At The Neighborhood Academy, we are "dedicated to developing the minds, bodies and spirits of our students so that they might become fully productive members of our society." We have come to see our new TNA Garden as an important part of upholding this mission. With our garden, we aim to expand educational opportunities, increase access to fresh, organic produce, inspire creativity and student art projects, and empower students to work for social and environmental justice in their communities and beyond. The first step in this great journey towards a successful garden is building up the garden space itself, which includes:
1) Building new raised beds and replacing the existing railroad tie raised bed in the herb garden (the ties can leach chemicals, which is no good!)
2) Preparing the existing soil through tilling and improving the soil health with compost and worm castings
3) Installing fencing to keep our local deer friends out
We will also need to purchase supplies for planting our crops and maintaining our garden throughout the season, including tools such as shovels, rakes, garden sheers, and trellises. We have already begun some of our seedlings inside with our graciously donated seeds, and are excitedly planning our garden art projects! With your collaboration, we know that we can get our project growing and start the first spring at TNA Garden with gusto!
