Information about the demo

Mage's Initiation has been funded! THANK YOU!

Thanks to our amazing backers! We couldn't have done it without you. Now it's time to aim for our stretch goals! We have opened up a PayPal funding option so those who are unable to use Amazon payments still have a way to back the game. Click the image below to pledge via PayPal.

Current PayPal Pledges: $2,591

LIST OF STRETCH GOALS:

Our rewards system is simple:  All tiers include the rewards from previous tiers, with 3 exceptions:

  • Tiers with a limited number of backers: these exclusive rewards don't carry over to subsequent tiers.
  • The Collector's Edition box will replace the DVD case edition for anyone who pledges at $100 or higher.
  • The $50 and $70 all-digital tiers stand alone and don't roll into the other tiers, as they were specially constructed for backers who only want digital rewards.

The Kickstarter version of the game will be released for Windows.

Now that we have met our Porting stretch goal, we will be giving out Wine wraps at the PC release then upgrade Mac and Linux users to the native versions when the engine ports are ready.  This is for DIGITAL COPIES, if you're a Mac user and would like to see physical Mac copies in our store, let us know!

Android and iOS copies cannot be offered as rewards due to rules relating to their distribution (which are beyond our control).

Mage's Initiation is a Role-Playing / Adventure Game hybrid, very similar in style and execution to Sierra On-Line's classic Point-&-Click Quest for Glory and King's Quest series. It maintains all the charm of classic and timeless adventure games of yesteryear while adding 21st century innovation to the mix -  like multiple game interfaces, and a free-range magical combat system!

We're all very big fans of the adventure genre here at Himalaya Studios, and we feel that Sierra's games really hit their peak in the early 90s. We're working hard to provide a nostalgic experience, reminiscent of that golden era of 2D Sierra adventures circa 1993-1994.

Mage's Initiation has a medieval / fantasy setting and it features multiple playable character classes, spell-casting, and an open-field magical combat system, complete with equippable items and monster loot drops!

In the quiet, provincial realm of Iginor, evil is stirring. Dangers abound on all sides: the forest, wastelands, and even the once-protective mountains look to the tiny town with glaring eyes. Into this, a young, would-be Mage sets forth to prove himself worthy of joining the ranks of his brethren. This is his journey. A Mage's Initiation.

You assume the role of D'arc, a sixteen-year-old Initiate who must complete a trio of tasks set by his Mage Masters. Journey through the medieval-styled realm of Iginor. Brave a goblin-infested forest. Navigate a vast lake to encounter an evil so pure, not even beauty can disguise it. Ascend to the peaks of Flyteria, a valley of winged warriors once dedicated to protection of the human town.

Succeed and D'arc shall take his place among his fellow Mages.

Fail and nobody shall remember his name.

What awaits you beyond the safety of the Mages' Tower?

The realm's winged guardians may assist you... but can you gain their trust?

All those warnings about the forest were probably exaggerated... right?

Himalaya Studios, the team behind the four acclaimed AGD Interactive Sierra remakes, and the commercially released "Al Emmo and the Lost Dutchman's Mine", has experience in game development, dating back to 2001.

At a time when the industry was paying little attention to the adventure game genre, co-founders Britney Brimhall and Christopher Warren set out to remake Sierra's flagship title, "King's Quest I: Quest for the Crown".

The project soon attracted public attention and downloads rose rapidly. In the month following, official sales of Sierra's then four-year-old "King's Quest: Mask of Eternity" spiked enormously, outselling even new releases (*PC Data/NPD, October 2001). We soon realized the impact our remake was having, and subsequently developed remakes of King's Quest II & III, and Quest for Glory II.

Despite the success of our licensed Sierra remakes, we've always wanted to develop an original Adventure / RPG set in a medieval fantasy world, reminiscent of the classic storytelling which remains popular today. With Mage's Initiation, we are realizing this vision as we pool our efforts into an exciting new title!

We're working alongside some exceptional talent, who have contributed to such acclaimed adventure titles as Wadjet Eye Games' Resonance and the forthcoming Hero-U, the game recently Kickstarted by Quest for Glory creators Lori and Corey Cole.

