'I started wearing neckties more, cause I feel like a superstar!', Heartside artist Willie Jones on his recent induction to The Museum of Everything in London.

Guess what happened!?:

In May 2011, two artists from Heartside Gallery and Studio, Willie Jones and Mark Wilson, were invited to be a part of Exhibit #4 at The Museum of Everything in LONDON, running Sept 2- Oct 18th, 2011!  Over 200,000 people are expected to view the exhibit, which will feature over 50 new and emerging contemporary artists from studios in Belgium, America, Poland, Brazil and Japan!  Willie started making art in 1998 at the prompting of his case worker. He says he found his favorite hobby when he first came to the studio and started drawing his cars, houses and bongo drums. Mark was a much-loved, long-time studio artist who passed away in 2008. His carefully mapped-out universes of angels, gods, UFOs and atomic bombs adorn the studio walls at Heartside, and represent the highly-focused drawings of a true artist's artist.  These gentlemen now have a combined total of 35 pieces that will remain in the museum's permanent collection.  Alright now!

About the studio:

The studio is located in the Heartside neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Michigan (a stones throw from downtown). Each week, upwards of 80 people walk into the drop-in studio to create works, share stories, make ceramic pots, finish a weaving, and express themselves creatively. Stepping in the doors, you can feel the honesty, sincerity and raw talent of the artists, most of whom have had no formal training. Many artists are folks who reside in the neighborhood, some homeless, some with varying degrees of mental health issues, but all with a desire to express themselves and share stories with their community. Since 1993, we have worked tirelessly to provide a safe and supportive environment for Heartside neighbors to create, exhibit and sell their original, story-filled works.  We are incredibly proud of Willie and Mark for all of their hard and creative work, and of the chance to represent Heartside and Grand Rapids overseas.

Hello London:

Three folks from Heartside will be attending Exhibit #4 to see our works in the context of an international museum. Willie will also be drawing his hot rods live for the folks in London-- at the Museum and on the streets of central London! Sue Wilson, Mark's sister and closest friend, will represent him in London to see how his years of diligent and focused work have finally been recognized. As Arts Coordinator of Heartside Gallery and Studio, I will accompany Willie and Sue, to represent our studio and continue to make connections for Heartside and Grand Rapids. But we need your help getting there!

How much:

We need $5000 for travel and accommodations for 6 days in London (Oct 10-16th), and we know the supporters of Heartside, and of outsider art, will support this important endeavor. But please don't stop there- we'd love to reach $6500 to be sure ALL accommodations are covered while we are in London. And please pass this link on to your people!

Thank you so much for reading and watching the video! Please be sure to check out the pledge amounts on the right side, which will earn you a rad little piece of Heartside and help us get to the most important event that the studio has ever seen!
