With your support, Heather McIntosh can come to Atlanta to complete the score and perform live.  Zap McConnell can spend a week with me in Atlanta designing the set and making costumes.  The dancers will all be compensated for their time and energy.  And our production costs will be covered.

All we need is you.

WHO is making this happen with me:

  • Creative Partner: John Gibson

Performers: Rebecca Enghauser, Amanda Martin, Thomas Jay Clark, Kimberly Kleiber, Juana Farafan, Lillian Mae Ransjin, Mary Grace Phillips, with John Gibson, Julie Rothschild, Zap McConnell and Heather McIntosh.

To thank you for backing this project, I have some sweet rewards for you, including:

  • Digital Slideshow and Video of ANIMAL!
  • Alexander Technique Lessons and Workshops!
  • A Skate Ski Lesson!
  • A 2 night retreat for 4 people in a cozy cabin in Eldora, CO!

Your help lets us know that you value what we do as art makers and that you understand that the arts are almost entirely dependent upon your support.

I want you to know how much your support means to me.  I really believe in this project and am thrilled to get back to the business of making dances.

From all of us making ANIMAL,

THANK YOU!

Julie

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Running into snafus during performance week is par for the course and we are all well rehearsed in creative problem solving when it comes to injury or illness, set malfunction, power outages. We will improvise our way around whatever shows up!
