30 backers pledged $300 to help bring this project to life.

An apology to Kickstarter and what exactly happened.

I am posting the email exchanges between myself and KickStarter to apologize to them and to anyone I may have inadvertently annoyed during this project. Please accept my apology as that was never my intention.

IMPORTANT: To insure the continual wellbeing of my family, including myself, if you happen to know my or my families full identity NEVER DISCLOSE IT. Those who know my family well enough understand exactly why I have written this warning and those who may recognize me or my family but not understand why I have placed it should know that I would not ask for such considerations if it were not serious.

Now because things are always altered in the retelling I am posting the email exchanges between myself and KickStarter in chronological order. This will be the most candid account that anyone has ever posted about their experience during a KickStarter project. It does not flatter me in any way, I may come across as a tenacious single-minded selfish jerk but it is 100% factual. I am disclosing this information moments before my project ends so that I am not accused of doing this for some sort of self gain.It is my sincere hope that all who read it can ask themselves what they would have done on all sides of the situation and what they can learn from the events that accrued.

During the approximate midway of the project time period I was attempting to thank the creators of Double Fine and 2 Player Productions.

For a reply they had sent me when I discovered I had no access to post, email nor make changes to my project account.

I later found the fallowing email from KickStarter:

Hi Alfonso,

Aurora from Kickstarter here. Nice to meet you. I'm writing because we noticed you sending some unsolicited messages to other project creators about your project. Our Guidelines (http://www.kickstarter.com/help/guidelines) specify this kind of activity as spam, and it is not permitted. We take our guidelines very seriously; please take a minute to read through them. Appreciate your attention.

Because my disabilities make it exceptionally difficult for me to communicate by typing I tried to find a phone number for KickStarter but none was available. I even searched their incorporation documents online to try and find a phone number. Thus the only means by which I could communicate to KickStarter was by typing a message to their support form. Below is the copy KickStarter emailed me of what I typed:

It took me some time but I replied with the fallowing via the Kickstarter support form:

By failing to permit verbal communication Kickstarter is discriminating against individuals with disabilities such as myself and is most likely in direct violation to the Americans with Disabilities Act. You have been placed on notice. (Because Kickstarter dose not permit verbal communication I will need to dedicate at least a full day, if not more, to typing this message.)

Katherine,

A reply to your email is coming. It literally takes me days to make sure every word I type is correct on something so simple as an email. By failing to permit verbal communication Kickstarter is discriminating against individuals with disabilities such as myself and is most likely in direct violation to the Americans with Disabilities Act. You have been placed on notice.

I have dedicated the last two days to typing my message and I still have much to go. Please reconsider not permitting phone conversations as this policy is resulting in grueling hardship for me simply to communicate, It is also an abusive way to treat the handicapped.

4 hr to type this email.

You have been placed on notice. (Because Kickstarter does not permit verbal communication I had to dedicate two full weeks that I did not have to spear towards typing this message.)

2. It appears that Kickstarter has disabled my ability to communicate via its website and to make any updates or modifications to my currently active KickStarter project. This I believe has something to do with the fallowing email I received from Kickstarter.

Friday Feb 17, 11:54am EST

Sorry to bather you again but I really need help.

First thing, I have both severe dyslexia and severe spatial dysgraphia so communicating by typing is super difficult for me.

Do you mind sharing how you reached so many people. I am literally trying to giveaway the ultimate geometric display font as a currently active KickStarter project. (Do not take my word for it please see the project for yourself.) Yet almost no one knows about it, KickStarter is not promoting it, I have no online network and because I have such a severe combination of dyslexia and spatial dysgraphia typing anything takes me an enormous amount of time. (Have spent most of the day typing this.)

You can see the font here
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2112689177/man-greater-than-money......

The funding goal of $1.00 has been passed so I have to give the font for free but just about no one knows about it.

Again, I am not asking for pledges (not that I would turn them down) but simply for help in informing people about the font I will be giving away.

Please have some compassion.

Thank you for your time,
Alfonso

I fail to understand how reasonable people, be they a jury in court or of public opinion, can refer to the exchange by the spam miscategorization that Aurora has smeared upon it. Clearly the person to whom I was communicating to did not give any indication that they were bothered by it nor do your guidelines indicate that communicating with other project creators is prohibited. Furthermore, I have contacted a few other project creators and 100% of them have been supportive: often providing me with information, promoting my project and even funding it. The best thing about KickStarter is the authentic community of support among the project creators. We are all trying to learn from each other and we are simultaneously supporting and hoping for the best for each other. As I disclosed at the top of the Man Greater Than Money Font project, it "was created to build appreciation and a network of goodwill so when I announce my forth coming revolutionary project I can have an audience to communicate to directly". In other words, the goal of the project was not to raise money but to give the ultimate display font away to "build appreciation and a network of goodwill." All the project creators I have communicated with have provided support yet it pains me to recognize that the same cannot be stated about KickStarter.

