This project is about creating a notepad inspired by the typography and design of the classic Mac OS user interface. From original screenshots I redrew and carefully vectorised the buttons and bitmap-type.

My name is Harald, I am a typographer living in Frankfurt, Germany and I enjoy doing projects on Kickstarter that are related to reading and writing. Actually: HOORAY! this is my 10th typography project on Kickstarter! In past projects like the Albert Einstein font or the Sigmund Freud Typeface I took handwriting and made it accessible to use within the computer. Every day we encounter computer windows that demand to be read. But these windows have no physical presence. I like the idea that with this project these become accessible for writing with a pen.

Chicago Typography

The typeface used throughout the classic Mac OS system in buttons, menus and dialogs is called Chicago. It was designed as a bitmap font, which means it was drawn in pixels for specific screen sizes (e.g. 12pt), whereas todays fonts are rather stored in curves that can be scaled to any size.

Chicago was used up until Mac OS 7.6  (1984 - 1997). The font and most of the other, now iconic imagery was designed by Susan Kare in the 1980’s.

In an article regarding Macintosh typefaces published 1991 in Electronic Publishing, type designers Charles A. Bigelow and Kris Holmes note:

"Macintosh Chicago is a distinctive design. There are few faces quite like it in traditional typography, even among so-called “display” faces, used for headlines and titling. Because Chicago is deeply integrated into the Macintosh System, used in menus, titles, etc., it is a fundamental part of the look of the Macintosh."

Prototype Notepad

I wanted to have a simple notepad with a design that goes together with the way I work, which is a lot with the computer.

Because the prototype had to be produced in offset printing, which requires a large minimum quantity to order, I produced more than I needed. I started giving samples to friends and colleagues. For a "simple notepad" the feedback was surprisingly good: people liked it and came back for more.

At the moment I am using them myself on a daily basis. I write on 3-4 notepads simultaneously and it has become a very pleasant way to keep track of the different projects I am working on.

This Kickstarter is about a second production run and to make this design available to a wider audience.

Reward

Pledge 10€ and receive 3 notepads. If you like to get more pads, simply add multiples to your pledge (i.e. 6 pads = 20€, 30 pads 100€ etc… if you order multiples, I will cover the additional shipping)

3 Notepads (150 pages in total) are about 1,8 cm thick and weigh about 400 grams (each 133 grams.)

Risks and challenges

Every artistic project bears risks. Every project is new and brings up unforeseeable risks and challenges both technically and artistically. I have published seven comparable projects (Typographic Postcards I + II, Typographic Wall Calendar 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016) which involved design and production, packaging and shipping of printed goods, so I know about the artistic, logistical and technical pitfalls to avoid. The research and preparation that I already made for this project, for example producing a prototype of the notepad, assures me that I am able of complete this project within the projected timeframe.

Thank you for your support.
