New Urban Adventures
We have already made two Wundor City Guides – to Tokyo and Mumbai – but we want to go further. With your support we can cover the globe.
The next three cities we have in our sights are LA, Mexico City and Berlin. By supporting this Kickstarter project, you will help to make our next three guides a reality.
Our innovative guides feature wonderful photography, illustrations and travel writing, from contributors based in, or with a deep knowledge of, each city. Our contributors include novelists, poets, journalists, and photographers. Many of them have won awards for their work.
Our books are made with premium photobook paper, bound by card covers and glossy dust jackets. They are made to be treasured for a lifetime. They are substantial enough to sit well on a coffee table – but more importantly they are the right size to fit in a tote bag or a rucksack.
Each contains over 100 beautiful photographs and illustrations, travel writing, advice on geographical and cultural navigation, a directory of the best places to visit and much more.
Wundor’s city guides are designed to give you a way into the real city you are visiting. We are bombarded with so many observations and images relating to the world’s urban environments, many of which centre around commerce and the obvious sights and attractions. The same carefully styled interiors and shots of flat whites abound in magazines around the world, tricking us into thinking that all cities are essentially becoming the same place. They aren’t.
Our guides offer up authentic insights and views on each city. Beautiful images take you through the backstreets and capture inspiring details and moments that reveal a sense of time and place. They offer writing that will introduce you to the most authentic places - not just the best tourist destinations.
Our recommendations of galleries, restaurants, shops and more are based on quality, not always on what happens to be fashionable. You will be introduced to real people from these cities, and learn about them from the inside-out.
Wundor City Guides are for the traveller who wants to go beyond the obvious and make their own adventure, and for the reader who is looking for inspiration wherever they are in the world.
With your help we can continue on our mission to explore the world, and to celebrate the wonders of travel by making books.
- Arrival and Home essays - two long-form pieces of writing that give you two perspectives: first that of a visitor; then that of a resident of the city. For Tokyo, the novelist Aoko Matsuda contributed a piece on her love for her hometown and the people who live there
- Navigation essay - in-depth advice on cultural and geographical navigation that will have you finding your way like a local
- Heart of the City, Wider City and Outer Limits - three photo-essays that showcase incredible photography from a top photographer based in the city. Beginning with the city's core, we take you through a variety of locations, ending out in its furthest reaches
- Directory - the best places to see and to visit. Think architecture, culture, nature, shops, cafés, eateries, restaurants, bars and hotels. Be inspired by our original section on cityscapes which are unique to each place
- People - meet ten characters from the city, featuring their portraits and comments on their hometown
- Many more photographs and illustrations throughout
Meet the Editor
Wundor City Guides are edited by author and photographer Matthew Smith, who is the founder of Wundor Editions. He is also a contributor to the books. Inspired by both the written word and the visual image, they are the perfect summation of what Wundor Editions represents, and of Matthew's creative philosophy. Watch the video above to hear him discuss the guides and what they mean to him.

Risks and challenges
We have successfully brought our Tokyo and Mumbai guides to market in 2017.
We have distribution in the UK and the US and our books are now sold at some of the best international bookshops, including Daunt, Magma and Stanfords in London and T Site Daikanyama in Tokyo.
We are a new company, but already we have a reliable procedure in place to complete each new city guide, and a clear record of successful publishing.
As soon as each book is received from the printers, it will be on its way to you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
