Meet Juvie Hall, attorney, karaoke lover, and team co-captain of the Guns N Rollers in Portland’s Rose City Rollers roller derby league:
Honestly, I’m no one in particular. I’m not a derby superstar. I’m not a derby villain. I’m not a derby founder or pioneer or teacher. I’m just a derby player in awe of the magical transformative power of this sport and its community.
Since beginning her derby journey in 2009, Juvie has experienced a major life transformation, from married practicing attorney to divorced freelance editor and roller derby team captain who lives derby practically 24-7. Her transformation continues as she negotiates her new reality.

Many women who play roller derby in the U.S. have found it to be a transformative experience. So how does roller derby work its magic? Does something about the sport itself cause dramatic life changes, or does roller derby simply attract women who are ready for transformation? And does the transformational power of roller derby cross economic, social, and cultural boundaries? Seeking to answer these questions, Juvie is setting off across the globe to discover the source of derby's power to help women completely transform their lives.
Juvie will visit derby leagues all over the globe in search of characters and kindred spirits who can help her distill the essence of roller derby—that certain something that potentially crosses geographic, cultural, and economic boundaries. Getting to know players both on and off the track, she will seek to understand what derby means to each woman she meets and to learn how her international derby sisters are using their derby experiences to improve their lives and communities.
WHICH COUNTRIES ARE WE VISITING AND WHY?
Flat Track Around the World will follow Juvie Hall as she travels to and skates with leagues in Mexico, Peru, Brazil, France, Norway, Malaysia, Australia, Russia, and Israel. With leagues in approximately 40 countries and a growing international sisterhood, the increasing popularity of roller derby indicates a strong will among the women who play it to live by their own rules.
Since exploring how society and culture might affect a woman’s derby experience is a central theme of this project, these countries were chosen as representative examples of the global presence and impact of roller derby. The itinerary includes wealthy countries, poor countries, countries with highly populated urban areas, countries with mostly rural areas, countries with numerous and well-established roller derby leagues, and countries where roller derby is new and/or isolated.
We plan to visit Mexico first so we can refine our work together in an international setting before we set off on the much longer journey to visit the rest of the countries on our itinerary. This Kickstarter project is specifically to raise funds for our trip to Mexico.
WHY THIS FILM MATTERS
The documentary seeks to answer the question: Is involvement with roller derby likely to change a woman’s life for the better, regardless of geographic location, wealth, or cultural differences? In order to answer this question, the project will explore a few central themes. First, the documentary will examine how the experience of joining and playing roller derby changes a woman’s life in general—i.e., how it changes her self-perception, confidence, physical health, career, and her relationships with her family, friends, and community. Second, the documentary will explore whether—and how—the life changes associated with involvement in roller derby are affected by cultural and socio-economic differences across international borders. Third, the project will explore how women in the international derby sisterhood are harnessing the power of their personal transformations and using it for the good of all.
Ultimately, we want to understand how women who can transform their own lives can change the world.
BUT HASN'T DERBY BEEN DOCUMENTED ALREADY?
Roller derby has been documented fairly extensively and very well for a niche sport. Brutal Beauty: Tales of the Rose City Rollers and Blood on the Flat Track, among other fine films, have both captured derby as a sport and a spectacle, as well as stories of the unique individuals that play derby and why they play.
We aim to tell a story that is quite a bit different. We want to understand the culture of roller derby, find the "soul" of it, so to speak, that is common to all leagues in all the countries we visit. Is there a similar dynamic energy shared throughout derby culture internationally? What does it mean to women, to people, and to the world if this is so? Why are derby leagues being created all over the world, in a wide variety of cultures and socio-economic environments? Our thesis is that this soul or energy attracts women for different reasons and changes them in potentially deep ways.

We hope our supporters include people for whom any part of our documentary concept resonates: derby players and fans; personal friends and family; and those of you who are keen to support crazy dreamers who are nevertheless grounded enough to complete this epic quest.
Your monetary contributions for this project will help us travel to and stay in Mexico for a few weeks, purchase production insurance to cover ourselves and our own professional equipment while gone (and cover the production itself in case something happens), and optimize our equipment for traveling. Even a donation of $1 means a lot to us, both as a gesture of support and a dollar that we can put toward our expenses.

Juvie Hall is co-producing her first film with filmmakers Cynthia Lopez and Alison Grayson. Each of us is passionate about this project and its messages of empowerment, journeying, transformation, and the magic of roller derby.
Juvie Hall, producer, writer, co-director. Juvie Hall (aka Diana Fedoroff) is a born performer with a penchant for academia. She’s a total goofball, sings some mean karaoke, and has even been known to win a national oral argument competition or two. She has a B.S. in interior design, with a minor in German language, a B.A. in environmental studies, and a J.D. in environmental law. Juvie spent several years as a civil trial attorney in Portland, Oregon, spinning her wheels in personal injury and construction defect law. When she discovered roller derby, Juvie’s wheels really started spinning. She is currently a freelance writer and editor, full time team captain, and budding documentary producer.
Cynthia Lopez, co-producer, writer, director, editor. Cynthia Lopez has a background that is both artistic and academic. She made her first film at age eleven, the print of which was tragically lost. Cynthia has written, produced, directed, shot and edited a variety of documentary and short narrative fiction projects through her production company, Golden Moon Media. She recently produced, directed, and edited a prize-winning international collaborative documentary, "Global Health and Aging: Service Learning in Nicaragua", for the Jesse F. Richardson Foundation. When Cynthia isn’t making films or daydreaming, she can be found walking in the forest with her Catahoula, making collages, or taking a leisurely bike ride around town.
Alison Grayson, audio and video maven. Alison Grayson fell in love with video in high school and went on to get her B.S. in Video and Film Production. She recently founded Lingering Illocutions LLC, a production company devoted to creating honest films for passionate people. Her first feature, The Love of Beer, celebrates women in the NW craft beer industry and is currently being screened throughout the country. On the rare occasion Alison isn’t holding a boom or a camera, she spends her time drinking too much coffee, getting lost, and kicking ass in Krav Maga or Muay Thai.
