a. favorite design is moving to Albany Park in Chicago! Our new space is on the first floor with its own entrance. This will allow us to offer community workshops, have a small retail area in front filled with our goods and other letterpress artist goods, vintage finds and stationery type products. Our main focus will be creating a community letterpress space and sharing our love of snail mail.
Hi! I’m Amber Favorite, creator of a. favorite design, a letterpress print shop on the north side of Chicago. Our mission at a. favorite design is to encourage long distance warm fuzzies through snail mail. All our goods are handmade by a small and caring staff.
I created a. favorite design in 2005. After leaving the corporate world and branching out as a freelance designer, I discovered community letterpress classes. I was immediately smitten. I’ve always had a passion for design and typography; letterpress printing became a magical, creative world filled with both. I quickly learned people liked my style so I created a line of greeting cards & stationery. In June of 2007 I acquired a 1913 C & P hand-fed press and I haven’t looked back. My part-time passion quickly became my full-time gig.
Until now, my focus has been creating greeting cards. Each card is lovingly fed through my antique press two to four times. The process is time consuming but I am committed to craftsmanship and feel the beautiful impression of each piece is worth it. My goods are truly a labor of love. I believe in the magic of snail mail and the idea that a long distance warm fuzzy can change someone's day and maybe even their life.
While I love creating greeting cards I’ve been daydreaming about a space where I can offer workshops, a creative space that will inspire people of all ages, a space where I can share my goods as well as help others create. I want to offer letterpress printing workshops, letter writing workshops, handwriting tutorials, as well as vintage office finds and greeting cards for every occasion. I want to share my passion for all things paper and printing with my community. I want others to feel the excitement, creativity and magic of letterpress like I did over 12 years ago.
In order to create my dream workshop space I will need to move my current studio. Moving antique printing presses, paper cutters and plate makers is a huge undertaking. Professional equipment movers will need to be hired, as well as movers to safely transport thousands of greeting cards and envelopes.
I also need a tabletop printing press that is safe for everyone to use. This press will be dedicated to our students for learning the art of letterpress printing.
I’ve found a perfect first floor space in the Albany Park neighborhood. At the moment it’s being gutted and needs a lot of love. In addition to moving and purchasing a new press, we need to purchase new light fixtures, paint the space and build some shelving. We’ll also need additional work tables, stools for our students & more type for classes. All of these things add up pretty quickly. That’s where you come in. Just like one warm fuzzy can make someone’s day, one contribution can make a big difference in our little paper community. I’m offering a great variety of letterpress goods, workshops, events and even a press in exchange for investing in our community workshop studio.
Here’s my plan:
–get the keys to the new space! Start painting, electrical work, build an office area, build shelving and create a card wall.
–start moving in product, organize, prepare for presses & equipment
–move all our equipment to new space
–host opening party
–workshop schedule sign up begins!
What you can expect – Rewards will start shipping in October, while rewards involving workshops will be offered dates and times closer to November.
Here’s where the money will go:
equipment moving - $3,000
tabletop press - $2,500
improvements to space - $4,500
general movers - $3,000
wood type - $1,500
stools and tables - $2,000
You’re probably wondering why I want to take on such a big endeavor. I’ll be honest. Creating is a passion and inspiring others is my life’s purpose. I love helping people create and dream. I want to build an environment people want to be in, a place people feel comfortable to express themselves and play, a space where you’re able to get so involved in a project you don’t even realize an hour has gone by. A space where your hands are busy and mind can wander. I want to create a magical community of paper lovers who believe in the magic of snail mail. This new shop & letterpress print space is the start to making my daydreams reality. Thanks for investing in my community dream!

Risks and challenges
There is always a chance for mishaps during moves. Especially when dealing with several tons of brittle cast iron equipment. We are hiring the best heavy equipment movers in the Chicago area. We expect our move to go smoothly and all three presses, the paper cutter and platemaker to arrive safe and sound. We are also dealing with construction on the new space. While our lease starts August 15th, our old lease doesn't expire until September 30th. We scheduled the overlap as a cushion. We don't plan on it taking one and a half months to move but just in case the construction isn't complete or there are any hold ups. We have some time. We intend to stick with our expected ship dates in October for rewards. We create and ship thousands of greeting cards weekly, it shouldn't be a problem.
That all being said...Please keep in mind when dealing with construction and moving, dates shift, stuff happens. We'll keep you abreast of any issues.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