I had studied your site for well over a year prior to launching this initial project. In that time I become aware of the many critiques which are posted about KickStarter throughout the Web. Everything from how your organization operates from a parasitic business model to how a number of projects which KickStarter has touted as successes have since admitted that  they themselves funded the remaining balance on their projects in order not to forfeit all the other donations made. I was also aware that a yet greater number of projects appear by the evidence to have engaged in this same practice. Yet, despite all these concerns, I decided to partner with KickStarter because I believe that on balance far more good is done for creative endeavors then if KickStarter did not exist at all. I just hope that by your actions you do not prove that I was wrong to believe in the KickStarter organization.

The fact that a person with my disabilities has created a single font, not a font family, with tens of thousands of variations of the characters-far more than any other pro font-in order to resolve the fundamental flaw of all roman fonts, namely that the inconsistent shape of the letters makes it impossible for the letters to fit like exact puzzle pieces unless each word is custom designed is not only a new  typographic paradigm but almost as startling as Ludwig van Beethoven having composed his Symphony No. 9 while deaf. This alone should justify a mention on your blog, twitter or something but I understand that no one at KickStarter may be a typophile and therefore unable to properly appraise the Man Greater Than Money Font. I would think, however, that even the most novice of observers could appraise that the scale of the font- which is too large to be shown in its entirety on your site- is many, many times larger than all the previous font projects combined.

Yet, this project is noting compared to the project I have been working on fulltime for more than two years now. Yes, that's fulltime as in forgoing generating an income, In my case I use to make a six figure salary, in order to have the time required to pull off a project that only becomes feasible once certain technologies-which have not yet been publicly disclosed-become readily available. To be clear the project in question is not a technology project but rather an arts project; it simply required what at the time was none existing technology to be pulled off. I have good reason to believe this necessary technology will be unveiled within a few weeks and I had planned on using KickStarter to publicly announce it. This project would be one of the most audacious and ambitious which KickStarter has ever featured.

Now before you start thinking I'm some kind of a delusional individual who has no idea of what a project of such magnitude would entail let me disclosed some of the minor adversities that my family and I have faced during the time of this currently active project. For one thing this project was supposed to go live at the start of December but during that same week my six year old child, the one I referenced in my project as spelling better than I do, was Baker Acted against the consent of my wife and I and essentially imprisoned in a hospitals mental ward. What was worse is that there was nothing whatsoever wrong with my daughter it was a case of well-meaning strangers prodigiously paving her road to hell. What you need to understand is that all my children, like myself, are Outliers. The child in question, for example, performs 3rd grade honors work for fun despite barely being old enough to be in the 1st grade. The problem is when someone who doesn't know her interacts with her. Too many people make the presumption that if a child is analytically gifted and exorcises a vast vocabulary they must therefore also posses a proportional share of wisdom when in actuality each is mutually exclusive. In fact the child in question might also have Aspirgers and is behind the norm at recognizing and accurately expressing her emotions. This is why when she was being bullied she expressed that she hated her life. She has since repeatedly explained that what she hated was her school life and not the act of living. The school was oblivious to the fact that she was being bullied despite the fact that my child was in a spacial class that consisted of one other student, the one doing the bulling when the teacher would frequently leave the classroom. My six year old child was taken to the school consoler, who in her own words upon first having meet her, stated that she was not qualified in these matters and did not know my daughter. The consoler, as she her self documented, pressed my intrepid six year old child, asking her if she hated her life what can she do about it. To which my daughter interpreted as both invalidating her feelings and a challenge. If theirs one thing every parent of a perfectionist child can tell you is that they never back down from an intellectual challenge. My six year old child, engaging logic rather than wisdom, replied that she can kill herself. To which, rather than explaining that such an act was wrong and attempting to understand why she was expressing such ideas, instead ask the analytical six year old how she would kill herself. "I can stab myself" the child replied; and when the counselor asked where would she get the knife the 6 year-old replied from the kitchen, never mind that in her home there never have been any knives but for the completely dull butter knife. The problem was that to someone who had never been to our home and had never previously interacted with my daughter what this six year old child had stated seemed completely possible and worse yet, Florida law as written, required for her to be institutionalized for evaluation.

We spent days at the hospital attempting to have our daughter released all the while those who wielded the authority to release her, thou having exceptionally limited contact with my daughter, made it blatantly and consistently clear in both their actions and their words that their priority was to legally cover their rear-ends over the actual well being of my six year old daughter.

In addition to the enormous emotional grief, the bureaucracy and chain of events that occurred as a result of this incident cost my wife and I to spend many days in meetings and lose much income. After a month of this, my wife's employer forced her to quit resulting in the loss of the only income for our family. This meant that while the currently active KickStarter project was running my family had no means of sustaining itself. In fact about three weeks ago we had less than $3 to our name and were less than a week away from becoming homeless with no prospect of finding a place to stay. My wife and I were spending every moment we could, at the public library's internet connection looking for work. Fortuitously our tax returns came in just-in-time and my wife was offered a job. The next project WILL HAPEN but for my death or complete paralysis there is no obstacle that shall permanently derail it. I hope we can work together to announce it but we still need to resolve the situation at hand.

