WENG WENG IS GONE-GONE! MORE THAN 90% OF ALL KICKSTARTER PACKAGES HAVE BEEN POSTED

Haven't received your package yet? Please email me - andrewleavold@gmail.com - as soon as you can. One of two things may have happened…

1) We emailed you for your address, and never received a reply. It may have gone to your Trash or Spam folders, so please email me at andrewleavold@gmail.com, and if you're expecting a T-shirt, don't forget to send your shirt size.

2) We never received extra postage for pledgers outside Australia. I'm sorry this is an issue, but we massively underestimated postage charges would increase so much in just two years, and what we thought would be $10 to $25 postage is in fact $20 to $40. I'm sure you can appreciate that money would be coming out of my pocket, and a poor filmmaker just can't afford that. So please check your prize, and see if you have included the extra postage. PayPal is the easiest way to send the extra postage - just email me at andrewleavold@gmail.com and we can go from there.

PLEASE, SEND US PHOTOS OF YOUR WENG WENG BOBBLE HEADS FOR THE WEBSITE!

"WENG WENG FOREVER" NOW OPEN - THE ON-LINE STORE, THE FACEBOOK GROUP, THE FANTASTIC STUFF!

Now that most of the Kickstarter packages are finally on their way, it's time for myself and artist Mark Nichols to unveil "Weng Weng Forever", our Weng-related online store. Mark created the fantastic Weng Weng bobble head, which you can purchase here, as well as his life-sized Weng bust, based on his actual face cast. Plus there are signed The Search For Weng Weng DVDs and A4 poster art, T-shirts, bumper stickers, fridge magnets, and new and exclusive items to add over the years to come.

Naturally I'll be in Manila until November 9 for our next movie's premiere, but after that... Happy shopping! http://www.wengwengforever.com/#!weng-weng-merchandise/c1k7w

"HELLOOOOO QUEZON CITY!" OUR NEW FILM OPENS THE QUEZON CITY INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL NEXT WEEK

I just over a week, our new documentary feature film THE LAST PINOY ACTION KING, on Filipino action superstar Rudy Fernandez, opens the QCinema Quezon City International Film Festival at Gateway Mall, Thursday 22nd October. Both myself and co-director Daniel Palisa will be there to present it, along with much of the cast and crew. If you're in Manila, we'd LOVE to see you on the Red Carpet!

Considering THE SEARCH FOR WENG WENG took seven years to complete, the new film has had a remarkably quick turnaround - seven months from the initial Facebook message from Rudy's son Rap asking me, "Can you guys please do a film about my Dad?", to its world premiere in Manila.

The budget was even smaller that THE SEARCH… but Team Rudy (many of whom worked on The Search..., including co-creator Daniel Palisa and line producer Kristine Kintana, music maestro The Screaming Meanies etc) all pulled together as a team and maximized our on-screen bang for limited bucks, and I'm unbelievably proud of the results. THE LAST PINOY ACTION KING is slick, packed with gorgeous archival material, and with fifty interviews representing a Who's Who of the Filipino film industry, tells a vastly different story to our previous film, one from the other side of the tracks, concentrating exclusively on a virtually unknown world (outside the Philippines at least) of Tagalog-language cinema history and the Filipino action film. Thematically however it ties in beautifully with THE SEARCH…, and also our third documentary on Pinoy cinema, now in the funding stage. I can't say too much about that one yet, but let's just say it will be eye-opening (and it may require an Imelda Marcos bobble head…)!

I must also add - you guys are directly responsible for the new film. Without your Weng Weng pledges, there would be no The Search For Weng Weng, and without The Search…, there would be no Last Pinoy Action King. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you all for giving me a new life outside of retail, a life of constant adventure and discovery, a creative life. Mabuhay!

THE LAST PINOY ACTION KING: Loving husband and father. Action superstar. Heir to "Da King", Fernando Poe Jr. Idol to millions.

Rudy "Daboy" Fernandez, born into film royalty, married his movie queen and lived a extraordinary life in the public spotlight, before passing away just as publicly aged only 56.

