Every day we encounter computer windows that demand to be read. But these windows have no physical presence. With this project I want these windows to become a physical presence, so that you can write on them and make them pop up everywhere…
…for example in your fridge.
Hi, my name is Harald — I'm bringing handwriting to the digital world…
As typographer I am interested in everything that relates to reading and writing. In other Kickstarter campaigns I created digital typefaces (fonts) based on historic handwriting (Sigmund Freud typeface a letter to your shrink, Albert Einstein font, Martin Luther font) which enable you to write like another person on your computer or mobile device.
…and the digital world to writing with the hand.
To me this project is a counterbalance to my activities in font making. It is the follow-up project to the Cancel / Save Notepad (also on Kickstarter) where I wanted to create a notepad that accompanies my daily work and activities (which are a lot on screen), the design is inspired by the typography and design of the classic Mac OS user interface:
It is far more expensive than I thought to produce sticky notes - and that is why I am here on Kickstarter: to get your support to upfront the initial production costs of the work. In return you will receive these exclusive notes first and at a much cheaper price…honestly I am not sure if I am going to sell them later anywhere at all. So this Kickstarter might be the only way to get your hands on the design. If this interests you, pick one of the following rewards:
- One • 3€ • receive 1 Cancel / OK Sticky Notes block with 100 sheets.
- Three • 9€ • receive 3 Cancel / OK Sticky Notes blocks.
- Six • 15€ • receive 6 Cancel / OK Sticky Notes blocks.
- Office Supply • 25€ • receive 3 Cancel / Save Notepads and 6 Cancel / OK Sticky Notes blocks
- Big Supply • 45€ • receive 6 Cancel / Save Notepads and 10 Cacel / OK Sticky Notes blocks
- Digital & Analog • 50€ • Recieve the Office Supply Reward and a Font of your choice from my library (e.g. Freud, Einstein…)
- T-Shirt • 80€ • receive a Cancel / Save / OK Shirt of your choice and content of the Office Supply reward

Windows on a screen have no size reference in real world and can vary from machine to machine. I tried out many different sizes and slightly different positions to match the look and feel of a pop-up-notification with the printed design:
About Chicago Typography
Chicago was a typeface used throughout the classic Mac OS system in buttons, menus and dialogs up until Mac OS 7.6 (1984 - 1997). The font and most of the other, now iconic imagery was designed by Susan Kare in the 1980’s.
In an article regarding Macintosh typefaces published 1991 in Electronic Publishing, type designers Charles A. Bigelow and Kris Holmes note:
"Macintosh Chicago is a distinctive design. There are few faces quite like it in traditional typography, even among so-called “display” faces, used for headlines and titling. Because Chicago is deeply integrated into the Macintosh System, used in menus, titles, etc., it is a fundamental part of the look of the Macintosh."
Bigelow and Holmes were contracted to update the Chicago typeface. Personally I prefer the original design by Kare.

2000 pcs. - Recycled paper instead of new paper
The Sticky Notes are produced in high quality offset print in Germany. The product of the forerunner campaign the Cancel / Save Notepad was printed on recycled paper. Unfortunately it is far more expensive to print on recycled paper than on new paper. A higher print-run lowers the costs — if the production run crosses 2000 pieces It would be possible to produce the Cancel / OK Sticky notes on recycled paper and climate neutral.
All rewards ship from Germany in a protective envelop or cardboard box. Shipping varies based on the weight of your reward. Please note that only the higher reward tiers ship with registered mail and are online trackable. If not noted in the reward description items will ship with regular mail that is not trackable — if your shipment is lost, it is lost. If tracking is important to you write me up before the campaign ends and I can add tracking to your shipment which is usually about 7-9€ for international and 2-4€ for national shipments. From the past campaigns I know that in average 1 of 200 shipments get lost with unregistered mail.
Local pickup in my studio in Frankfurt (60311 near Hauptwache) is also possible, you will then receive one extra Cancel / OK Sticky Note block for saving shipping and packaging costs :-)
The design is ready, so basically I just need to know how many I should order - which will be clear by the end of the campaign.
Campaign phase: 60 days
Production phase: After the campaign ends it takes up to two weeks until the funds arrive in my account. Then I can place the order, production time is 2-3 weeks. During that time I can prepare the shipments (order packaging material, print address labels).
Packaging and Shipping: Once the order arrives (and the prints are as expected) I can start packaging and schedule a pickup for the rewards.
Delivery: All rewards will be delivered through your national post service (USPS in the US, AUSPOST in Australia, Deutsche Post in Germany and so on…) Depending on your distance to Germany you can expect your reward between: 2-21 days. If your reward includes tracking you will be able to track your reward online.

Risks and challenges
Every artistic project bears risks. Every project is new and brings up unforeseeable risks and challenges both technically and artistically. I have published eight comparable projects (Cancel/ Save Notepad, Typographic Postcards I + II, Typographic Wall Calendar 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016) which involved design and production, packaging and shipping of printed goods, so I know about the artistic, logistical and technical pitfalls to avoid. The research and preparation that I already made for this project assures me that I am able of complete this project within the projected timeframe.
