What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

Pinball Pyramid

  • What?

It's not magic, but it is eye catching.  This is a bracket that is thin enough to be barely noticeable underneath a pyramid of stacked pinballs (1 & 1/16 inch steel balls).  I made my first prototype in February 2017 and experimented with it at the Texas Pinball Festival (as shown in the video).  After optimizing the design I had a Pinball Pyramid on display at my sales booth in the York Pinball show.  Now I'm ready to offer the  Pinball Pyramid to pinball lovers everywhere to set up displays accenting their game rooms, offices, fireplace mantle ... heck, some folks might want one in every room of their house!  If you know somebody who is in to pinball this could be the perfect gift.

  • Why?

Well, for starters it looks cool...  I've set up pyramids at several pinball shows this year and they are attention grabbers.

Second, most folks with pinball machines change out their pinballs periodically because old balls can be rough and can be abrasive on the playfield.  Rather than throwing the old ones out, why not put them on display?

  • When?

As you can see in the video I've got a the completed product ready for production.  The demonstration on my pool table and on the glass table (which isn't level, btw) are from October 2017; the demonstration at the Texas Pinball Festival is from March 2017. I've got agreements in place with one manufacturer so I know I can deliver the limited-quantity "front of the line" batch in time for Christmas gift-giving.  Depending on the success of this Kickstarter Campaign, I can simply use the same manufacturer to complete the entire campaign (possibly by the close of 2017) or I can add additional manufacturing to complete in early 2018.

  • What's next?

After the campaign ends the Pinball Pyramid will be available for purchase on my pinball products web site at http://www.kahr.us

  • Can KAHR.US provide the pinballs?

I could, but it really wouldn't make any sense.  Pinballs are heavy, so paying a retailer to ship them to me just to repackage and re-ship to supporters is not fiscally effective.  When the project funds I will provide supporters with recommended sources for purchasing pinballs.

Risks and challenges

I've been successfully delivering the products I create (e.g., the WPC Power Fix, the Pinball 2000 H+V Video Sync Combiner) for years so there is very little risk that I will not follow through and complete the project. I have literally delivered thousands of items to customers and am known for quickly filling orders.

The product is in the manufacturer's hands and approved for production, so there is very little risk that manufacturing will fail or would be delayed. I've used this manufacturer before and they have an excellent reputation for both quality and delivery.