Andrew Leavold and Daniel Palisa, co-creators of the internationally-acclaimed The Search for Weng Weng (2013), delve even deeper into the heart and soul of Filipino cinema, weaving a rich tapestry of film clips, family movies, rare photos and TV appearances, and interviews with family and those friends, co-stars and colleagues closest to "Daboy".

THE LAST PINOY ACTION KING is an intimate and often heartbreaking portrait, complete with personal triumphs and tragedies, of one of the Philippines' most beloved screen icons, and the life and death of the Filipino action hero itself.

Howdy all,

Crazy times indeed. I realize it's been a long two year wait for some of you, but we're almost there, having dispatched more than 80% of all Kickstarter pledges. If you still haven't received your package yet, it might be due to one of three reasons…

1) We're just waiting on a few things from the printers - T-shirt reprints for certain sizes, magnets and bumper stickers. Please be patient, your package IS in the works!

TRASH VIDEO REUNION: TWENTY YEARS SINCE OPENING DAY!

Brisbane folk, please mark it in your diaries: Wednesday 26th August is the Trash Video Reunion at the old shop - now a swanky bar named The End, 73 Vulture St in West End). We're marking twenty years (!!!) since I opened the store, fifteen since I moved to West End, and five years since the doors closed forever.

Expect Trashy cocktails, door prizes, the inevitable speeches, and demented fuzz courtesy of DJ The Screaming Meanies, plus endless VHS projected onto the back wall. We're at the former counter from 7pm...please drop by, grab a Weng Weng bobble head or two, and say "cheers"!

Oh, don't forget to share this around, and please if you're one of the old Trash crew, join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1452624428379347/

IF YOU'RE IN MELBOURNE, PART ONE: FITZROY FILM FAIR

"From B-grade to Arthouse, whatever your taste, you'll find something cool at Fitzroy's first ever FILM FAIR! Buy, sell and swap with fellow film lovers." So says the blurb for the inaugural Fitzroy Film Fair, brainchild of Melbourne cult filmmaker Stuart Simpson. I'll be there selling Search For Weng Weng merch, a suitcase full of VHS mega-rarities from the Trash Video vaults, cult DVDs, film books and mags, and some real film related oddities, inside my favourite Tiki bar in Australia. The fair kicks off midday on Saturday 5th September at The Luwow (62-70 Johnston St, Fitzroy) until 5pm. Needless to ay, if you're anywhere near Fitzroy that afternoon, please drop by and say howdy!

IF YOU'RE IN MELBOURNE, PART TWO: "SEARCH FOR WENG WENG" AT MUFF!

That's the Melbourne Underground Film Festival, or MUFF, 16th edition, at 7pm Sunday 13th September, at Backlot Studios (65 Haig Street, Southbank, South Melbourne),

Immediately after is the Melbourne premiere of Jarret Gahan's documentary GONE LESBO GONE (2015), a retrospective look from Lesbo's cameraman at me making my first feature, revisiting the cast and crew more than ten years later, followed by the film itself, LESBO-A-GO-GO (2003)………

From FILMINK: It’s a strange pitch. Director Jarret Gahan’s debut feature, Gone Lesbo Gone, is a retrospective documentary on filmmaker Andrew Leavold’s debut feature, Lesbo-A-Go-Go, a no-budget tribute to sixties exploitation films, which has garnered a minor cult following.

“I think there will always be an audience for Lesbo-A-Go-Go,” Gahan says about the sordid source of his documentary. “Honestly outside of the niche sixties films that it's paying homage to, there's no other picture out there quite like it, it's a real curio piece. I’m hoping this documentary might help shine a light on it once again.”

Gahan met Leavold in the mid-nineties as a customer and aspiring filmmaker at the latter’s iconic Trash Video store in Brisbane. Upon making Lesbo-A-Go-Go, Leavold invited Gahan to make a short retrospective piece as a special feature for the DVD release. When distribution for the film fell through, however, Gahan dug a little deeper into the production and realised there was a bigger story to be told. What emerged was a behind-the-scenes story that was every bit as crazy as the film itself. [read the rest of the article HERE: http://www.filmink.com.au/news/lsquogone-lesbo-gonersquo-revisits-trash-classic/ …Trailer is HERE: https://vimeo.com/98970495]