The team responsible for your case of nostalgiavitus.
Christopher Warren - CEO and Co-Founder
Chris was a late-comer to Sierra's adventure games, not having played any of the classics until '93. After getting his first taste of King's Quest, he quickly became hooked and made up for lost time. He established AGD Interactive and Himalaya Studios with company co-founder Britney Brimhall, and has directed all projects developed by both studios over the past 13 years. In his capacity as CEO, he not only manages the company, but also gets his hands dirty working on game design, art, animation, and programming. This ensures a constant overview from simultaneous administrative and creative perspectives, resulting in a greater degree of control over how the game looks, plays, and feels.

Daniel Stacey - Writer and Designer

Daniel was first introduced to adventure games at the impressionable age of twelve, a moment which inspired a frenzied flurry of fan fiction and original works. Now a teacher, he attributes his love of literacy, writing and interactive storytelling to these gems, both past and present, and hopes to continue writing and designing games for the benefit of players. His past contributions include AGD Interactive's remakes of King's Quest II and III, and the commercially released Al Emmo and the Lost Dutchman's Mine. With Daniel's talent for game design and engaging storytelling, Mage's Initiation promises to be enjoyable and satisfying experience for even the most hardened adventure gamer!

Britney Brimhall - Company Co-founder and Artist
Britney is an entrepreneur and artist from Arizona. She has over a decade of hands-on experience reviving classic adventure gaming, and also growing AGD Interactive and Himalaya Studios--both of which she co-founded with Christopher Warren. She has worked in numerous capacities from business to design to art production. Britney has contributed to highly acclaimed remakes of the "King's Quest" and "Quest for Glory" series, as well as original titles like "Al Emmo and the Lost Dutchman's Mine", and most recently, "Mage's Initiation". She has also worked on Educational, Serious, and Hidden Object titles, but her true love and specialty is development of Classic Adventure and Role Playing Games.

Rachel Presser - CFO and Executive Producer
Rachel Presser first came into contact with King's Quest at the age of five, determined to make her own epic adventures one day. She studied computer science at Lehman College a year after Sierra's official closure, but life events caused a shift in gears. Rachel became a licensed tax professional renowned for catering to niche businesses and alt cultures, and earned nearly a decade of small business management experience. With backgrounds in finance and logistics, she will ensure we stay on budget and that all of our awesome backers will get the great game and swag they are due. Refusing to let her dream of working with adventure games die, she now manages Himalaya Studios as Chief Financial Officer and Executive Producer.

John-Paul Selwood - Lead Background Artist
JP's passion for art began at an early age with children's authors Maurice Sendak and Steven Kellogg being an early influence. His introduction to adventure gaming began with The King's Quest collection. The VGA graphics of the Sierra-Online classics have influenced and served as inspiration for his backgrounds in Mages Initiation, and most recently Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption. In addition to adventure game art, John-Paul has ventured into book illustration, with his most recent work being showcased in The Hidden Crystal by Daniel Gimness.

Eriq Chang - Branding and Production Artist

Artist Eriq Chang has created design & illustration for major entertainment and consumer brands for over 16 years. An avid Sierra fan, his projects include creative direction with Brandon Klassen and Brad Herbert on the long-awaited 'Art of Sierra' project and developing pixel-y goodness with childhood inspirations like Andy Hoyos and Lori & Corey Cole. But it is working with family at AGDI & Himalaya that reminds him most of home and where it all began. Eriq's design work on the collectibles has been amazing and we're certain you're going to love the swag he's whipped up for you!

Shane Stevens - Lead Character Designer & Animator
Shane is an Electronics Engineer/game developer who fell in love with game design while playing with development tools on the Commodore 64 in the 80's. His passion for using video games as a medium for compelling, interactive stories has kept him busy working on art, music, and programming for over 17 years and he has multiple freeware and commercial games under his belt, including The Blackwell Convergence and his work on the highly acclaimed hit Resonance. As lead pixel sprite artist for Mage's Initiation, he is dedicated to providing visually colorful and detailed characters and set pieces for the player to interact with.

