About this project

Griff is a true passion project being developed by a group of long-time friends with a love for platformers in common. We have many favorites on the original Playstation and N64 and aim to honor mid-to-late 90's mascots we grew up with such as Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon while bringing our own unique elements to the table. We can't compare Griff to the greats, but we can make a fun tribute with its own heart and soul. If you love the simple charm of early 3D, then jump on board my radical friend, because things are about to get old-school!

  • A new level of retro: play in PS1 style plus N64 & Dreamcast styles.
  • Glide across chasms, avoid deadly hazards, and earn new abilities.
  • 10 mythological realms filled with colorful creatures & characters.
  • Fun-filled character driven story line with full voiceover dialogue.
  • 5 playable characters and a variety of challenging minigames.
  • Shatter enemies, objects and scenery into collectible gold pieces.
  • Reveal new paths and turn objects into gold for puzzle solving too.
  • Take down a slew of challenging beastly foes and insane bosses.
  • Purchase special costumes and wings like Pegasus and Phoenix.

A playable demo of Griff the Winged Lion is now available!

Notes:
  • Due to the submission and porting process, PS4 and Xbox One console versions may release sometime later than the Steam version, but we'll be aiming to get the console editions released as close as possible to the Steam release window.
  • We are looking into the possibility of a Nintendo Switch release. This may depend on how funding and stretch goals turn out, but we love Nintendo consoles and we'll be doing the best we can to achieve this.

In the medieval kingdom of Autumn Terrace, a young prince named Griff is called upon to participate in a magical tradition. Once each generation, an old mage foresees the destinies of the kingdom's future leaders and bestows them with their sacred roles. When this time comes for Griff, however, his role is mysteriously shrouded from the mage. Griff embarks on an epic, yet unexpectedly hazardous journey through the neighboring realms in search of answers to the riddle of his destiny. With the help of his friends; Gargle (a hilariously over-reactive yet determined little gargoyle), Gavin (a brave griffin), Terra (a unicorn with remarkable powers) and Mia (a phantom cat with a sweet tooth for adventure) the young prince must unearth his true purpose and defend the realms against the treacherous tides which lay before them.

Griff is the main hero you play as, plus there are four other heroes you can control in a variety of fun levels and mini-game challenges!

A long, long time ago, the great King Midas was struck by a terrible curse. All that he touched, would turn to solid gold. In desperation, Midas turned to a sorcerer to help him control this terrible hex. The mage used his sorcery on a seemingly useless old pair of gloves, presenting them to the King. Once Midas put them on, they were old gloves no more, but instantly became a powerful relic of the purest golden sheen.

From that moment and ever afterward, this magical artifact could control the curse and prevent it from turning everything it touched. Midas even gained the ability to control the curse, and to use it when he desired. It is said that one strike of these mystical fists turns anything to glittering gold. While nothing originally of gold is affected by the Midas touch, that which is already made of cursed gold will shatter into a thousand pieces with a second blow.

After Midas' passing, the golden gloves were taken to a magical shrine and sealed away for centuries. Even to this day, the Midas gloves have long been sought after by greedy creatures who desire only dominion and wealth, even at the cost of trampling on the weak and the meek...

Once obtained, you can use the Midas gloves to turn many objects, scenery and enemies into gold, then shatter them and collect their scattered parts. The golden power can also be used to turn objects into gold when solving puzzles (e.g. at a shrine that requires a gold offering, or to change the weight of a puzzle object). Secrets are found within every area as well and new paths or platforms can often be revealed using the power of the gloves.

After 20+ years the original Playstation and N64 have become retro systems. Similarly to indie games creating nostalgic 8 & 16-bit aesthetics, we're aiming to harness some of the charm and simplicity of some of our favorite late 90's platformers. This is no easy task of course; many things must be considered. Despite the early 3D aesthetics, we've done away with some of the old limitations such as low frame-rate and low resolution. we have only imitated low-resolution edges with a crisp edge pixelator. We're also planning a very high animation quality with loads of lip sync and silly 'squash and stretch' movement, as seen in games like Crash Bandicoot 3 Warped and Banjo Kazooie. This takes a lot of time to achieve and we'll need to be as creative as possible with the low amount of polygons at our disposal. We absolutely love the look of pixelated textures on low-poly 3D. We'd like to get the design and aesthetics as authentic as possible, artistically and nostalgically speaking.

No 3D 90's platformer could be truly complete without having a comically burned or flattened protagonist. Griff the Winged Lion will feature a plethora of cartoony death animations for you to deflate your frustrations whenever we've clearly made a certain area too difficult. No worries, we'll try to keep things challenging at a steady rise without turning your head into a boiling tea kettle.

Griff's magical portals branch from his main world in Autumn Terrace to other magical realms with different culture's mythologies, each with their own characters and creatures.

We'll be using funding from Kickstarter for supporting the team in their development focus as well as on various assets for the release. Costs for system porting and release marketing will be provided by our Publisher, Spiral Summit Games. They're relatively small and new in the game themselves, but they have a lot of prior industry experience and have been great to work with for both us and other indies. As usual with gaming budgets, the goal may not cover the entire development cost, but the support, pledges and feedback of our backers is invaluable for helping Griff take off!

Risks and challenges

Luckily, most of the main concerns we had about developing a 3D platformer with these particular mechanics were solved with the completion of our playable demo. Having a playable core from the get-go ensured we'd have a solid foundation to work from to implement the more involved systems and style elements.

As with any game project, there may be future issues and bugs that insist on overstaying their welcome and happen only once in a blue moon. We'll do our best to resolve any issues and remain open and honest about everything. We do this both for you and just because we're naturally obsessive like that.

Although this won't be our first completed title, it's certainly our biggest and most ambitious yet. Anytime you explore new ground there will always be some unforeseen problems. As long time friends, we believe in discussing issues openly, even if it means admitting failure or starting a piece over and attempting to go about it a better way.

Even though we know these problems and risks may pop up, we believe in our ability to push through all these to deliver a great gaming experience for you guys.