FOLLOWED BY A SPECIAL Q&A WITH THE CAST AND CREW, THEN THE FILM THAT STARTED IT ALL…

LESBO-A-GO-GO (2003) Andrew Leavold's no-budget film tribute to Sixties adult filmmaker Doris Wishman, Lesbo-A-Go-Go is the tawdry story of a young innocent girl's unwitting descent into drug addiction, delirium, depravity and damnation. After she is ravaged on the grave of her murdered wrestler boyfriend, beautiful but naive Sugar (Cari Withercy) is taken in by the predatory Kitten (Eileen Surepuss) and soon descends into a sin-soaked underworld of lesbianism, madness and psychedelic violence. Filmed in Brisbane in seedy b&w (except for a saturated colour hallucination sequence) over six months for $700, Lesbo-A-Go-Go is a feverish homage to vintage exploitation cinema (or “porn without porn”), featuring a gloriously fake 60s soundtrack and special appearances from Geoff Corbett (Sixfthick), Evil Dick and Tamara from HITS, Melbourne filmmaker and MUFF director Richard Wolstencroft as “Dr Geese”, and St Kilda's own Fred Negro as the “Vision From Hell”.

"THE SEARCH FOR WENG WENG" UPDATE #20: THE BOBBLE HEADS HAVE ARRIVED!

Howdy everyone,

Well, it's been a long journey for our little Bobble-headed friends from the artist's table to a factory in China, then all the way to Brisbane Port where they're waiting to clear Customs, but I'm happy to say THE EAGLES HAVE LANDED.

Once again, I'm so sorry about the delay in getting the last of the packages out - this final phase of Kickstarter merchandise has been plagued with problems for over a year, and further complicated by numerous Lost In Translation moments with our manufacturer. Apologies also for the long period of silence, but I was on a secret mission to Manila working on the next documentary and couldn't update from my Philippines laptop.

I've contacted everyone by email at the start of the year asking for updated addresses, T-shirt sizes etc, but quite a few of you are yet to reply. If for some reason you never received the email or just plain forgot, please email me your details as soon as you can at andrewleavold@gmail.com …I look forward to hearing what you think of your goodies!

Meanwhile, the last of the packages will begin to wing their way around the world over the next few weeks. Feel free to drop me a line to tell me it arrived safely? Thanks once again for your patience…I'm happy to say we finally got there (almost!).

LAST PINOY ACTION KING crew with action superstar and Rudy's cousin, Robin Padilla (orange shirt)

DID YOU SAY "NEXT DOCUMENTARY"?

Absolutely. THE LAST PINOY ACTION KING. It's the story of Filipino action star Rudy Fernandez, heir apparent to the late great Fernando Poe Jr, whose own career was tragically cut short. To mark his seventh year passing, the Fernandez family have commissioned Dani and I to make a film about him; via Rudy's story and the icons we've interviewed, we also delve even deeper into the incredible and never-before explored strata of Philippine cinema history. Now deeeeep in the editing process, I can confidently say the intimate telling of Rudy's story, with its connections to political dynasties and entertainment royalty, its dizzying highs and tragic lows, will mark another fascinating chapter in the Big Book of Filipino Action Heroes! Due for a Manila premiere in October, and overseas festivals soon after, naturally we'll keep you in the loop right here.

WENG WENG FOREVER: THE GROUP, THE STORE, THE FANTASTIC STUFF!

"THE SEARCH FOR WENG WENG" UPDATE #19: KICKSTARTER PACKAGES ARE GO (SLOWLY)! WENG WENG IN ROTTERDAM - TONIGHT! …AND WENG WENG'S BROTHER R.I.P.

Happy 2015 everyone!

First of all, BIG apologies to everyone who haven't received your Kickstarter packages. The good news is, about a third of all 333 incentives have been delivered so far. That still leaves over two hundred of you without your goodies.

The major delays have been two-fold.

Firstly, the DVDs were finally released by Melbourne's Monster Pictures on December 17 - right in the midst of our North American trip, and right before Christmas! As a result, it's been a nightmare trying to get stock up to the Sunshine Coast. However, the discs should arrive some time next week, and those DVDs should be in your hands very soon after.

