"If one had but a single glance to give the world, one should gaze on Istanbul."
Alphonse de Lamartine
WHAT WE WANT TO DO
Our plan is to produce an accessible document, a spatial encyclopedia that collects and communicates the many varied and unique spatial characteristics of Istanbul. As a city that has a very long and rich history and as the only city in the world that is situated on two continents, Istanbul has a huge wealth of different spatial circumstances, activities, and traditions. As architects, we have a significant interest in the spatial make-up and patterning of large urban areas like Istanbul. The city's history and mix of eastern and western cultural identities and traditions make it an extremely fascinating site for spatial investigation and research. The findings of our ongoing research of the city will be free and available to all. It is our hope that this work will add to the current discourses taking place in the fields of architecture and urban design.
This will be an ongoing project. Eventually we would like to develop an iPhone app that will utilize our research to offer users [visitors to Istanbul] unique GPS-based walking tours of the city. The goal is for the app to provide urban explorers of Istanbul with a tool that allows for a spatial experience of the city on a whole new level.
We firmly believe that as two students of architecture we have a particular view of the spaces of a city that gives us the exciting opportunity to bring others into new unrealized experiences of the city. One of the most exciting aspects of being architects, for us, is to be able to open up completely new worlds of spatial experience and perception to those around us. We see this project as one such exciting opportunity.
SOME PROJECTS THAT CAME BEFORE:The following projects in one way or another served to inspire this project and we will be looking to them often as precedents for our own research.
Learning from Las Vegas: Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, Steven Izenour
Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies: Reyner Banham
Delirious New York: Rem Koolhaas
Made in Tokyo: Guide Book: Junzo Kuroda, Momoyo Kaijima [Atelier Bow Wow]
THE PLANIn school we participated in the production of a "pattern book" for the city of Amsterdam - here are some sample entries from the project:
This will be the starting point for our field research in Istanbul. We will be relentless explorers and documentarians. We will sketch, photograph, interview, record, and film as many urban spatial patterns as we can. The key is to walk through the city with especially keen eyes and a sincere sense of curiosity. We will surely make many friends as we learn more and more about the everyday activities that take place in the many different spaces of the city.
WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR
The money will be used to cover travel expenses in and around Istanbul for a period of 1 month, documenting equipment [video camera], printing costs, and research supplements [archive/museum access].
ANY QUESTIONS, IDEAS, ADVICE, SUGGESTIONS, PLEASE CONTACT US!
We would love to hear your thoughts on this project! Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We'll respond as soon as possible.
When the research begins we will be posting our work in progress to a blog devoted to the project. In the meantime, please check out our current blog, Detroit -> Istanbul, where we have begun to collect interesting bits of information about Istanbul ranging from the food to the music to the contemporary design culture in preparation for our time there.
WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT!