Jeremy Kitchen - Character Animator
Jeremy found adventure games in 1986 with the release of Black Cauldron. He has had a passion for them ever since. In 2007 he joined Infamous Adventures and has since become the Art Director of Quest for Infamy, following their successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012. He is helping Himalaya Studios produce supporting character and monster animations where needed. With incredible rate of work and a true passion for his craft, Jeremy is bringing Mage's Initiation's to glorious, animated life!

Carlos Hoyos - Character Animator
Carlos Hoyos is a cartoonist and animator who has worked in a few short movies and won a bunch of art (and film) contests. He spent a sizable part of his childhood watching adventure movies, reading choose-your-own-adventure books and playing adventure games, though he had the most fun programming them in BASIC. He currently works on the animations for Mage's Initiation, and secretly admires all those who can both work hard and enjoy it.

Karen Petrasko - Dialog Portrait Artist
Karen is a digital artist who has been fortunate to find a career combining her love of games and art. She's collaborated on many small teams developing 2D games in a wide variety genres, from tower defense to hidden object games. Most recently her work has been featured in Waking Mars and Defender's Quest, both available on Steam. Karen is lending her jaw-dropping talent to Mage's Initiation's dialog portraits, bringing emotive traits to the game's wide cast of characters.

Jess Beebe - 2D Cutscene Animator
Jess first discovered Sierra On-Line's games in the late '80s, but didn't become truly familiar with their work until the late '90s. Since then, she has played a variety of adventure games by numerous companies and worked on several independent adventure games as well, often drawing on her skills as an artist and writer. Having been fascinated by traditional 2D animation for some time, she was happy to land a job as a cutscene animator for Himalaya Studios.

Brandon Blume - Musician/Composer
Brandon loves adventure games and specifically adventure game soundtracks. He enjoys recounting the times as a child when he'd play through Sierra and LucasArts games for certain game areas just to listen to the music. The passion he felt from the games of the 90s was largely due to the music and he's since enjoyed translating his own passion into the music and game soundtracks he's composed. Brandon has written scores for Sierra remakes as well as his own personal projects and enjoys continuing to express that passion for Mage's Initiation.

Jason Mearls - Programmer
Jason Mearls was introduced to computers at an early age and grew up with classic gaming. Though he enjoys all forms of gaming, he has a particular fondness for the classic Sierra and Lucasarts adventure games, his favorite being the Quest for Glory series. This passion for gaming lead Jason to pursue programming and game development as a hobby and he has since worked on projects with Infamous Adventures and now Himalaya Studios. As the principle programmer on Mage's Initiation, Jason is adept at working up to his eyeballs - and above - in game code. He has a knack for facing the many challenges inherent in game scripting: spontaneous puzzle re-designs, taming the dialogue system, ironing out kinks in our multiple interfaces, and balancing the game's RPG logic.

Morgan Busch - Combat Engine Programmer
Morgan Busch was raised on lemon cake, home-made bread, and classic Sierra games, including King's Quest and Quest for Glory. He was introduced to AGDI's King's Quest II remake while in college, and thought he had found nerd heaven. After tinkering with the Adventure Game Studio engine, learning how to draw, and losing lots of sleep, he single-handedly produced Arden's Vale, AGS's 2011 Short Game of the Year. He is thrilled to be coding nasty battle scenarios for you to encounter, while working on Mage's Initiation with the team that first introduced him to the joys of adventure game making.

Mage's Initiation is a fortuitously art-intensive game featuring over 80 beautifully-illustrated backgrounds. The style we shot for was greatly inspired by Sierra legends like Andy Hoyos and Peter Ledger. Back in the day, we loved the way they crammed so much detail into low-res graphics, not to mention the stunning cover artwork on the game boxes! We wanted Mage's Initiation's art to recapture that feel-good, nostalgic look from a bygone era -- the diverse terrain and scenery which the protagonist encounters on his epic journey: mountains, deserts, and forestry all complimenting one another, as seen in King's Quest V and Quest For Glory I. In addition, the contrasting of bright and verdant fantasy settings with ominous Gothic tones like in King's Quest VI, Quest For Glory IV, and Legend of Kyrandia.