The biggest nightmare has been the Bobble Heads. I can't go into specifics, but all attempts to get a finished sculpture to the manufacturers in China have been frustrated at every turn. As of this week those issues are a thing of the past, and the Bobbles HOPEFULLY will arrive, ready to post to you (along with your "Everything But The Jetpack" and bulk deal packages), in the next month or so.

I sincerely apologize for not getting those incentives out to you earlier as promised.

As a small way of saying sorry: if you're still waiting on your package, and are hanging to see the film, just email me - andrewleavold@gmail.com - and I'll happily send you the top secret link to the complete movie on Vimeo.

In the meanwhile, I'll be emailing each of you, asking for addresses and shirt sizes, if you haven't sent me your details. Talk soon!!

OUR FESTIVAL RUN ENDS WITH A BANG: "HELLOOOOO ROTTERDAM!"

Yes, it's official: The Search… plays International Film Festival Rotterdam, one of THE biggest film fests on the planet, tonight (Thursday 22nd Jan) and twice next week (https://www.iffr.com/en/films/the-search-for-weng-weng/). To have those "Official Selection" laurels, words can't describe how proud we are at Weng HQ. There's also one final big screen appearance in San Francisco - SF Indie Fest once again at the fabulous Roxie in the Mission, Feb 8th (http://www.roxie.com/ai1ec_event/sf-indie-fest-search-weng-weng/)

Outside The Royal, Montreal (L-R): Me and the Chuds' John R and Kagan McLeod

NORTH AMERICA WAS A ROARING SUCCESS! Not to mention a completely manic exercise in city-hopping, with a different city practically every day. Ontario was a revelation, having never been to Canada before, as were the smaller US places like Phoenix, Philadelphia and Detroit (downtown Detroit, screening in a former high school - now THAT was a fantastic experience!). There were too many highlights to mention, but hanging in Toronto with Weng Weng Rap's The Chuds was a huge thrill; making my usual pilgrimage to mystical Sedona to stay with the equally magical Russ Meyer starlet Raven de la Croix (Up!); and finally visiting Weng Weng co-star Nelson Anderson (Calibre 357) in his Hollywood home…and plotting the next film with him! Keep watching this space, muchachos…

A BIG THANK YOU goes out to our North American hosts - Horrible Imaginings Film Fest's Miguel Rodriguez for bankrolling the LAX leg and being the absolute host with the most; Andrea Beesley and the awesome FilmBar in Phoenix; Mauro Tumbocan's FACINE Fil-Am film festival in San Francisco, and the lovely Rachel from Flipper for showing me Berkeley's seedy back streets; Neil and Jason in Chicago, all at Simon's, and the 4am donut shop shift; Brooklyn's Nitehawk Cinema and particularly John Woods; Marc Walkow and family, the Sleaze Fest crew for letting me crash their movie afternoon, and the East Village karaoke mob; Cristina from Alamo Drafthouse in Yonkers, and the staff for letting me sleep through Hunger Games, I really needed it!...Eric Bresler's fantastic PhilaMOCA screening space in Philadelphia (cue theme from Rocky); Paula and Tim at the incredible Cinema Detroit, can't wait for the next round of sliders; all of the guys at Toronto's Eyesore Cinema, a real home away from home, and of course Colin Geddes and The Royal, and the secret cocktail club; Kevin and Christina Preece, great to see you guys after so many years, our poutine companion Clammy, and all at The Mayfair; Hadrian at Los Angeles' Cinefamily, still one of my favourite cinemas in the world; and lastly but not leastly, my dearest friend Marion C for mad LA freeway dashes and soy chorizo. A big thank you also to the many Kickstarter folk who came to the screenings, it was great to put faces to names, and see you on the next Tour of Duty!

Me showing Celing the tattoo of his brother! (2011)
Me showing Celing the tattoo of his brother! (2011)

ON A SAD NOTE: It was the afternoon of the San Francisco FACINE screening that I received the terrible news: Weng Weng's only surviving brother Celing dela Cruz had passed away. A series of strokes following a long illness had finally taken their toll, and he was laid to rest on 11th December. His is without a doubt the most touching and heartbreaking voice in The Search For Weng Weng, and without the help of Celing and his lovely wife Editha, we would never have the intimate story we were able to piece together, and thus there would simply be no movie. I'm so pleased Celing was able to watch the finished film at the Manila premiere and see the story he had kept to himself for so long was finally told to the world. I'm also proud to have known him: a true gentleman, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. You will be greatly missed.

