Hi, my name is Harald Geisler. I am a typographer and I create a series called Typographic Postcards (1, 2)As a typographer, I am interested in everything that relates to reading and writing. While I am writing this, summer in Germany (2018) is almost over, one thing that belongs to summer and holidays for me is writing postcards. So I thought why not make a new Typographic Postcard — And this is what this Kickstarter is about; creating Typographic Postcard #28 WISH YOU WERE HERE.

My goal with this project is to create a valuable and affordable work that can reach as many people as possible. The more backers who support the project, the more space there is to create and share more.

A few years ago, I sent out this picture about type on keyboard-keys and since then I have always wanted to use this in a small piece about Typographic Postcards. So the first stretch goal is to produce a small booklet (remember booklets in CD's?) about Typographic Postcards.

Stretchgoal #1 (reached)- 99 Backers - booklet about Typographic Postcards
Stretchgoal #1 (reached)- 99 Backers - booklet about Typographic Postcards
  • Stretchgoal #2 (198 Backers or 3000€): special edition of WISH YOU WERE HERE. The card is going to be based on the original, finished with either 💎 holographic or 🌟 gold foil on the front. Only available through Kickstarter.
  • Stretchgoal #3 ???: I am looking forward to your suggestions in the comments. See →Update #4 to make suggestions.

PS: Because of shipping (weight) restrictions stretch-goal-extras are only available with rewards of 20€ or higher. Sorry.

Shipping

All Rewards ship from Frankfurt am Main, Germany to any location in the world. Your reward will be carefully packaged in a protective and reusable envelop. Rewards of 20 or more Postcards ship in a very strong cardboard envelope as pictured below. All rewards ship with priority mail. As soon as the shipment arrives in your country, it will be dispatched to and delivered to your door by your local postal service (i.e. USPS in U.S.A., AUSPOST in Australia, etc.). From the last Typographic Postcard Campaign I found these average shipping times:

  • Germany: 1-2 days
  • Europe: 1-7 days
  • U.S.A. / Canada: 7-21 days
  • Asia / Pacific: 7-28 days

The Back

The backside of a postcard is very important. Regular postcards have "address - lines", but I am not a fan of "address - lines". For me they are always too short, there is always one line missing. When it comes to world wide addresses one size does not fit all. Also I think everybody should be free to use the card horizontally, vertically or diagonally or upside down - right to left etc. So I leave as much space as possible for you to be creative.

But I put some tiny information on the back about the postcard. It says the title of the card, for example, Typographic Postcard #27 "I WAS HERE" followed by a short description: "The image on this postcard renders the object at its actual size. This postcard was printed 201(X) in Germany. The print run of this edition is one thousand. Find out more about Harald and visit his website: HARALDGEISLER.COM/POSTCARDS". Then it is followed by the same information in German. The number (here #27) is also noted. If the card is a sticker, it will also have a note on the back (#27 & #15 AUTOBAHN are stickers.) The English text is set in Helvetica and German in Times.

Here is the back with size references:

How will the funding be used?

Most of the funding goes to printing, packaging and shipping the cards, a bit to taxes, a little bit to processing credit card payments (3%) and a tiny bit to Kickstarter for creating this awesome platform (5%).

In general, I like my work to be accessible to everyone, so the rewards are calculated to make a little plus and no minus. If you want to support me as an artist, I recommend getting a higher priced reward (i.e. everything above 20€) or to simply add a tip to your pledge.

Timeframe

All the artwork work is done, the files for the printer are ready - I just need to know how many postcards I should order and how much shipping material. After the Kickstarter Campaign is over it takes about 14 days for the funding to arrive in my account. Then I will place the order at the print shop, which will take another week, during which I can prepare the shipping (printing shipping labels and order enough packaging material). After the postcards arrive, it will take another 5 days to package everything and have it picked up by the postman. So 26 days after the campaign ends the rewards should be in transit to you!

  • 60 days campaign
  • 14 days processing payment / collecting addresses from backers
  • 7 days printing cards / preparing shipping
  • 5 days packaging rewards

How did it all start?

The first THANK YOU Card was printed in 2010. Instead of a business card, I wanted a simple card, which I could also give to friends.

