A mother hides her family from slavery in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The children have grown up with a tale of a man known as The Letter Carrier. As the legend goes, he roams the mountains looking for children to sell as slaves. Painted against this historical backdrop, it is a raw, mysterious, and interpretive fable. Told through a cappella song, using original folk music, spirituals and a score using only natural sounds.
Risks and challenges
Period films are always more complicated than contemporary. Being accurate to the time can be costly, so to attempt it on a low budget is ambitious! With building a trapper cabin, period costumes, set decoration and props we don't want to compromise accuracy and raw aesthetics. Luckily we have already started to assemble a team who are as equally passionate about the story as we are. Their belief, and yours, in our vision will inspire us to complete this challenging, exciting and ultimately fulfilling project, together.
The onus will really fall our team's shoulders to get the word out to all available local acting and music programs to source out the four siblings our story revolves around. Our campaign and project will be utilizing word of mouth and social media to get the casting notices out to the community here in Vancouver and neighbouring cities. We are confident that there is a wealth of hidden talent in the area waiting for the right opportunity.
Our Production schedule is very tight. Almost everyone currently signed onto the project are full time Cast and Crew on Network Television, meaning our shoot dates are dictated by the hiatus break that falls in mid April. This leaves us a very narrow window in which to shoot. Prep, therefore, is crucial and we plan to utilize every available moment to ensure that our shooting runs unhindered.
With just over a month and a half until Day 1 of shooting we have already started hiring our heads of department as well as having booked and confirmed a location. The casting process has begun and we would like to be completely cast by mid march- 1st of April at the latest.
Further more we intend to rehearse this script as though prepping for theatre. We're planning to rent a rehearsal space, map-out our set and spend a few days blocking the scenes with our cast in that venue. The rhythm of the dialogue and movement in this film is key and this setup will allow us to perfect it in advance. It will also allow us to build relationships between our cast and crew that will assist in a family dynamic on and off camera.
We will invite our technical crew in to watch the blocking and rehearse the camera work. It is this forethought in pre-production that will ensure that every moment of shooting time is used to its fullest potential.
All our music is original and meant to be sung live. Rather than using studio recorded tracks and score, we want to record it all live, on location, during the filming. To achieve this, we will require a very talented cast and an expert sound department.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
