About this project

What do we want to do?

What we really want to do through this expedition is to send out a, “Rude Awakening.”    As the Global Community continues to advance in modern technology individuals lives are becoming increasingly more sedentary and confined within these urban jungles.  As a result individuals are forgetting about these natural places and spaces that are struggling to co-exist with this ever increasingly developed world. What we strive to do is to inspire individuals to make that transition from sedentary lifestyle to a more healthy active one through reconnecting with the outdoors. It is Rude in the manner regarding the rugged approach in which we choose to conduct our journey.

How will we achieve this goal?

Beginning on March 24, 2012 during a period of 8 days, I will be running 184 miles across the longest length of Death Valley National Park from its Northern most tip to the southern most tip.  This expedition will be made possible with the help of my support team who will be following me in two Jeeps in order to ensure I complete this expedition safely and smoothly.

This expedition will be documented through film and photography.  A short documentary will be filmed as well as many photographs taken of this amazing experience to come.

How did the idea for this expedition come about?

During a recent trip to Death Valley in early November 2011 with my good friend Billyjack Jory, we rented a Jeep to grant us access into some of the “less accessible” locations of the park in order to get away from the more touristy areas and really experience the park for what it was. While heading to Palm Springs located in the Saline Valley we ran into a group of individuals who’d been stranded in the middle of the valley for 24 hrs due to a flat tire. While we stopped to help with what we could, we met an inspiring couple who had just started a journey from San Fransisco down the Pan-Am Highway to the southern most tip of South America.  Although at this point in my life I have commitments that would hold me back from something as large as that, I have always wanted to do something to that scale. Baby steps right? These two individuals truly inspired me and gave me the extra push I needed to get up and start doing things of my own! With my passion of the outdoors, my education in a field which is significant to the task, and my enthusiasm in fitness, I decided what the hell? Although I don’t yet have the time to travel across two continents in a truck, I do have some time to run across one of the largest national parks in the United States while getting the chance to experience all of the amazing features within it as well as having an opportunity to change people's lives by incorporating the outdoors with active healthy living! This will be the starting point of many great things to come. It is experiences such as these that begin with crazy ideas, which give you a greater appreciation of life, the world and the people who live in it!!!

How will the funds be used?

All funds will be used for expedition related purposes!  Majority of the funds will be spent on the two Jeep which we plan on renting.  This is the only rental company located within the park, and as pricey as they can be, (especially for the length of time which we will have them) they are completely necessary.  These vehicles are customized for the rugged terrain of Death Valley and will be able to grant us access into the less accessible areas of the park.
Aside from that, the remainder of the funds will be used on other necessary equipment in order to ensure the trip is safe.  First Aid equipment, Communication Radios, GPS Devices just to name a few.

Who are the expedition members involved?

When I decided that I wanted to run across the longest length of Death Valley, I knew that this would not be something I’d be able to do solo. A team would need to be assembled in order to ensure the expedition be carried out in a smooth and safe manner. Trust, motivation, and professionalism were the qualifications for a job that lacked any pay and would require work around the clock. It didn’t take long to come up with the right group of guys that seemed only fitting for this type of job. Three of the four crew members I served with in Iraq from 2008-2009. With that being said, they have already more than proved themselves worthy of the job. They are as follows:

Billyjack Jory- Driver and Navigator
Mauricio Ruiz- Expedition Manager
Chris Andrus- Driver and First Aid

Arguably, the most important piece of the puzzle would be Mike Lambuth who would be responsible for getting all of this on Video. Although I haven’t known Mike for nearly as long as the others his experience, attitude and enthusiasm about the idea of this project landed him the job! Mike has 5 years of video production experience. He recently has started his own production company called O Negative Films consisting of professionals that have worked on everything from music videos and commercials to major motion pictures.