We have assembled a cadre of extremely talented artists and animators with a passion for retro adventure games. Shane Stevens, whose sprites you might recognize from Resonance, has masterfully crafted a multitude of hi-res character sprites with a distinctive retro look. Jeremy Kitchen and Carlos Hoyos have also diligently animated NPC and monsters to give them that familiar vintage style with plenty of flair.

In keeping with retro tradition, the game will feature lip-synced portraits whenever characters talk. Karen Petrasko has taken on the task of giving our characters a soul with her incredibly detailed artistic talents, the depth of which gives this old-school concept a facelift befitting a modern game!

Our 2D cutscene animator, Jess Bebe, has also been very hard at work, creating some terrific and fun animated sequences that will play at certain game intervals.

Eriq Chang is no stranger to our games, and his artistic expertise is being put to full use for Mage's Iniation. Eriq's working on the design of some of our collectible swag items - so you know they'll be a treat.

Overall, we are familiar with the impact that a well-made and artistically beautiful game can have on the player. We have a very good feeling that the art in Mage's Initiation will tug at your nostalgia strings in the best way possible!

We love Brandon Blume's musical style! The wide range of themes and emotions he brought to center stage in our King's Quest III Redux really hit the nail on the head and we just knew he was the guy for the Mage's soundtrack! Listen to some of Brandon's enchanting Mage's Initiation themes below:

We have already invested significant time and money into Mage's Initiation via self-funding and most of the major legwork has already been completed. In order to see this game through to its conclusion in a timely fashion (and to the quality anticipated) we're asking for your generous support. We've been honored and privileged to have an enthusiastic and passionate fan-base and, with your help, we promise to deliver a fantastic game worthy of player expectations. Kickstarter has proven a very successful means of raising support and awareness for our beloved adventure genre and we'd love to have your backing in our continued endeavors!

Want a Steam key? Help Mage's Initiation get Greenlit! Your vote, favorite, and comments go a long way towards helping us get the game out to a wider audience. Every single backer is guaranteed a Steam key if Mage's Initiation is accepted onto the platform!

Our goal is simple: to develop the best possible 2D Sierra-style adventure / RPG hybrid game we can! We're aiming for a target of $65,000. We have determined that after rewards, fees, and taxes, this goal will provide us with the minimum we need to complete a commercial adventure game with rich, detailed features that our fans have come to expect from us, and within a reasonable time-frame.

To finish Mage's Initiation with a heavy dose of polish, we need your help. While much of the design, artwork, and other assets have been completed, we still have a way to go to bring it to the level our supporters have come to expect from us.

Pledged funds will go toward paying our talented team to complete outstanding tasks, hiring voice actors, marketing/PR to boost our signal, and providing you with the most epic experience as a result.

Some of the rewards you could get your hands on!
Some of the rewards you could get your hands on!

We have sourced a slew of enchanting rewards for those of you as excited as we are about bringing Mage's Initiation to fruition! From the low-ballers to the high-rollers - we've got you covered!

Below is an infographic showing visual depictions of the rewards at each reward tier. The infographic is long, however, so if you find it difficult to compare tiers visually, here is a matrix for easier comparison:

Reward Tiers Matrix Here!

Now that we have met our initial funding goal, the game can be expanded to include a set of entirely new class-based side-quests, additional enemies to fight, more loot, new characters, new environments, an autographed novel, FRIGS (French, Russian, Italian, German, and Spanish) language translations, and additional 2D cutscenes.

Heck, because we appreciate you helping us out so much, we'll even throw in one new  collectible polyresin character figure for every stretch goal we meet! These will be rewarded to backers at certain tiers at NO extra cost!

Take a look at the stretch goals table at the top of the page to see everything we have planned!

Rachel (our CFO) has determined that we need a minimum of $35,000 to see Mage's Initiation to postmortem. You may be wondering why we are asking for $65,000 instead of $35,000 if that is the case.

After two months of detailing a development schedule, in addition to a budget for the rewards we're offering and shipping after Kickstarter and Amazon take their cut, the necessary buffer was estimated to be between $25,000 - $30,000.