Typographic Postcard #1 THANK YOU (2012)
Typographic Postcard #1 THANK YOU (2012)

The design is inspired by the annual Typographic Wall Calendar, which I have produced since 2009.

As a friend of mine went to hospital, I felt the need for an original GET WELL card.

Typographic Postcard #3 GET WELL (2014)
Typographic Postcard #3 GET WELL (2014)

With the next birthday coming up, I thought how great it would be to have a typographic birthday card, which eventually became this simple CAKE on pink background card:

Typographic Postcard #4 CAKE (2014)
Typographic Postcard #4 CAKE (2014)

To me, a postcard is an everyday object, that I relate to writing and holidays. Even though I find myself receiving fewer and fewer handwritten letters, at every vacation spot, every museum store and every train station one will find postcards.

Typographic Postcard #21 POSTCARD (2015)
Typographic Postcard #21 POSTCARD (2015)

Sometimes I think that the contemporary form of a postcard is posting a holiday picture on Facebook. With the possibility to send SMS, email and to post to social networks from everywhere, the usability of a postcard seems questionable. But maybe its charm and value is in the postcard's casualness and non-urgent character.

Typographic Postcard #12 SENT FROM MY PHONE (2014)
Typographic Postcard #12 SENT FROM MY PHONE (2014)

Do you remember the first time you read the sentence "Sent from my iPhone"?

Typographic Detail: Typographic Postcard #21 "SENT FROM MY PHONE" is set in original Apple keyboard keys made between 1989 to 1992 in Ireland. It is easy to spot Apple keys from their typography. The letters are positioned in the lower left and not on the upper left like most PC keyboards. Instead of an extended upright type with a rather static appeal, the typeface used here is condensed and cursive which gives the keys a fast look.

As a typographer I am interested in everything that relates to reading and writing. The end of handwriting looms, but somehow out of sight. The typewriter was invented in 1714 and it took more than a quarter of a millennium to be seen as a serious threat to the technique of handwriting. The postcard is an invention made in the late 19th century, introduced about 150 years after the typewriter.

"Words have no size"

There is a quote from Ed Ruscha that I like very much:

“Books had to do a great deal with my art. I selected words that I wanted to put into a picture. And I knew that these words were not tied to any particular size. If you see a picture of an apple, you know what size that apple is, because we know what size an apple is. But a word had no size.”

— Ed Ruscha (Interview at Louisiana Channel - January 2016)

A photo can be enlarged or shrunk to any size. The image on the postcard renders the object at its actual size. The background of the Typographic Postcard #1 THANK YOU is a cutting mat with a 5mm grid to revise the scale of the depicted.I believe that rendering the depicted in actual size makes it easier for the viewer to relate to its original size.

The pictures are taken from above with a special reproduction lens to reduce distortion. Shadow and Perspective are two compositional tools for the photographer. I try to remove these two from the image and put the fact in the background that the picture is taken with a camera. First I try to take as much distance from the object as possible, this way all sides of each key are visible. With evenly lighting I remove shadows. The outcome is a picture with little to no visible perspective or shadow. By making the picture seem as neutral as possible, I hope that the viewer refers to the work as a picture rather than a photograph.

Writing Objects

Typographic Postcard #11 SATOR Square (2014)
Typographic Postcard #11 SATOR Square (2014)

The SATOR Square is a latin Palindrome. The keys read the same forwards and backwards, from bottom to top and in reverse. As a result the SATOR Square evokes a calming sense of order and complete symmetry. The earliest datable square was found in the ruins of Pompeii that was buried in the ash of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 almost 2000 years ago.

The SATOR Square is one of the first keyboard key objects I made. You can find out more about them here →https://haraldgeisler.com/2014/12/18/sator-square/.

Risks and challenges

Every artistic project bears risks. Every project is new and brings up unforeseeable risks and challenges both technically and artistically. I have published comparable projects (Typographic Postcards, Typographic Wall Calendar 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016) so I know about the artistic, logistical and technical pitfalls to avoid. The research and preparation that I already made for this project, assures me that I am able of complete this project within the projected timeframe.
