About

 

Ethos is a stand alone 3rd person ARPG coupled with a Sandbox MMO and then finished of with a Battle Arena. Pursue Immortality in the ARPG, build an Empire in the Sandbox or make your mark on history in the Arena...the Choice is yours.

Ethos consists of four distinctly different experiences within one game. We refer to these four different methods to play Ethos as modules.

The ‘Immortals’ module at its core, is a third person action role playing game, taking cues from the Dark Souls trilogy.

Next up is the ‘Sandbox'. In this module you will be taking the character you created in the Immortals module, or you can create an entirely new one, to explore what most would call the game’s overworld.

Simply put, the ‘Vendor’ module is a business sim/shop owner. Over time, however, a Vendor may progress to a chain store owner or much further beyond that.

The fourth of the modules is the ‘Monarch’ module. This is where you’ll build cities and towns in the aforementioned realm, 4X style.

 The Battle Arena isn’t a fifth module, but it does throw another playing style into the mix. This part of the Ethos world is an integral part of the Sandbox and Monarch modules, acting more as a sort of ‘core module’ than anything else, and is centered on individual and team based PvP.

All of these components work seamlessly with each other to create a truly new and unique gameplay experience. 

All of us wants something different from the games we play. Some of us are warriors, others are providers, and yet more are strategists, among other roles. But no matter our differences, Ethos was designed to provide each player with a unique and everlasting experience. 

The Immortals Module

The ‘Immortals’ module at its core, is a third person action role playing game, taking cues from the Dark Souls trilogy. First you will create and customize your character and then ready up your sword and shield, your bow and quiver, or your staff, for the journey. 

During this journey, you will explore a highly intricate combat system, using melee and ranged techniques as well as magic to thwart your enemies. You can prove your moxi alone, or have up to 4 player cooperative play. All the while developing your build as you see fit. 

You'll encounter a variety of monsters, mobs, aggressive NPCs and some not-so-aggressive ones too, in a variety of different settings. 

Every kingdom will be home to a single Immortal, each preceded by their second in command. You’ll traverse each and every kingdom, and face off against them one by one. Only by defeating them all, will you be granted the title of Immortal.

The Sandbox Module

Next up is the ‘Sandbox'. In this module you will be taking the character you created in the Immortals module, or you can create a new one, to explore what most would call the game’s overworld.

This overworld is a sprawling yet beautifully crafted realm created mostly (and eventually entirely) by you the player in the Monarchs module.

If you don’t care much for the domestic side of things, and you’re looking to spill blood outside of the Immortals RPG, then take on the mantle of a Mercenary, a soldier for hire to the highest bidder. Alternatively, you can align yourself with the local government and fight for whatever they may deem ‘justice’. 

Once you are in the Sandbox, you will want to make yourself some money. Grab a pickaxe and head down into the mines, or find a spade and get to farming. Or just go and kill something and trade for gear or gold.  

Once you have some money or raw materials, or some combination of the two at your disposal, you’ll have plenty more doors open up for you.


One of the most intriguing ways to earn a living in the Sandbox is by become a bandit or bounty hunter. That's right, in the World of Ethos you can steal from other players that travel alone or foolishly trust you. 

 But beware robbing another player will put a bounty on your head, then you will have to deal with the bounty hunters guild. Joining the bounty hunters guild will grant you a proximity radar of sorts that will alert you when a known criminal is nearby.    

But in the end, no matter what you do, the choice is always yours. So get out there and write your name in the history books of Ethos

The Vendor's Module

Simply put, the ‘Vendor’ module is a business sim/item shop owner. Over time, however, a Vendor may progress to own multiple stores. At the beginning, you’ll acquire raw materials and items by various means, and sell them in your shop.

There are two ways to approach this, the first of which is to be a vendor yourself: the standalone Vendor module will grant you this at the beginning. You’ll start off with some capital, then it's up to you to use it wisely.

As a shop owner, your shop will have to specialise in something, which means taking up a profession. You might become a blacksmith or an armourer, and forge iron or steel into deadly weapons, shields or armor. Or use your newly found arcane knowledge to unlock more spells, to imbue staves and wands with mystical power.

The other way to run your business is to hire an NPC to run your store. You traverse the sandbox yourself, acquiring raw materials, ensuring you’re always fully stocked, and using the spoils from the sandbox to keep your shop going. All the while your NPC employee runs the shop as you direct him.

The Monarchs Module

The fourth of the modules is the ‘Monarch’ module. This is where you’ll build cities and towns in the aforementioned realm, 4X style.

To be clear, combat will not be traditionally 4X - conflict between empires will be settled using alternative measures, which we’ll get to in a moment.

Every single settlement that wasn’t there when the game went live, be it a city, a town, or a village, will have been built and managed by other players, often the very same players who you once passed in the streets of the sandbox, or fought alongside in the Immortals module.

Monarchs can build and manage their empires however they may wish within their territory. And after you’ve built your city, you can begin attracting other players to it, and challenge other Monarchs to battle in the Battle Arena, in order to expand your empire.

The job of Monarch is not to be taken lightly. Being a Monarch means managing an empire. You will be responsible for everything that goes on within your kingdom. Everything from taxes to research and development along with security and building the necessary infrastructure will be squarely on your shoulders.

