As a feminist and a tarot reader, the way the gender binary is depicted on most decks and in most related materials has always bothered me. Why relegate women to second-tier royalty and motherhood roles? Even in imagery, these things matter, and I decided to create the deck I most wanted to see.
Out with all the kings and emperors and old gender roles! I want to create a deck where every figure depicted is female to reflect a world where women can do and be all things. I want women to be able to see themselves in all the cards, good and bad and everything in between.
There are other feminist tarot decks which take different approaches, but I didn't want to associate each card with famous figures and notable women. I wanted the imagery on these cards to depict ordinary women, diverse women, unique women.
My goal for this campaign is to fund the production of the first batch of decks including securing a UPC code and all that fun stuff. The images are all drawn, the cards are designed (including cue phrases for the upright and reversed meaning of each card), and they are being inked and colored as we speak. (The images on this page will be updated as the illustrations develop.) As far as the artwork is concerned, everything will be ready to go to print in time to ship decks to supporters in October, if not sooner.
I know with the help of tarot enthusiasts who care about gender equality, I can bring this project to life!
Risks and challenges
I have experience self-publishing coloring books, which in terms of design is a very similar process (pencil drawing, inked over, scanned and digitally finished, format for printing, send to publisher), but this is my first deck of cards. I think I've done the necessary research to establish proper cost and timeline, but there's always the chance for surprises.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
