Utopiates Audio Drama (Canceled)
Sex, Drugs, and Biotech: Welcome to the future, where the only escape is at the tip of a dream needle.
In the near future, science is able to distill human personalities into a drug-form. Called utopiates—a merging of the words utopia and opiate—these drugs allow users to swap personalities with the "mental imprints" of other people. Every user has his or her own reasons for seeking chemical escape, but all soon learn the high price of "soul swapping." At its core, Utopiates is an unflinching portrayal of human behavior at its most extreme. The first chapter of the Utopiates graphic novel can be read free online HERE.
Created in the spirit of William Gibson and Phillip K. Dick, Utopiates portrays a gene-spliced tomorrow that falls in a dark territory between Blade Runner and The Wire. Based on the hit graphic novel by Josh Finney and Kat Rocha, the Utopiates audio drama will be a full-cast adaptation of the book, produced by AudioComics and starring Denise Poirier, best known as the voice of MTV's Æon Flux.
This project will be helmed by Audie Award-winning director Bill Dufris and performed by both veteran and emerging voice actors. This is not an audiobook, but rather an audio film with a full-cast, immersive sound design and an original score by BBC composer Jonathan Sharp. Choice songs from bands Bio-Tek, New Mind, and Slingshot Venus will appear in the production. Going above and beyond the classic radio plays of old, Utopiates will bring the art form into the 21st Century, applying the same level of detail, sound design, and effects we've come to expect from a high-budget film.
This will be the second outing for Josh Finney and AudioComics: in 2011 they teamed up to adapt Finney's futuristic war story, Titanium Rain. The production was nothing short of groundbreaking, and in turn was nominated for two Audie Awards (the Oscars of the audio book industry) in the categories of Best Audio Drama and Best Original Work, and won both and Earphones Award an the coveted Silver Mark Time Award for science-fiction excellence in the audio medium. Below is an extended cut from Titanium Rain:

Upon completion, backers will receive the Utopiates audio, either in compact disc or digital form, depending on what pledge options you choose. But if we can achieve at least one critical stretch goal, your Utopiates experience will encompass so much more.
If your help takes us beyond our initial pledge goal to raise an extra $5000, Utopiates will become a TWO DISC SET, and include three all-new original stories set in the Utopiates universe. The lead story for this second disc will be penned by none other than veteran cyberpunk author, John Shirley. Over the course of his career, Shirley has become an institution all is own, known for his groundbreaking Eclipse Trilogy novels, his collaborations with William Gibson, and for his many scripts for film and television--most notably, Shirley wrote the screenplay for The Crow, as well as one of the best known episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
By becoming part of Team Utopiates you'll have the opportunity to get in on a range of unique incentives. Along with coffee mugs, limited art prints, and a chance to have your name appear in the audio drama, backers who select one of the Artist Incentives will have custom artwork rendered for them by either renowned fantasy artists Patrick McEvoy or Salvadore Trakal, or the creator of Utopiates, Josh Finney.

Risks and challenges
The only possible risk comes with our director's schedule as a narrator and director of audiobooks. As he is a prominent member of the audio book community, he is sometimes called upon to work on an audio book for any one of a number of companies. Should this occur "Utopiates" would be delayed by no more than a month.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