Being the most fiscally conservative death metal singer we know, she suggested a buffer of $30,000 to cover other expenses such as campaign overhead and marketing/PR efforts, not to mention taxes. But she won't bore you with tax talk (even Slagg, the Great Red Demon, is scared to go near her spreadsheets.) Although she will say that you need not worry about our budget being eaten alive by taxes as she is quite familiar with many advanced tax planning techniques, which will keep the Lord of Iginor's greedy paws out of our gold reserves.

We'd like to thank Emily Morganti for helping to spread the word about our AGDI and our Sierra remakes over the years, and also giving us a hand with promoting Mage's Initiation to a wider audience!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

As an independent studio, we know well the inherent difficulties associated with developing and distributing a quality game. We also know the pain of having to abandon intended features due to time and budget constraints, especially when dealing with a plot and story of the breadth and scope we like to tell, complete with all the bells and whistles.

That said, we have released five successful adventure game titles on extremely low budgets – to critical acclaim, no less. We are well-placed to see our latest and subsequent projects through, produced to even higher standards with a budget befitting the quality we strive to attain.

Over the past three months, we carefully sourced all of our rewards with much detailed analysis of everything from the polyresin figures, and t-shirts down to the shipping services and supplies used to get them to you. In addition to game development, our team members have experience in other fields including (but not limited to) financial management, professional printing, logistics, and retail management. Drawing upon this diverse experience and knowledge has enabled us to take great care with working the rewards into the budget to ensure that we stick to it without compromising the quality of the swag and game. We will deliver everything that is promised and still have the funding required to make a great game. We will be transparent about where your money is going.

This is not to say that we’re taking the success of this Kickstarter project as a given. We have planned for just opposite, in fact. Mage's Initiation will be developed and released, even if this crowd-funding campaign does not reach its goal -- albeit with fewer features and over an extended development time, and with less awesome swag in your hands out the gate.

We want to take the opportunity to thank every one of you - both long time fans and new-comers, who have supported and intend to support our endeavors to bring you the best gaming experience possible. May the adventures continue!

  • When we send out our backer surveys, we will ask what platform you prefer for your digital copy. For those who select Mac, you will get a Wineskin wrapped version of the PC game. A native version won't be made available unless we reach our Porting stretch goal of $120,000.

If we succeed and reach $120,000, Mac backers will get the wrapped version when the Windows release is out, then get a free upgrade to the native version once it is ready.

  • The resolution options in the AGS engine (which we are creating the game in) is currently one of the engine's shortcomings. Since AGS is now open source, some programmers are currently working on adding support for any resolution, but since these implementations rely on third parties, we can't make any promises about support for other resolutions just yet. Though, 16:9 resolution is something we'll definitely need to investigate for Android and iOS versions (assuming we meet the $120k stretch goal). We'll keep you guys posted about this.

At the moment, running a 4:3 AGS game on a 16:9 monitor will work, but place vertical black bars at the left and right screen edges.

  • In short, yes. It was originally mentioned that pricing was "to be announced" and that the pre-order list was just a notification to let people know when the game was nearing release (and to give us an early idea of the type of numbers we'd need to cater to) -- meaning that customers could make a decision at that point whether they wanted to pay the cost of the Collector's Edition or not. Given the new price breaks we're getting on items being manufactured/printed, most of which required us to open wholesale accounts with our suppliers (economies of scope), the Collector's Edition is actually better value-for-money now than it was going to be before at around the same price.

Having said that, should this campaign reach its target goal, we'll be selling boxed copies and posters both individually from the Himalaya store after the campaign ends. They'll be made available without all the extras/swag (for a lower price).

  • Sorry, but no. Activision owns the King's Quest IP and our hands are tied to make anything King Quest's related for sale. It would be too much of a legal gray area to risk now. We're hoping that the rest of the awesome swag we are offering makes up for it!

We've been carefully planning this for months, and have lined up our suppliers and costs far ahead of time. -Unchecking the "Side borders on widescreen monitors" option.
-Checking the "Run in a window instead of full-screen" box
-Changing the "Graphics driver" setting to DirectDraw 5
-Changing the "Graphics filter" to "None"

Usually, only one of the above steps is required, so you may wish to try them in the listed order.
