"…stunning reinterpretation of a calendar is a masterful example of how a designer can completely flip a genre signifier on its head. Geisler reimagines calendars in order to change the way we visualize time, and in turn, redefines what it means to save the date."
Mike McGregor, Kickstarter, Brooklyn

"This weird mosaic of keys is the perfect calendar for the writer or mechanical keyboard lover in your life"
John BrownleeFastCo Design

"Harald Geisler doesn’t scream calendar but is a fun print for your wall with a gentle nod to the year."
Caroline Williamson, Design Milk

"Loved Harald Geisler’s wall calendar made out of keyboard keys"
Maria Popova, Brainpickings.org @brainpicker

"The more I look at this poster, the more in awe of it I am… it’s a complete revision of the way we construct time, month by month, day by day. To see a year laid that way is somehow frightening and optimistic."
Elizabeth Kiefer, Editor at Fab, NYC

Hi!

…my name is Harald, I am a typographer based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. I would like your help to create the 7th Edition Typographic Wall Calendar for 2016. This is the (1,2,3,4…) 5th time I am kickstarting this calendar. With the Sigmund Freud Typeface, the Albert Einstein font and Typographic Postcards this is my 8th typography project on Kickstarter.

The composition for the 2016 calendar is done, it is made of 2016 used keyboard keys, arranged line by line - when read out loud the text of the key spells out every day of the upcoming year 2016. This is what it looks like:

The print is 84 x 118 cm and reproduces the keys in original size. I already ordered a test print to check all the details before I send it to the offset printing…

Now I would like to know: how many should I print?
Now I would like to know: how many should I print?

Through Kickstarter I got amazing feedback for the past editions of this work. In the last five years I had the chance to share this calendar with over 500 backers from 43 countries around the globe, form Australia, Brazil to Iceland, Israel, Japan to Russia, South-Africa and New Zealand… It made me very happy to see my work travel into backers' homes and workspaces and becoming a part of everyday live.

 STRETCHGOALS

43 countries sounds like a lot… but how about 50 or 200?

Stretchgoal A

If this campaign reaches 50 countries or 200 cities I will add one extra print of the 2016 typographic wall calendar to each shipment. So all backers will receive two calendars!

How do I find out if the stretchgoal is met? Please after you have backed leave a comment with your country to the project or send me a private message through Kickstarter.

What is this Typographic Wall Calendar?

The calendar is made of two-thousand and sixteen used keyboard keys, or every year the number that enumerates the year. The keys are arranged manually in a grid ( 38 x 53 + 2 = 2016 keys) to write out all days of the year 2016. The print of the calendar reproduces the keys in original size (1:1). It is printed in Offset on heavy paper.

The initial idea for the Typographic Wall Calendar came from a daydream. In this dream I imagined a person in a random office typing in front of a computer. The person writes letters, for example to customers. On every letter the person writes the date, a repetitive part of the job. I imagined that as the person types, the pressed keys would (somehow) sum up or accumulate. Not only would the keys be counted but also collected, ordered and stored. Over days and weeks it would become a mountain of keys. This "mountain of keys" then became the Typographic Wall Calendar.

Is it a real calendar? How do you read it? Yes! It is a real, usable calendar. This typography calendar makes finding dates a fun and creative process. If you read the keys from left to right, they show each day of the year in sequence: JANUARY FRI 01 SAT 02 SUN 03 etc. You can think of it like a string of all dates in the year. After a bit of practice, you can orient yourself quickly within the grid.

To me even more than being a calendar, the image is a representation of time. If you would like to dive deeper into the Typographic Wall Calendar, you can download this →PDF.

OBJECTS— the SATOR Square is a latin Palindrome. The keys read the same backwards and forwards, from bottom to top. As a result the SATOR Square evokes a calming sense of order and complete symmetry. The earliest datable square was found in the ruins of Pompeii that was buried in the ash of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 almost 2000 years ago.

Risks and challenges

Every artistic project bears risks. Every project is new and brings up unforeseeable risks and challenges both technically and artistically. I have published four comparable projects (Typographic Wall Calendar 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014) so I know about the artistic, technical and logistic pitfalls to avoid. The research and preparation that I already made for this project, assures me that I am able of complete this project within the projected timeframe.

Thank you for your support.