On behalf of Team Weng I would like to express how truly grateful we are, and thank everyone around the world for joining us on what's been a truly wild rollercoaster ride!

NEW REVIEWS: Now the DVD is out, we're reading a fresh wave of reviews: from Starburst Magazine's astounding ten out of ten ("…not merely a jokey look at a gimmicky intercontinental star but is a glaring assessment of prejudices, fame and exploitation" - http://www.starburstmagazine.com/reviews/dvd-and-blu-ray-home-entertainment-reviews/10695-dvd-review-the-search-for-weng-weng) to an abysmal two out of five in the Aussie edition of Empire ("amateurish"). On the whole, though, the remarks have been generally positive to glowing.

On the Brutal As Hell website: "… unmissable for those with a taste for the bizarre" (http://www.brutalashell.com/2015/01/dvd-review-the-search-for-weng-weng-2014/)

From the article "Five weird and wonderful films to see at BAPFF" in The Brisbane Times: "… destined to become an Australian underground classic… This labour of love is a fascinating portrait of the Filipino film industry and an extraordinary account of an inexplicable cinematic phenomenon." (http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/queensland/five-weird-and-wonderful-films-to-see-at-bapff-20141203-11z3h6.html)

John Harrison's review on the Monster Kid Classic Horror Forum: "Almost as much a story about the filmmaker’s personal obsession with the subject as it is a biography of Weng Weng… Highly recommended viewing for anyone interested in the history of exploitation and low-budget cinema, especially that particularly strange and eclectic brand known as Mondo Macabro…" (http://monsterkidclassichorrorforum.yuku.com/topic/57684)

On his Ninja Dixon blog, Fred Anderson nails precisely what we were trying to achieve: "The Search for Weng Weng is not only a quite sad story about a very special guy (I won’t say anything, it’s up to you to see!), it’s a film about the Philippines and the soul of the Pinoy." Thanks Fred! (http://fredanderson.typepad.com/my-blog/2015/01/the-search-for-weng-weng-andrew-leavold-2013.html)

The full list of on-line reviews are on the IMDB here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1073143/externalreviews We're currently sitting at 7.6 out of 10. If you've seen the film, please rate or review us?

Monster Pictures' Neil Foley hands me the "Monster Spirit" Award, Monster Fest, November 2014

Just a comparatively quick one this time to say Brisbane, the US and Canada - it's your turn, as the Search For Weng Weng Juggernaut rolls onwards! A thousand thanks to everyone at Melbourne's Monster Fest for making my last seven days one of the most memorable this year AND our humble little doco won the "Monster Spirit" Award at Sunday's closing ceremonies. Once again, thank you for all of your support, and hope to see you on our final push for 2014!

BRISBANE PREMIERE TOMORROW!

Our home town of Brisbane Australia gets its great unveiling tomorrow night - at the revamped Brisbane International Film Festival! Now Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival (BAPFF), we have been granted two screenings at the Palace Barracks cinema on Thursday December 4th, and Saturday December 13th. I'll be introducing the December 4 screening at 8.30pm and doing a Q&A, then leading the charge straight afterwards to karaoke across the road from the Barracks at Casablancas - being one of the Philippines' national sports, remember! - and bon voyage drinks before flying to the US on Friday morning.

Our film as screened in some incredible places - US, Canada, all over Europe, and even in Weng Weng's own neighbourhood - but there's still nothing like a home crowd. I hope you fellow Briswegians, friends, relatives, colleagues, former Trash Video customers, can make it for a party I'm certain I won't forget in a hurry.

Tickets are available HERE: http://brisbaneasiapacificfilmfestival.com/film-archive/the-search-for-weng-weng/ - BRISBANE FOLK, PLEASE SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!

KICKSTARTER PLEDGES WITH TICKETS: Sadly the tickets BAPFF allotted to us for the December 4 screening are all gone, but we still have some available for December 13. Please be quick! email me - andrewleavold@gmail.com - and I can sort you out
