Though there has been some headway made into accessible gaming in the last decade, many of these experiences have not been made freely and widely available. It may be that some games require complex installations or not enough distribution for the game was made. It may simply be that some are not aware that such games exist. I'd like to change that. I'm incredibly grateful that I've had the pleasure of growing up with video games and I feel that everyone deserves the ability to enjoy digital gaming, to experience its story and be entertained.
How's this going to happen?
The game will be made in Flash, which is something that's installed on most computers across the world, regardless of operating system. This also means the lowest barrier of entry to get players playing.
The game will also be Donationware, meaning it will be free in its entirety from the get go. If a person or organization would like to donate for the cause of further game development, then fantastic! If not, just enjoy the game!
I will be doing the development. I have a background in game development, writing and sound engineering (Shen Games). This will be an incredible project to work on and I am very excited about it!
Where are the donations going?
The donations for the project will be going toward the licensing of music and sound. Though I will be able to create some of those elements, I will not have the access to the resources to create dramatic orchestrated pieces (for example) or to record ambient sound from a cave miles deep. All sounds will most likely be purchased from professionals Soundrangers. The production value is really top notch. Any extra funding will go directly to the funding of sequels and future titles!
Some of the sounds in the trailer were actually ones I recently licensed/purchased from Soundrangers, so you can get a feeling of the quality level there.
Do you have an example of this type of gaming?
I actually created a game before that utilized only sound and the arrow keys on a keyboard. It was ported to Flash by Kaolin. The game is called Saber Duel and you can play it here. After receiving some very encouraging e-mails and donations, I realized more time and effort needed to be spent in crafting these kinds of game experiences.
When do you expect this to be finished?
After funding has closed, I am planning the game to be finished within three months. I'll have already started on it during the one month of Kickstarter fund raising, so I plan to have it out regardless of what happens! Expect it to be released by Summer 2010.
