Hello, my name is Anouk Kruithof and I am a Netherlands born artist living in New York. For almost 12 years I have been exploring and questioning the picture-plane, image, materiality, physicality and philosophy of the medium photography. My multi-layered, mostly idea-based interdisciplinary projects take the form of photographs; photographic, video or spatial installations; text; sculpture; take-away ephemera and performance. Besides all that I am a frenetic artistbook-maker! I've made 9 books so far, which u can check out here:
- the black hole
- becoming blue
- playing borders (this contemporary state of mind)
- the daily exhaustion
- happy birthday to you
- a head with wings
- untitled (I‘ve taken to many photo’s / I’ve never taken a photo)
- the most recent one, the bungalow
I started Stresspress.biz last year, its a versatile publishing platform that includes my various book projects, some of my critical writings about artists’ books and my short fictional stories. Over the coming years Stresspress.biz will develop into a platform for collaboration with other writers and artists on publishing in the extended field.
I've been working on AUTOMAGIC since May 2011. It will be an extensive book which contains images and text out of the past 12 years of my "automagic archive". The book does not attempt to have a clear narrative, thus this will be created by the viewer from their own memories and associations towards the open-image stories and stimulated by text notes and short fictional stories.
AUTOMAGIC refers to the unexplainable behaviour of something
At this moment there’s a lot of research about how taking photos changes our perspective in memory. We’re outsourcing our memory to the cards in our camera’s and our smart phones, and the interruption of attention when taking a picture can also hinder our future retrospection. I am pretty guilty of those thoughts, because I am always framing the world and always have been, since the moment I got my first camera as a child. My memories might not be rooted in my mind as actual memories of events, but unreal memories created by taking photos, looking at them and reworking them.
My book AUTOMAGIC is an exploration and demonstration, which represents a transformed image archive by means of analogue photo-montages, screenshots, reproductions, editing and the addition of text. AUTOMAGIC will be hardcover US letter size, almost 2 inch thick book, consisting of many different chapters printed on different paper. The diversity of chapters and topics, the tactility of the paper feel will make of this book a layered sculpture.
a limbo between fact and fiction
there is no appropriation in this book
This book shows the adventure, the sheer infinity of possibilities of the medium photography as a vehicle of resourcefulness and the computer and human mind as processors of ways to look at our world.
The photos out of which AUTOMAGIC exists were made in:
Turkey, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Jamaica, Panama, Australia, Korea, Morocco, Egypt, Tunesia, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Joshua Tree Park, Woodstock, Syracuse, Boston, Richmond, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Beetsterzwaag, Paris, France, Sardinia, Venice, Italy, Barcelona, Spain, Belgium, Berlin, Germany, Switzerland, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Austria, Prague, Slovakia, Slovenia, Stockholm, London, Leeds, Bristol, Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and the OCEANS...
A clear conceptual starting point in the process making this book was to deliberately mix all origins (date and place taken) in an attempt to erase geographical locations and its borders and unify people with different religion, culture, age, gender and nationality.
A book as holistic idea
As u might know or not know, artistbook-making is a very unprofitable thing to do. I love bookmaking, that’s why I've made 9 books so far in collaboration with different independent publishers from all over the world, and as well self-published 2 of them. Every time I am thinking of producing a book there is this huge hesitation on the...
“ok where do I get the money from to realize this book-dream”
… I will self-publish AUTOMAGIC under stresspress.biz and I know this thick book with more than 1000 pages, the high-end features, such as the printing on different pages, the proper binding and the painting of the 3 paper sizes of this book (the book becomes a yellow rectangle block-object with nothing on it) will have high costs. Not to even talk about paying my collaborators, such as interns, the graphic designer, translators, text-editors I work with, studio-rent, flight-tickets, material and so on…
I have never created a Kickstarter before, but I've supported some fundraiser-campaigns of others I encountered through friends, acquaintances and colleagues. I am doing this Kickstarter campaign, to raise money for the production of the book AUTOMAGIC. If I exceed my goal of raising 25.000 euro, I will use the additional proceeds for the development of stresspress.biz as a publishing platform, which is needed too.
<< !! Without your help AUTOMAGIC won’t become reality !! >>
I am super grateful for your support!
thank you very much!
AUTOMAGIC will be published in an edition of 500 or 1000 depending on the requests through this campaign and the books will be numbered and "KISSED-INSTEAD-OF-SIGNED" on request.
Most likely published under stresspress.biz but I am open for collaborations with publishers as well. It will depend on possibilities for collaboration, so let's wait a bit and see...
Underneath you get an impression how this looks. For Kickstarter backers their AUTOMAGIC books will be "KISSED-INSTEAD-OF-SIGNED" for sure!
I GOT MANY QUESTIONS REGARDING THE BUDGET. I got questions like: "25.000 EURO IS A HUGE AMOUNT FOR JUST A BOOK"
underneath I ll explain the costs of this book. Publishing a book of the size US letter / A4 about 2 inches thick and 1000 up to 1500 pages is quite an object, not to compare with any of my previous books in terms of size. I will work with a high-end printer and binder and my hero graphic designer: Christoph Nussli.
material costs: 1000
?? costs for : storage, a company sending out the books, mailing costs
quite a lot of the money collected over Kickstarter will flow back to the backers in terms of the rewards, prints, books, Skype-calls, meetings.. To mail the rewards to everyone and making them costs money too so basically you have to minus those from the amount of 25.000 euro as well, in the sense of what's left after those expenses.
I want to exceed my goal of 25.000 euro, because with that amount I can't even make the book, I will because I will invest myself and/or find another source to fill any gaps.
I hope this clarifies something for people who don't know how expensive and not lucrative artist-book-making is.
Risks and challenges
I have been working on AUTOMAGIC for over almost four years now. Of course not continuously full-time, but besides the texts and the re-visited graphic design I am pretty far in the process of realization. Having self-published two of my previous books ("happy birthday to you" and "untitled (i've taken too many photos / i've never taken a photo") I have the necessary experience to accomplish this project and do not anticipate any problems.
The goal is to publish AUTOMAGIC at the NYC artbookfair half september 2015 or at OFFPRINT during Paris Photo at the end of November 2015.
All the rewards, which do not include the book AUTOMAGIC itself, will be shipped within a month after the campaign is closed. The rewards where the book AUTOMAGIC is included, will be shipped within a month after the publishing date.
All AUTOMAGIC special edition prints, which will be included in most of the awards are made ONLY FOR KICKSTARTER BACKERS OF THIS CAMPAIGN and those prints will be "kissed-instead-of-signed, like the book itself will be, too!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