As it now stands, KickStarter is collecting money under both my name and my project, all the while not permitting me to communicate with these donors via the KickStarter website nor informing me as to what will become of my project. This is in direct violation to the terms by which I agreed to have this project on KickStarter. Not only does it demonstrate poor judgment by the kickstart organization but it is also in direct contradiction to itself as your organization continues to send email's which indicate that I should communicate with my donors. Additionally, by not permitting me to update the project you’re altering the scope of the project as I wanted to post that I have contacted Googol fonts and will be offering an additional simplified version of the font as a web front. Most troubling to me, however, is the critical harm that KickStarter may be inflicting upon my reputation.

First, by making me seem like a jerk who does not thank his supporters and secondly if your organization pulls my project, now that I have promoted it, that act would give my supporters the false impression that there was something fraudulent about me or my project. If KickStarter were to commit such slander to my reputation I would have no recourse but to post this email every were that KickStarter is mentioned on the web and to forward it to every one who has written about KickStarter in other that my side of the story may at lest have a chance of being heard. At no point during this project have I ever hinted at the turmoil’s my family was facing. After all, what dose my personal life have to do with the project excepts for the fact that in the real world sometimes your personal life can create incredible obstacles towards promoting your visionary projects. Thus, this nuisance I am facing with KickStarter might only be a nuisance but it just might also be the straw to breaks my silence.

I am baffled as to why KickStarter would care to cast itself as the bad guys but that is precisely what you're doing through your actions. I am hopeful that we can easily resolve this if we were to simply speak to each other, but as no one from KickStarter has spoken with me, despite my multiple email requests, the situation persists. I apologize if I have come across a bit harshly in this email for that has not been my intention; I am simply attempting to resolve the matter at hand. So call me already and let us resolve the matter otherwise I will have no recourse but to make public the factual account of how KickStarter collected money under the name and project of a handicapped destitute husband and father who's family was on the verge of becoming homeless yet did not permit him to nether communicate with his backers, make any updates to his project nor did KickStarter even bother to communicate to him what was going to accrue with his project. All the while, making it next to impossible for the handicapped destitute man to communicate with KickStarter even after he had sent multiple emails pleading with KickStarter to communicate with him in a manner in which he could engage in. Which in turn may have harmed the handicapped mans reputation which will be critical for him to have in pristine order when he publicly discloses his massive project. That is what KickStarter factually did.

Hi Alfonso,

Thanks for writing in. We did not hear back from you that you would stop sending unsolicited messages to users, which is why your account remained suspended. I've now unsuspended you, so you can now update your project and get in touch with your backers. Please don't send any more unsolicited messages or we will need to take further action. Thanks!

A copy of the email I sent appeared below the Kickstarter reply which I have removed to conserve space.

So everything seemed to be good and all was forgiven when somehow I manage to discover a completely new way to step in it.

I started using Twitter for the first time to informing organizations or people who specifically twitter about font projects such as mine about the Man Greater Than Money Font.

Because I cannot correctly identify letters or numbers, do to my disability, I spent many weeks sending tweets that had the wrong link to my project. When I learned of this I tried to let everyone know the correct link by using the @ replies. I still do not understand why this is bad (would appreciate an explanation) but I once more ended up with no access to my account. What follows is the exchange:

I am ONLY informing organizations or people who specifically twitter about font projects such as mine aboute the Man Greater Than Money Font. As these entities are actively seeking/soliciting and distributing this specefik kind of information it is, objectively speaking, factually incorrect to miss label it as "spam". At no point have i contacted organizations nore people who do not meet the previusly stated criteria. The guidelines do NOT state that contacting information outlets is not permitted if you happen to contact them by way of twitter.

I have received much praise from those I have contacted by using the tool of twiter and not one single complaint. You yourself have never indicated that you received a complaint. Have you? Becouse if you have I would like to offer my apology to both kick starter and the personae I anoed.

By your brald definition of "unsolicited" all initial contact with an entity including your messages to me would be difined as spam. So with all do respect I do not believe it racinal to reply to an asurtion that holds no logical nor legal merite.

We are pratners in this indever and must treat each other accordingly and with respect.

I awaited your reply,
Alfonso

PS An important detail is that at no point have I asked anyone by twiter to fund the project, that was not my Goul, only to promote the font.

Hi Alfonso,

Your project was reported to us for spamming, so someone did complain. Apologies for any confusion, but we consider it spam to send unsolicited @-replies to people on Twitter who don't follow you.

Please stop doing this or your Kickstarter account will be suspended

I had sent some @ replies to some people becouse I still do not comptly understand how twiter workers and what is the correct ways to use it, i started using it with this protect. When I lurned of this I tried to let everyone now the correct link by using the @ replies to everyone one after the other. I have to admite that I still do not understand why this is bad. Can you please explain? In fact I may still make some more mistakes, but I am not tring to spam anyone. I put my fone number on the top and bottom of the project so if I got people angry Thay could call me in the misdial of the night just to anouy me. I will post an update on the project apologizing to any one I may have around.

Alfonso

Thus this is my apology to anyone I may have unintentionally annoyed.