The Battle Arena

The Battle Arena isn’t a fifth module, but it does throw another playing style into the mix. This part of the Ethos world is an integral part of the Sandbox and Monarch modules, acting more as a sort of ‘core module’ than anything else, and is centered on individual and team based PvP.

We’re in the process of discussing objective based gameplay in this mode behind the scenes, and how to go about implementing it. We’ll have more for you on that as soon as possible, but for now, it’s just a fight to the death.

To clarify, any losses here or indeed anywhere else won’t result in permadeath. At the moment, we’re implementing death/revival conditions, but you won’t lose a thing for Battle Arena deaths, except for a few points on the board.

Deaths in Immortals or the Sandbox are another case entirely: all of your carried gold and XP gained since the last level is buried at the place of death, marked with a headstone. Find the headstone, and you get everything back. All you have to worry about is getting back to your stuff without dying a second time.

Meet The Team!

 

 

 If you didn’t think that was enough, every backer will receive access to the official playable demo of the game, as soon as it’s ready (estimated 09/2016). The demo will last around 60-90 minutes.

In this demo, you’ll make your way through a small kingdom, which we’ve designed specifically around introducing a player to every aspect of Ethos that we’ll have in place with maximum funding - and beyond.

 

 

Up until now, Ethos has been funded privately. We tried reaching out to private investors and publishers, but we always found it difficult to maintain creative control of the project. So in order to do this, we’re coming to you. This way, we get the game out to you as originally envisioned by us, without sacrificing our creativity or freedom.

By separating the game into these four (for now) pieces, we can bring four complete sections of the game to you as individual, interlocking pieces of a far greater whole.

 

$180,000 – Immortals module  

  • Immortals ARPG with six kingdoms in total.

$240,000 – Multiplayer

  • Seamless drop-in/drop-out co-op/vs-op multiplayer added to the Immortals module. The game was designed from the ground up to work in a multiplayer environment, so this transition is very important to us.

$420,000 – Vendor, Sandbox and Monarch modules (standalone)

  • Online, server capacity of 200-300 players. All playable as standalone games, but fully integrated with each other. Not integrated with Immortals module.
  • Unlocks Vendor, Sandbox, and Monarch module pledge rewards + the complete deluxe editions.

$500,000 – Battle Arena.

  • Battle other players with your Immortals/Sandbox character. Up to 64 players in two teams of 32.

$660,000 – Integrates all four modules and the battle arena into a single cohesive experience.

  • Completes the player-driven economy, bringing all modules to a launch-ready state with 200-300 players per server.

$840,000 – Immortals module with twelve kingdoms.

  • The Immortals module with double the content. Twelve kingdoms with Immortal bosses.

$1,200,000 – The Full Ethos Experience

  • The complete worldwide launch experience with scalable servers to accommodate all modules.

Additional funding beyond any individual goal - Marketing/Studio/Game(play) improvements  

  • If we don’t hit a particular goal, we’ll develop for the goal directly preceding that one, and using the remaining funds for improvements across the board. Once we have the necessary funds to to develop for the next goal, we will do so, likely in the same order. Our goal is to give you The Full Ethos experience, and then expand from there as we go.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Reaching the stretch goal of $420,000 will unlock the Vendor, Sandbox, and Monarch module pledge rewards, and all of the Deluxe Editions containing them

The Founders Guild: If you pledge $78 or more, you’ll be credited as a Founder and receive exclusive access to the Founders Guild, which will have social elements both in-game and across the game’s universe. You’ll also get a Founders skin in game, applicable to some of your items and possibly your user interface and HUD (TBD), and if you pledged for physical rewards, they’ll also have the Founders colour scheme.

The Launch Party: If we reach a total pledge amount of $500,000, we’ll be holding an exclusive launch party! Everybody who pledged at least $100 will be invited to attend, and it will take place at a venue somewhere in the United States. More details to follow if we reach that goal. (Flights and accommodation not included.)

 

 

 

Risks and challenges

Q: Previously, projects have failed due to mismanagement, misallocation of funds, or data loss. How would you avoid these issues?

A: Alan McGraw, the head of the studio, has an extensive background in project management having more than 25 years of running successful projects. He will ensure that the same is done for Ethos, and that everybody involved is where they need to be in terms of workflow.

A: Devlin Willis, the current lead developer, will ensure that these people are the best that can be on it. We employ versioning control for file management, and have robust protocols in place to determine who may access which files. Additionally, even more secure measures will be employed both on- and off-site; proper backup protocols are crucial to projects like this.

Q: A game of his calibre has never been attempted before, despite the vast amount of talent in the industry. What makes you so sure that you can even approach this?

A: Nobody on the team claims to be superior to anybody else out there. But the reason we think we can do something like this is for the same reason we’re here on Kickstarter, making this request to you: we’re not attached to a publisher or an investor. We have no reports to make, no obligation to repay anybody, except you, our backers. We can take more risks, grow as designers, and bring in the talent we need to achieve our goal.

Q: How will Ethos monetize?

A: Expect a hybrid approach, a far cry from the ‘pay-to-win’ model out there right now. There will be microtransactions for character customization, but you won’t be able to buy anything with real money that may put you ahead of the competition.
